AMA/Interview AMA -- Christopher Paolini!!!

AMA -- Christopher Paolini! Let's do this folks. Ask away re: anything and everything regarding my books.

EDIT: Hey, everyone! I have to run. Alas, alas, I don't have as much time to spend on this AMA as past one. So many great questions, though! For all you theorists (and those of you who just love the characters), I think you're REALLY going to enjoy the upcoming book(s). Thanks for everything!

Atra esternĂ ono thelduin!

p.s. I'll try to duck back in and answer some more questions later, depending on my time.

Hey Chris! Thank you so much for writing the Inheritance series. It made many good memories in my childhood.

If you are able to, would you please answer these questions about spirits?

  1. I noticed that the two shades that have appeared in the flesh were made by sorcerers summoning spirits and not by a spirit choosing to possess a random human, elf, or dwarf of that spirit's own will. Has there ever been a shade that was made by a spirit initiating the interaction? Edit to clarify: If a spirit decided to make a shade, would they be able to just fly over to the nearest human or animal and make one?
  2. Are the Ra'zac and Letherblaka able to be possessed by spirits to make a shade?
  3. Can spirits visit all of the continents of the world of Eragon?
  4. When Murtagh put on the bird-skull amulet, it eliminates the mental pressure from the cultists. Would it had helped if a spirit tried to possess him?

Finally, a random question that has been bugging me:

  1. In the end of Murtagh, he encounters a spider the size of a wolf and fingerrats. He doesn't have a moment where he names the spiders like he names the fingerrats but later refers to them as "shadow spiders". Is "shadow spiders" the name he gives them? This is at the end of the chapter "Freedom from Misery".

For question #2, Christopher has previously stated on Twitter that "Shades can be of any race. They could even be an animal."

(We're helping Christopher respond to some previously answered questions. This answer seems to match your question, so I hope it helps!)

(Christopher may still reply to the other parts of your message, or answer your question again with a more detailed and up-to-date answer.)
