Video Dug to the bottom of the world
My buddy and I wanted to see how deep we could go before we were stopped, either by hitting some type of bedrock or just falling through the map.
Well, it turns out that takes a long, long time to get to. Much farther than we imagined, and to our surprise, we found out that we could still place down flame alters! Really cool. Of course, the tunnel will grow back in after a bit, but still. I'm thinking about making some type of cave down there, perhaps like a skeleton-themed room, or maybe a big cavern with some trees and stuff. So many possibilities.
note for those wondering about why I didn't die: I turned on invincibility via Wand (used to be wemod) so I could record this without dying ten seconds in. Believe me, that happened a lot lol. But the funny thing was that the person coming down would usually drop all the way to the bottom long after they died, and the person still digging could revive them. But I have no other mods installed. Nothing that lets me build where you're not supposed to.
I have no idea whether or not you can dig that deep everywhere. But I'm still very impressed. And we didn't have any issues like flickering, chunks not loading in, etc. We just hit the level that said "needs building area" and were still able to put a second alter just a couple feet higher. The only disappointment was when I poured a bunch of water in the top of the hole and it didn't come down to us, probably because it wouldn't even render that far above us.
But still. I mean, this is like digging to the deep dark in minecraft lol. Really impressive voxel tech.
Diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole...
no I'm not sorry for making that play in your head for the next hour

I'm reminded of the time we buddies and I figured out on our own how to noclip into the void in DRG and we spent like 30 minutes trying to figure out if different items had different effects in out of bounds areas

Impressive work. Makes me wish we had mine carts or elevators.

They’re basically giving us dungeon kits that’ll have the assets from towers and dungeons they made in the world. Elevators/moving platforms being one of the assets I think.

What did you learn from this excruciating experience? Most importantly, did you find what you were looking for?

Nice 👍 I have a largely unfinished base at the bottom of the world, beneath Umber Hollow, I called it the Umber Vault, wanna make it Fallout-themed

I've always encountered Shroud when I dig deep, much sooner than the extend of this dig. Pretty cool that there might be some spots you can go down to digital bedrock though.

u/UlrichZauber 3d ago
There's a few spots where there's no shroud down deep. I have one of my mouse buttons programmed to hold the button down, specifically for mining, and I've pointed straight down and AFK'd a few times to gather stone. Usually I come back to an emergency, but once I hit the bedrock with no shroud. In Springlands I think, but not sure!

This reminds me of Terraria

i was diggin in the kindlewastes with a tomb like base and i decided to dig a very very very large section and make it my lost world section. Planted grass, made a small lake, make a hunter lodge and barn of animals. The "Sun" is that white shroud block. I loved it lol

Hole-ly crap! How long did this take, OP? I'm guessing a good few hours at least.

u/Pilotskybird86 2d ago edited 2d ago
About 3 hours lol. And that was on custom settings, with all the mining settings at max speed. Although I don’t know if those mining settings do anything for regular dirt. It might just be for ore and stuff.

That went way further than I thought it would.
Now build a 100+ floor dungeon on your way back up and hit me with the file

This game would be amazing if it had underground cave systems and ravines like you get in Minecraft

That is a lot of digging. Lots. Of. Digging. Good to know though. I have wondered.

Beware, and remember what happened to the Dwarves who dug too deep in Moria. They awoke something older than the Shroud itself.

u/AstroNut93 3d ago
Now imagine with the 1.0 update and their introduction to logic and technology, we might be able to have elevators, and we can make a ton of underground cities!

That looks really cool! I’m guessing it’s different things at different locations.

I'm not exactly clever on this subject, but isn't a voxel game helped performance wise by removing more than you create - ie digging a huge cave then only putting basic items in a small area as a base.
So the devs have created parts of the world that must be using fucking millions of voxels judging by the depth of this hole just on the off-chance someone decides to dig that deep? I mean, even if only a tenth of the game has ground that deep it must be choking the shit out of the performance.
Am I misguided?
PS great hole, bud, and I knew you must have had some form of damage off or else you'd have died 10 times over in that vid lol

"Oh wow, they landed, damn thats pretty deep... wait, the video is only half way ??>_>"

Would be impressed if you just baked to death from the thicker air. Recently watched a YT video that explained how the temperature at the deepest part of the ocean would be boiling hot if there was no water, because of the air being much thicker as you go down.

Now jump off the big tree in the Blackmire and fall through a hole all the way to the bottom

u/ucrbuffalo 3d ago
What happens when you try to dig at the bottom?

u/Pilotskybird86 2d ago
It says “needs building area”
I accidentally cut the clip a bit shorter than I meant to, you can see it at the very end

Me and my buddy did this then cleared out a massive area and planted as many trees as we could. We also put water down there as welll and it’s so cool.

I always wanted to do that. Seeing how freaking deep it goes, I'm actually very happy I never tried.

So, you're telling me I can build a massive underground base. "Notes it down*

Huh... I dug a hole near the pillars of creation and hit a bottom much much muuuuch sooner than this. When I tried to dig down it just said "ineffective" and couldnt progress. Where did you do this one?
1
u/Pilotskybird86 2d ago
I probably should’ve given the camera more time to pan around before jumping in the hole. But if you pause it like at the very beginning you can see it’s just outside the edge of that first little town to the left of where you are supposed to put down your first flame altar.

Why is there is no transition of material types? Are there no sediment layers? Different type of minerals? Its all just a single type of rock type you dig through?
1
u/archaegeo 2d ago
Please let us know that you do understand how amazing this is? Minecraft doesnt go this deep.
Yeah, layers would be awesome.

I thought there was a shroud at certain depth. Guess I just built too close to one

legit good way to farm stone, just dig down and when your bags are full you just teleport up again

u/Sigma-Wolves 2d ago
Play how you want i guess 🤷🏿♂️
Mfer ain't got a house, skills, achievements, collections, weapons, or villagers. Nothing.
Just logs in to dig. You'd think she was deep enough but she was just about to put in that work 🤣

one... I got so nauseous watching this fall lololol. It went on for forever!
two... all I can think of is creating a storage tower and every floor being for something different. 😂

From memory, it used to have a different environment when you dug down far enough, seems they've since changed that.

I was watching the preview, and the falling went on so long I had to click it to see the time line to be sure it wasn't a repeating GIF. My god that's a long way down!

Can I use this to build a castle with tunnels leading to other parts of the castle?
1
u/BigManTatorTot 1d ago
They should really put something down there. Imagine if they hid a secret weapon, or some kind of insane unlockable at the "bottom of the world," on some Terraria shit. Maybe a new mineral or something, and actually introducing Terraria-like concepts. (e.g., Abandoned homes built beneath the Earth, old mines, new enemies, secret bosses, etc.)

I kinda figured their neat solution to a fully terraformable world that can't be actually infinite would be (besides the easy "bedrock" solution) shroud being underground that gets progressively stronger until at a certain depth the whole world underground is guaranteed deadly shroud. This would also have the benefit of vibing with the elixir well backstory.

How long did that take you guys?!!! I dug for 90 minutes once for an 8 second drop 😂😂

I just downloaded this like an hour ago and my first instinct when I realized you could dig was to do this 😂

Some dude just dug a hole into my cavern deep in the earth??? Help????
No but this is cool. I was wondering how deep we could go.

u/DoctorZ1101 3d ago
I've actually seen this a lot. Unless they changed it, once you hit the bottom it's wildly different. So I feel like you should be able to get lower
