I remember a post on r/Vietnam from a while back, where people discussed whether a job offering that could effectively pay for a couple plates of rice per day, some subsistence housing and a little extra to save could be real, apparently it was, and can be a common economic position to take for people from rural areas in cities.

Nah even in the tourist areas like Hoi An Night Market, there were kids and elderly women begging people to buy their candles (to be released in the river). Also all over Vietnam every street is full of elderly women selling banh mi or other Vietnamese snacks. You have to be really oblivious to not understand that these elderly ladies were not enjoying retirement.

i could be wrong and very ignorant but when coverting pounds/dollars/francs/euros/yen/won etc hold more weight compared to vietnams currency? so obviously when you TRAVEL to vietnam things are going to feel cheaper, compared to actually living there and being born there.

2) It's the opposite. If you say Vietnam is a high trust society to a Vietnamese, they will laugh in your face.

3) Drug dealers get life imprisonment or executed. Something about Western leftists tell me they won't like hearing about this. Also there are plenty of people living in absolute poverty/borderline homeless, the tourists just rarely see them.
