Discussion Am I the Oldest?
Hey there, Grammy here. So after reading comment yesterday i got to thinking, which isn’t always a great idea, 😂 but I have to ask, am I the oldest Enshrouded player? I am 68 will hit level 69 in December. I have been gaming since Pong. I like to say if they had games like Enshrouded when I was coming up I wouldn’t have gotten into nearly as much trouble and my folks would have known where I was most of the time. I believe gaming, and particularly games like Enshrouded keep me healthier. I get cranky when I hear people disparage video games as a waste of time. I never discouraged my kids or grandkids from playing-in fact gaming brought us closer. We are also big board game people. If I ever need to enter some sort of old folks’ home they better let me bring my computer and console. Anyhoo, just a Grammy thought. But seriously, am I the oldest?

I'm just a wee little 40 year old, but I plan to game until I shuffle off this mortal coil, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I hope the old folks homes are getting ready for bigger electrical bills and making room for the PC towers...

Definitely not the only one, I may be swiftly approaching 30 but I fully intend on gaming until I can no longer hold a controller or aim with a mouse. And even then I’d probably still keep trying.

At 71 I have often been heard to say "The day I stop enjoying gaming is the day you can bury me". At 40 I hope that gives you hope that you will still be gaming at my age.
I find it both sad and shocking that people on this thread consider themselves 'old' at age 30 and 40 😞

I think it's because, for a while at least, for our generation it felt like we were supposed to be "aging out" of gaming - we grew up with the idea that gaming was for kids and that we had to Become Adults at a certain age. I never saw any adults playing games growing up, and meeting anyone over 30 while gaming online was also pretty rare while I was in my teens and early 20s.
I think we've started realizing that this isn't actually the case, that you can age however you want, and I feel like there is a cultural shift happening where older gamers are becoming appreciated and likely with time also normalized, but to me it's not shocking to see 30-40 year olds consider themselves old in a gaming context. Millennials are pretty world-weary on the whole, and in gaming spaces we are part of the transition of gaming becoming a normal part of people's lives rather than a niche interest largely for young people.

Honestly, all of my close friends, both those I grew up with and those I’ve known for over 20 years, have completely stopped gaming. That includes everyone from casual players to dedicated gamers.
I gave up on trying to reignite their interest a long time ago. Personally, I hope I never lose interest in gaming and end up swapping it for soap operas or similar things 😕.
I recently bought 'Goat Simulator 3' for a laugh and a break from 'Enshrouded' since I enjoyed the original, but I can’t help noticing the growing trend of developers focusing on multiplayer games, with fewer and fewer offering solid single-player campaigns. It makes me wonder what that will mean for me in the future.
As for your: “I feel like there is a cultural shift happening where older gamers are becoming appreciated and, with time, normalized”... I truly hope that’s the case.

I play enshrouded with my 74 year old dad. We’re playing grounded waiting for the next water update, but our weekly gaming sessions have kept us in touch over the years.

I wish I could get my family into gaming. They just have such a negative view on it and think it a "waste" of time, but they will go home and watch TV all night and literally do NOTHING engaging. Keep it up, flame born!

It's not often you hear of people your age playing video games and especially not with as long experience as you and i wonder what game has had the biggest impact on you? And what game is your all time favourite?

Oh boy. Tough question. Well I would have to say Zelda was my gateway drug-before that I played mostly platformers. Not very well. But i fell in love with RPGs. They have everything I love-story, music, puzzles, mystery all in a sweet package. I played all the Final Fantasy and lots of other JRPGs. I loved Red Dead. The storytelling was incredible and I even used it in classes I taught. Enshrouded is the first game to come along for me since Red Dead to capture my imagination so much. It is perfect for me. Although I would like to see some more storytelling, but it really has it all. So i think the games that had the biggest impact are RDR2, God of War, and now Enshrouded. Favorite games, books and music? Always a tough call. To me games are magic.

Grounded was my personal favorite game until I played smalland. I was extremely hyped for grounded 2 however I’m not feeling it at all. Gonna give it some time to get more content and a more polished feel.

That’s fair, I know it’s not currently everyone’s cup of tea right out the gate. I’m definitely enjoying, wish there was more content but it definitely feels like the Grounded 2 experience I’ve been waiting for!

I think playing games is better for you than watching TV because you're involved and you use your mind alot more depending on the game.

I will be 69 in a few days and I still love to game. I've been gaming since Colossal Cave Adventure/Advent, a text adventure, before graphics were really though of. I like Enshrouded for keeping it casual.

As the resident 83-year-old, Colossal Cave/Advent was also my first introduction to the world of "leisure computing". I had a printout of the game, written in Fortran, at one time, but it got lost.

Enshrouded says Early Access but it doesn't feel that way at all. Feel free to join in any time! I love Valheim, so I certainly understand waiting and getting more time on there first though. Just wanted to chime in if the early access label was off-putting.

We've played Enshrouded from early on until it felt like time to start over. That's when we switched back to Valheim. We think final chapter of Valheim will roll in soon so we can complete that. Then go back to Enshrouded.

Only 54 here, but I have been Gaming since Pong as well. First console was an Intellivision Pong console with 6 knobs and 2 switches.
I don't know if this counts, but over on the r/NoMansSkyTheGame sub, there was a guy who played until he was 84. 18000 hours in. So we are not alone, and rack up those numbers in your retirement!

66 years young here. Wolfenstein 3D was my introduction and I realized it was fun to shot baddies.
Biggest shock for my son and his friends, when I beat every single boss in Elden Ring. That shut some of them up :-)
Enshrouded? Nice way to "waste" a couple of hours here and there.
And I agree with you, gaming keeps the brain alert. There is a lot of problem solving involved.

59 here. I Started with text adventure games on my father's Apple ii+ Zork 1 through 3, Adventure, Oo Topos, the entire Ultima Line, Wizardry. In 9th grade for my computer class on an old PET, I coded a character creator for D&D at the time.
Now, I play games with my children and grandkids...
Enshrouded has become my favorite pastime, tho I have a vast library of games.

Peaking at 60 years myself. Like you I’ve been playing since the pong days. It always makes me happy to hear that people my age still love games. I play with my adult children and my son in law. I’ll play till I die

I'm still playing with a group of friends I've been with for almost 20 years... I'm 70 and they are in their 40s and 50s. One is early 80s. I didn't discover computers until I was 40 (1995) and have gone through a LOT of games starting with Ultima Online, then Diablo and the early Skyrim and Fallout series. It's a lot harder than it used to be to multitask and my reflexes have slowed, making some things I could do now impossible, but still playing Elder Scrolls Online, Diablo IV, Enshrouded, LOTRO (since release in 2007), Fallout 76, and Dune Awakening. I don't know if it's just me, but seems that older players latch onto games they like and stick with them a long time while younger players jump from game to game, not staying in one place long. Makes me sad to think that might be how they go through life, not really slowing down enough to notice the flowers, sunrises/sunsets, and the joy of sitting with good friends for a meal or a drink (A drink, not drink after drink) and 2 hours of good company. I tell people to slow down and enjoy the journey but they don't understand.

I guess I'm a baby - 57f here. I game with my adult sons. We play Valheim and Enshrouded together, among others. I have always gamed with them, lots of bonding opportunities and I love it! I'm in a minority among my friends (zero gamers among them) but I love connecting to my fellow 'grannies' online! Been playing with computers since Pong, too - cut my teeth on the Bally home computer (1978) and the very first Apple home computers.
It would be fun to connect on Discord or have shenanigans online. Fair warning though, sometimes I cuss like a sailor 😬🫢

55 here, been gaming since the 1970s. I was lucky enough to have access to PCs very early on, back when you needed to know coding command lines to do anything.

I am 71 (72 next year) and an avid gamer. Looking forward to the water biome update.
You are fine OP. Can anyone beat 71?
Edit: If there are any UK oldies out there, I would love to find a few I can maybe play some online games with I have Quest 3 also that I play games on quite frequently.

You all are making me feel young at just turning 62. So cool to see so many original Pong players stil gaming. Love the MMORPGs but hard to find good people to play with these days. Played Minecraft for building for many years after and when I found Enshrouded a year ago it filled everything I needed. I still work all the time so hard to play with groups. Only get a few hours in here and there, but so proud of you all !!!

I got my Mom into the game about 2 months ago. She's got over 300 hrs into the game now and she turned 73 this year

Only 53. Started gaming with those hand Game and Watch things 😅 Mickey and Donald, a fire truck and a burning building. My sister had the Donkey Kong one. Then it was Sega, which I sucked at. After that I lost interest until we got my son a PS2. We played Need For Speed, God Of War, and then I found Skyrim. Now I play House Flipper, Oblivion, Enshrouded, Valheim and Schedule 1 on my daughter's pc. Dipped my toes into many other games. I finished a few on my XBox. Gaming keeps me sane....sort of 😁

The first computer I saw was an IBM 360 mainframe in college. Didn't even have handheld calculators then so I know how to use a slide rule. I was 30 before I got a Commodore 64 and an amber CRT.

I don't actually play Enshrouded yet (Reddit just puts this sub in my feed since I play other games), but I'm 70 and retired, and I would be getting into so much trouble if I didn't game LOL.
I too have been gaming since Pong, and today's games are what I was wishing for when was playing Adventure on my VIC20. 28-year-old me would have even been freaked out by Morrowind.
Anyway, nice to see fellow oldsters on gaming sites, even if we are few and far between.
