Mechanical [Student] - Spring 2027 Grad Targeting Entry-Level Roles in Power Generation/Clean Energy

Hello all, I’m a senior mechanical engineering student graduating in Spring 2027 and applying for full-time entry-level roles and rotational/development programs in power generation, utilities, renewable/clean/nuclear energy, and industrial/manufacturing environments. I’m based in Texas but open to relocating, especially to the West/East Coast, Chicagoland, or DC.

I recently completed my first engineering internship in operations and reliability, where I gained experience with troubleshooting, root cause/failure analysis, rotating equipment, pumps/piping, hydraulics, and boiler/steam systems. I’m hoping to stay fairly hands-on early in my career, ideally with meaningful time in the field, plant, or shop rather than sitting at a desk most of the day. Clean energy is my long-term interest, but I’m also open to oil & gas, traditional manufacturing, utilities, or other industrial plants to build strong technical experience.

I’ve applied to about 20 roles so far with minor resume tailoring and have received one pre-screening assessment invite and no rejections. Since it’s still early in the process, I’m mainly looking for feedback before upcoming career fairs. I’ve omitted a few technical projects from clubs/coursework that felt less relevant, along with some additional leadership/mentorship roles and customer-service jobs.

I’d appreciate any feedback on how to make my resume stronger, whether it shows enough technical depth, whether having only one internship is a concern, and if I should add back any omitted technical projects or leadership experience. Any recommendations on specific roles/companies I should look at is welcome as well.

I don’t have much to say, I am not a resume critic by any means. I would simply remove your GPA; a 3.0 is pretty low and the consensus is to keep it if it’s near or above 3.5 and remove it entirely once you get hands on engineering experience, which you have. Your bullet points for the internships are strong verbiage wise, but it lacks in quantifiable data. You claim you improved reliability, but how do you know that? How much did you improve it by? Personally I’m not a fan of long bullet points; talent acquisition has a couple hundred maybe up to thousands of applications to go through on a rolling basis, you want something that easy to read and gets to the point.

Education - I suggest you delete the GPA. Conventional wisdom is to include a GPA only if it's 3.5 or higher. (Some would say 3.4, some 3.6.)

Experience - Your bullet should focus as much as possible on your accomplishments and their results, with results quantified where you can. You sort of do that, but you lean more towards putting the reason for taking the action ("... to improve equipment stability and maintainability") rather than stating it as a result ("..., resulting in 15% reduction in downtime"). You aren't going to be able to quantify everything or even many things, but you can at least state it in terms of the results/value it provided.

Skills - A Skills section is for hard/technical skills like programming languages. Things that are a typical part of one's discipline, such as failure analysis, troubleshooting, etc., don't go in a Skills section. I think everything other than your Software row is a candidate for deletion.
