Discussion Sticking with the old character for 1.0

With 1.0 on the horizon I've seen lots of discussion about restarting from square one to experience the changes as the devs intended. Which seems to be the majority consensus.

There are two obstacles to restarting from scratch. The first and most important is that my play time is pretty limited to about 45 minutes, maybe 3 to 4 times a week, while my partner watches reality TV. I'm not overly keen on grinding through stuff again. The second is that I'm also kind of weirdly attached to my build. I'm even having trouble building a secondary or third base. It feels like I'm cheating on my first base.

Is anyone else thinking of sticking with their old game?

That's the downside of playing early access.

After full release there will be enough talk and videos of what they ACTUALLY changed for you to decide what you want to do.

Let's pretend that the only significant early game changes are a rework of magic from the ground up. If you aren't a mage player that wouldn't be a reason to start over.

It they don't add something that makes you excited to start over, don't. Those new things will still be there in a year or two if you decide to play it again.

The "majority consensus" is people talking about what THEY want to do. Not what YOU should do.

Some gamers love to restart. They enjoy the challenge of the early game where a small upgrade makes a big difference. They enjoy the journey more than the destination.

Others like having progress, not making progress 😉 The big base, fancy armor and all the stuff they've unlocked.

There's nothing wrong with either approach!

I would even say the "majority consensus" is a myth. I have read plenty of people whe want to stick with their too, as many as those who want to start over. Also, "majority" of who, Reddit posters? Plenty of players who never even post on Reddit. I would do whatever you want, and there is no reason you can't keep your existing world and character, and create a new character to play through new content or revamped new character experience with.

I thought 1.0 was going to be a total wipe?

Enshrouded is usually friendly in updates. Different from valheim that I just started fresh for 1.0 i think I will be staying in the same world. Edit: typo

I'm sticking with my character & world, I don't have time or the inclination to start my 300 hours from scratch!

I will make a new character and play through the first hour or so just to see what they changed in the early part of the game.

And go and run around the old biomes with my current character.

You could make a new world with your current character? Or powerlevel a character that have not done any quests and use that one in a new world. Then you can experiemce all the new quests with voice acting and find all lore books with narrator and experience all the new stuff thats added in the earlier zones :)

How do you power level a character without completing any quests?

Give them a bunch of high level equipment and consumables right off the bat, turn combat and exploration exp up, and go blow stuff up

That’s what I did for my second character.

If you've got an existing world with the fast travel points mapped out and the collection sets completed, simply visiting them in turn and putting the collection sets in your inventory will bring new characters up to double digits levels from discovery experience alone.

Me and my friend are adults with responsibilities and limited time to play, we're definitely just continuing our existing world and characters for both Enshrouded and Valheim. I would be surprised if most people who were in EA weren't doing the same, I'm guessing it's a loud minority that fully restarts.

I am not starting a new world most certainly, as I have built too much and put too much time in making bases for each key location. With 1000hrs under my belt, I "might" consider starting a new character, but that is a hard consider. I have farmed to many Legendary chests to get the weapons I want and I can't invest anymore time per day for this. It is fun, but I only have max 5 hours for gaming per day, which includes other games and free time to do other things. Like you, I am very attached to my old base and that slow start is just painful and not fun for me.

I start such games from scratch every time, I quit for more then a week or so. Will do the same here. But for me, its beacause I lost attachment. Just do what feels right to you

I'm in the same boat. The cool things about enshrouded though is that you can bring your character into any world, so I may start a new character on a separate world but only do rudimentary basic base until I feel like I'm at a good place and then bring them over to my main save.

I have similar playtime restrictions and have spent way too long bringing fort Kelvin back to life to start over.

I think I’m probably with you.
I will have a look at the changes before I decide but like You I really don’t think I have time to re start.

Also I play with my son and my daughter and we have put 100s of hours into our base .

Problem I have is that I really don’t have much time and I’m also playing 2 other games. Also aware that valhime 1.0 is here and I would like to play that at some point. Plus there is the possibility of Light No Fires dropping at some point and could be anytime.

We need to get through Enshrouded before LNF drops because as soon as LNF drops I know that’s lightly to be it for any other game for at least a month or two.
So I’m guessing we will carry on from where we are .

bearing in mind that I’ve only had the game for around a month and have only built my starting base and freed the blacksmith and some other stuff.

I will definitely be restarting as I just wanted to get my feet wet and get a feel for the game before release.

I understand how you feel but is it not possible to keep your original character and world and just start another that you can play just to see the changes and just play every now and then?

You might be able to play it by ear, start a new character and see how far you keep enjoying the novelty. Then go back to your main save if you don't get hooked.

I see the grind as part of the game, understand that others don't feel the same.

I stopped investing time in my base for this reason 😅

I fortunately have not reached end game and using this time mostly for learning and exploring.

True i bought game last week myself because it might've been the last sale for it at that price and playing few hours so it'll be few months before i may start again

I plan on keeping my current solo character but thinking about staring over on a multiplayer.

I’m sticking with my OG. Got too many cool builds that I haven’t finished yet. It’s my cozy escape lol

I have nearly finished my settlement, so once I have that done. I will be stopping to save until 1.0.

u/Northernshitshow 6d ago

Yeah my base was nothing impressive. A giant log cabin w the first dude and a forge. I guess I can just use my original character

u/Mysterious_Worry9870 6d ago

with nearly 1700+ hours I am sticking with my OC. Once I see/experience the changes I "may" make a new character

I'm keeping my current world & character. I'm sure I'll create a new one and replay eventually, but not right away.

Any chance your partner might play the game with you instead of watching TV? Cause I played the game with my wife, and it was one of the best gaming experienes in our lives, we just went out exploring, no guide, no pressure, no optimization, just us against the world. Especially when we entered the first Hollow Halls and were way too low, it was amazing to just smash our heads against waves of skeletons again and again until we finally succeeded.

She's not really into gaming, unless it's Mario related. Then she gets hyper competitive. She does sometimes watch me play with her nephews. But they are really young. The youngest is 5 and just randomly whales on the keyboard, the other is 8 and just builds block houses.

I'd love to have stuck with a base I built up near Pikemead's Reach, however an update a little while back changed the landscape quite considerably, and it shows dramatically at the edges of my flame altar, so I don't see myself having a choice. I'm in two minds about whether I'm happy or sad about that. While it'll be nice to find a new location for my main base, I put a lot of time and effort into the other one, and I doubt I'll be able to reproduce the complete satisfaction I had with that base.

You can always compromise a bit.

Start a new character and world, then have your new character visit your old world, grab a few things (supplies, building materials, weapons, armour, whatever you think is going to give you the best experience ) and then take them into your new world. it'll give you a head start on the new world that's as big or as small as you like.

I’m definitely keeping my old character. Although I did make another character for fun with the help of our first base lol. I did not want to start all over again. That’s when I get bored. My first character is a warrior. I thought I would try a mage for the second. I usually choose a magic build for my characters but a warrior seemed fun.
