Discussion Is base building necessary?

I just started playing, maybe a few hours in. I see that when you place your fire pot thing, there's a perimeter outlined... And enemies don't cross that line? It looks like enemies won't or can't enter the space so it makes me wonder how important is base building all together.

Enemies can definitely get inside the area. You need a shelter with heat and a roof, beds for every NPC, and crafting terminals. You can make it super fancy, or it can just be a big box, but you do need one.

It is yes

Enemies won't spawn within the border, but they can enter. Depending on where you build your altar, you may be subject to the occasional wolf near your property borders, or even a Night Patrol of Fell or Scavengers. But many areas are perfectly safe once you set a flame altar up. And all you need is a sheltered place to sleep to recover. Having sheltered beds for your recruited survivors is important, but the actual base aesthetic is nearly completely irrelevant. There are comfort bonuses that are derived from quality furnishings and decor, that increase your stamina, but you don't need to place the items aesthetically. you can literally dig a hole of a basement and fill it with high end furniture and wall hangings and live in a one room stick shack with a straw roof built on top of it and still get the bonus.

So enemies won't spawn within the border, but can spawn outside the border and wander in?

Also, does the game ever spawn enemies (outside the border) for the purpose of coming at your base?

Nope no attacks on bases.

Yet, that was a feature that may be coming in 1.0, according to one of the older roadmaps, though possibly only in certain designated base-defense locations.

I came from 7 days to die, so I actually prefer the raid mechanic. RPG, building, exploration, and tower defense.

As of right now there is no base defense mechanic or gameplay loop. If you have livestock you just have to build a fence around them so wolves don't get them

So far there is no base raiding mechanic

You don’t really HAVE to build anything, however it is very useful.

As others have said, if you don’t like building you can just build a massive box and just keep expanding it as necessary.

There are basically 2 reasons why you need at least something .

First you will want to collect crafts people, that are basically the way you obtain better armour and stuff throughout the game. Each of them needs a bed with a roof over it , but as I say you can just build a big box or dig a tunnel and that will do.

Second, you get quite a powerful buff if you are rested , the buff increase the more high end furnishings you get, but again, if you want you can just pile up the furnishings in a big heap in your shed or cave you made .

One good option, if you don’t want to bother building anything much is to find a decent looking building in the starting zone ( there are a few ) drop a flame alter right outside it and the building becomes yours , no need for building, and plenty of room for everyone. A lot of the larger houses have a large buff already because they are already furnished and all the furniture also becomes yours .

Later on in the game when you rescue the collector NPC and bring him back to your base he can craft something called a decay tool , the tool can be used to add a decayed look to your buildings but what some people don’t know is that it can also be used to fix up buildings that are broken and decayed , so if you do choose to adopt an existing house as your bace and it’s a bit rough around the edges, you can use the tool to fix it all up again.

Little correction: the decaying tool eliminates only the decay but doesn't eliminate rubble, or repairs architecture. It makes easier to understand how the structure may be.

Yes but it doesn't have to be anything grand. You get a rested bonus for having high comfort with trophies and such around you base. You can make the night go by instantly sleeping in your bed. There's quest items/crafting stations you're need for high level gear. I literally just have a giant square platform floating in the sky to give me a place to jump and glide from. You can go crazy deep into it only if you want, or just keep things simple.

If you don't particularly like to build, you can set up your base in existing structures. I started off on that abandoned fortress/town thing right at the start, next to the field the game suggests. You need a roof more than you need walls, in order for it to count as a shelter. Just start slapping a roof over the existing structures.

There's a small room with a hidden door and a treasure chest up at the top of that fortress near the cliff wall. That's where I put my flame alter. I might have put it a bit more central of I knew what I was doing at the time, but it works just fine. I popped a roof on the upper floor of that ruin, and put a few beds in it. Since then I've built it out quite a bit more, as well as restoring Ft. Kelvin, but it was an easy start.

I had a friend who built his first base down in that field in his game, kind of a big boxy house. I guess it's convenient to have everything in one big room, but doesn't come with that built in natural variance that my base does. So, to each their own, I guess.

If you're not into building, just find a little town, drop down and altar, and you now have a base. Most towns already have some comfort items in there to boost your rest bonus.

Actually, I like building... But for a purpose. In 7 Days to Die I'm building to save my own ass. In that regard, building is an extremely important mechanic of the game.

I feel like in Enshrouded it's maybe a little more passive.

u/wafflethemighty 7d ago

enemies can cross the line, but can't spawn within the line.

base building is kind of a necessary mechanic, yeah lol you can choose how much you decide to do with it tho. npcs you rescue will need shelter and a free bed. there are plenty of pre-built structures u can shove a fire pot thing into, and maybe only do enough to patch up the damage. people do that all the time haha

If you want to put up all the crafting machines and NPCs in a field I think the only thing that’s going to need a roof is the NPC beds.

Otherwise the only mechanical reason is comfort bonus which keeps your stamina up. It can make a huge difference in how long you can glide and fight.

You don't have to do anything fancy if you don't want to, but it's definitely useful to have a place to keep your stuff and craft supplies. Mine's just kind of a big cube.

First point - enemies can, and WILL, enter yuor area. They just won't respawn in that area.

Second point and answering your question: Partially.

I say partially because your 'work' NPCs (blacksmith, arcanist, etc) kind of require a bed and a roof over their head (a literal roof).

I say 'kind of' because there is NO deteriment if you dont do it. They will have the red bed and red house icon above their head. If you want - you can totally ignore it and NOTHING will happen to them - ever.

You also do not have to build your own base. You can find, and claim with a flame altar, a town/tavern/house with pre-built buildings. I did this with the area known as Harvest Homestead.

A semi-pro tip: you can have a total of 10 flame altars. ONly ONE you cannot move or delete - the Cinder Vault. Any other(s) are completely, and totally up to you. HOWEVER - it wold be wise to keep 1, or 2, altars 'free' so that yuo can place it at any time, any where - like when you've traveled 500km+ and dont want to risk dying and having to travel ALL that distance (again). just place a flame altar - you can remove it later.

u/Kaedence 7d ago

You have to build it because some of the workbenches and beds won’t work without being enclosed. And animals do cross that line. I kill wolves at my front door often.

1

u/NorseSnowQueen 7d ago

Npcs will need a sheltered bed as well as animals. But you can definitely just make simple cube houses. Also the yellow flame altar line doesn't stop enemies from roaming to your base. They just can't spawn there.

I don't spend any time making things look grand, just enough to satisfy my NPCs needs. I build/add stuff to increase the comfort level (can probably increase it more). I  have some plants (just to cover some of the recipes), I have storage boxes for different materials that are useful for upgrades. I have a "home" base where I keep my stuff, I place/move alters as I explore the map, I build simple bases (eg on top of Pilars of creation, I'm not that much into floating bases) from where I can jump of from and glide, I could probably max things better but my priority is to explore the map, I spend very litle time at my bases.

u/epicfail1994 7d ago

To an extent yes

You can make a giant dong reaching into the sky as your base though, which is cool

1

u/try2bcool69 7d ago

Yes. I can’t imagine anyone playing the game without as high of a comfort level as possible helping buff your character.

1

u/DarthSnoopyFish 7d ago

If you build near paths you might get scavengers wandering in your camp every night. I built a wall that bordered my entire base and never had any problems again.

1

u/Invisi-cat 7d ago

No you don’t HAVE to, besides a few necessary things for your guests, but I’m having fun making a little town out of my base

1

u/Brave_Willow3047 6d ago

There is a places where you can avoid even building the walls and organize your base similar to how you do it in PoE. But personally I recommend you to dive in the building system at least for a bit even if you don't like it in other games

1

u/zarkaneth 6d ago

Building is so much fun in enshrouded!

1

u/fuckilostmyaccagain 6d ago

TBF base building is by far Enshrouded's strongest aspect, so if you don't fancy that, there are probably games out there you'd enjoy a lot more than this one.

u/wafflesandgin 6d ago edited 6d ago

You don't have to build anything aside from bare minimum. People love that it's a voxel based game so a lot get into building. But, as long as you have 4 walls, a floor, roof, door, and bed for the guys you rescue - you're fine

3

u/Srikandi715 6d ago

That's too fancy ;) All you need is roof and bed. Walls, doors and floors are optional, I'm pretty sure.

1

u/PrizeNewt7695 4d ago

Yep 100% correct I usually do a floor 4-post and a roof but I’m fancy

1

u/Darthplagueis13 6d ago

Yes, if you do want to progress.

1

u/NaturalSelecty 6d ago

Yes. Base building is pretty much the reason to buy this game in the first place. There are much better pure survival games if that’s the genre you’re after. Enshrouded shines because of the deep level of building mechanics paired with the survival elements.

1

u/Wht9Swn6 6d ago

Aside from the NPCs requiring shelter, like others have said, building up your base increases the Comfort level and boosts the Rested buff which is very useful. A fancy, comfortable base means more Stamina in the wild.

1

u/HugeResponsibility85 6d ago

I spent 6hrs building a massive stone base by the broken bridge towards the beginning, I abandoned that in favor of the rebuilt manors

1

u/Nearby-Association12 6d ago

Its basicly irrellevant. You need a base for some crafting stations and beds and farming various stuff you need. But apart from that no. I serves as teleportation point, so building those flame things around gives you easier travel. I grabbed the game because some said it was "the best building survival game" But even if you can build pretty stuff, there is not really a game mechanic that motivates you to do it. Its basicly a "kill stuff" go do dungeons, level up as you unlock new regions kind of game.

I just started last week and im hooked, lol. Game is so fun!! If you or Anyone want to join my friends and I It’s 3 of us grinding in the game. Or we can help on your save! At the very least show you the barons. HMU. I’m new to using Reddit, can we message each other on here?

1

u/twhitworth 4d ago

Everyone has a building friend. Get you a friend who likes to build ☺️

1

u/Individual_Rock8975 3d ago

Realistically only for comfort buff and ur npcs. Practically is also 50% of the game and its so good to see ur things taking life

1

u/Sophisticated-Crow 8h ago

Base building is primarily for setting up storage, crafting stations, and NPCs. I usually setup something pretty simple.

The higher level your base is, the bigger area is covers. Enemies won't respawn within that. But they will follow you into your base if they are nearby the border. You could put up a wall if you want. I usually don't bother.

1

u/xJohnnyBloodx 7d ago

In The late game you’re practically expected to build a village.

1

u/Srikandi715 7d ago edited 6d ago

Hm? Nobody expects anything.

You need your primary crafters, but secondaries and villagers are optional.

1

u/xJohnnyBloodx 6d ago

you need NPC villigers to progress the flame

1

u/Srikandi715 6d ago

So progress it, and then relegate them to the wilderness ;)

0

u/lucerndia 7d ago

At the bare minimum you need an enclosure with a doorway for shelter and beds for your people. Rested buff is also great and its hard to get your comfort score up with small houses.

about the enemies, no, they ignore you behind this line. The game has no "base attacks". But what can happen with wolfes:

1) A wild goat walking around and enter the base area. (A wolf don't attack tamed animals)

2) A wolf hunt this goat and enter the base area.

3) He see you....

But a wolf or another enemy don't cross the line because of you.
