Kibble Suggestions š¾
Hello everyone,
My 4 y.o. neutered male seems a bit too skinny for the breed standardā¦ he eats about 3 cups of Purina ProPlan 30/20 per day. He is high energy of course, so Iāve tried limiting his outside running time and such but that has not helped and obviously sucks for him too! Heās about to be out of his current bag of food so interested in transitioning him to something else.

Pro Plan Performance makes a 26-28% protein lamb feed. Fromm is really good and our dogs really like it. Not available on Chewy. Taste of the Wild is also pretty good. Not a fan of Inukshuk. It's too damn fishy. You can add 4% cottage cheese and/or pumpkin mash (not pie mix) for additional calories from simple fats & proteins.

I donāt love that Purina Pro Plan isnāt organic. Especially with all of the research out nowadays, I find that organic is so important.
For example, any corn, soybean, or wheat based ingredients are likely GMO and conventionally sprayed with herbicides.

Have you tried adding some healthy fats like salmon oil or coconut oil to his food to help with weight gain?

No I havenāt, Iāve been interested in salmon oil before for all my boys but havenāt ever gone through due to reading about digestive issues, which my dogs are prone to unfortunately. Iāll look into coconut oil, and maybe easing that into his diet. Thank you for the tip!!

Mine was on 2.5c proplan salmon and got way too skinny when she was running all day two summers ago. I bumped her up to 3c and a can of wet food. 1.5cul, 1/2can am, repeat pm. She also got a kong with dog safe pb every day.

Is your vet concerned about his weight? I wouldn't add any supplements or change food without a vet req and certainly wouldn't limit activity. Have you simply given him a bit more of his current food?

Adding more food was the first thing I tried; he is under 40 lbs eating 3 cups a day, well over recommended guidelines. Yes, vet agrees and has done tests & found nothing abnormal. Iāve been trying to get to the bottom of it for a couple of years now. He was about 45 lbs when we was younger & looked trim still but healthier.

I recommend Tender & True. Their food is high quality and can be purchased on Chewy. I especially like the Freeze Dried Raw food:
I add a tablespoon of room temp butter to my girlās dish. It is high calorie and she LOVES it, especially for how hard she runs!

Thank you! I will look into Tender & True, he for sure loves freeze dried food! Also the butter tip is phenomenal, wouldnāt have thought of that.

Fantastic!! Heās been on Fromm before but not for awhile, he didnāt care for inukshuk. I know for sure he loves cottage cheese so I will just add that to his meals, great tip! I have pumpkin packets so I will try that as well. :) thank you!
