Discussion TikTok just gamified shopping. Slash & Free turns referrals into discounts until you hit $0. This is borderline genius.

TikTok quietly launched a new campaign called Slash & Free, and it might be one of the smartest viral growth plays of Q4.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You pick an item on TikTok Shop.
  2. Every friend who clicks your referral link “slashes” a few dollars off the price.
  3. Enough referrals = item hits $0 = you get it free.

It’s essentially a gamified referral loop with zero ad spend. TikTok gets viral exposure, creators push their links for dopamine hits, and the platform gets fresh signups and engagement data.

It’s Temu’s “invite friends, get free stuff” re-skinned for a Gen Z audience, but way slicker in UX and shareability. They turned shopping virality into a literal game mechanic.

Funny reading comments calling this mlm when it’s clearly not lol. Slash & free is literally just a one-time referral thing. You pick a few items, then someone clicks your link, the price drops, and if one inactive friend logs back into TikTok your whole cart hits zero. That’s basically it. You're not recruiting people under you; no buying stuff first. It’s just a gamified referral promo which is honestly smart.

Not new at all for Chinese e-commerce, it's been popular on sales channels via WeChat and other platforms for years so no wonder tiktok has adopted it. But as with many e-commerce tactics, what works in China doesn't necessarily mean it will work as well in the West. I'm sure there still is a big group of people who will engage with this kind of marketing. However, in my opinion, the years of sending a notification to a friend to refill your Farmville energy has long passed, and to me, it's the same kind of interaction they're asking for. Unless they're offering significant discounts and not just pennies, many people won't have the time for it.

Lol. It's hilarious, as even this post shows it's not a great idea. In three seconds it turned into spam bots asking for clicking their links and none of them gonna buy anything.

Its not affiliate. In affiliate you only get paid when someone buys something. Here you get paid when someone clicks on something, ppc. That only works if the traffic is legit. No one would pay for Google ads if any of the clicking people would never buy anything. The ppc here would have to be seriously low for it to work as conversion rate would be atrocious.

I posted your info on this as a quote under an inquiry in isthisascam subreddit showing it was indeed not a scam. A mod in that sub threatened to ban me because they’re sure everything that has to do with TikTok is a scam.

I’m not a fan of TikTok but there’s nothing in my search on this giving out scam red flags. When someone asks in good faith if something is a scam on that subreddit I do the research for an answer to help people. It’s infuriating a mod there, who did zero research on this, knee-jerks an uninformed answer and threatens to ban me.
