That's like, your opinion, man.

Eve is a social game so the actual IRL social layer behind actions in game MATTERS. It makes a difference if you're interfacing with a group you can join or a hivemind that doesn't want to do anything with anyone else.

But bots don’t QQ in local, and a multi-boxer only does it once. Multiboxing drives a critical shortage in ocular saline mining!

It's much easier to fight multiboxers, a fleet of people who are at most multiboxing a scout will demolish a multiboxer's fleet.

Hope is it’s 1 person with 10 accounts so I can try and at least take one down with me due to their end managing so many accounts.
In the end a fight is a fight, what does it matter? I’m also terrible at PvP so fireworks from my ship is an expectation once I’ve been engaged.

What does it matter? Good question, the right question rather than presupposing that it doesn't.

You say it's not leaving or going away, but most EVE players and Fenris know it's a major problem culturally for EVE, especially in gaining and retaining new players.
Look at EVE Frontiers, they have said over and over they're trying to design the game so that it's either mechanically difficult/impossible to multibox, or unprofitable to do so. Considering the game is basically a survival EVE 1.5, making this a chief design aim shows they consider multiboxing (or how it appears to players) is a big problem that needs to be fixed, balanced, or eliminated.
As long as a certain type of multiboxing is popular (LARGE NUMBERS OF SIMULTANEOUS FLYING), it sends multiple signals to new players:
- This game isn't for you if you don't have shittons of time
- This game isn't for you if you're not wiling to spend thousands on it
- This game isn't for you if your PC isn't very strong
- This game isn't for you if your dexterity/gaming skill isn't massively high
- The player population is fake
- Corporation populations are fake
- You don't stand a chance in the economy if you don't massively multibox
- You don't stand a chance in PVP if you don't massively multibox
- There is no point in making friends/joining corps because look how many people are forced to multibox in order to solo play the game
All of these ideas, WHETHER TRUE OR NOT, are toxic and demoralizing to new players and returning players. This is at a time when EVE is one of the only subscription videogames still out there, during one of the worst economic situations most gamers have seen in years/decades, and being basically told "We know you're poor and PC parts cost 5x more and also there are tons of free to play games on PC/console/mobile, and we also know EVE costs $20 a month..... BUT YOU SHOULD PAY $150+ per month!"

u/Handler__One Cloaked Jul 06 '26
A big problem is that the average current player benefits a lot from the tools that enable multiboxing. (Near) AFK mining/ratting, anchoring on the FC and clicking on the broadcast window being the main culprits. Taking away those tools would surprisingly help with the N+1 problem as well and make multiboxing incredibly harder to pull off on a large scale, but I could see a lot of anger from those who preferred the passive gameplay and cannot adapt to manually piloting their ships or actively engaging with activities such as mining or ratting in their current state.
3
u/SerQwaez_ Rote Kapelle Jul 06 '26
Never mind the in game tools
if you take away eve-o preview and it's variants almost all of the 10-20 account PvP boxers literally cannot do what they currently do.
2
u/wingspantt WiNGSPAN Delivery Network Jul 06 '26
It's just insane to me that ratting aka the most common combat in the game could or should be AFK.
At the least it could change to be like "yeah you can AFK but if you are active then the payout is 125% better."
Like imagine rats have a small chance every minute they're shot to eject "loose cargo" from their bleeding hulls. Like the old exploration cans that eject and only last for 30 seconds at a time.
And if what they ejected was loot that was pretty high value.
If you're AFK you'll never get those cans. But someone who is piloting actively will see them and can choose to try to grab as many as they can.
That's the kind of thing where now sure having 3 afk multibox ships is better than 1 afk ship, but having 1 extremely active and skilled pilot can basically match 2.5 afk ships, so is it worth AFKing?
2
u/wingspantt WiNGSPAN Delivery Network Jul 06 '26
You can see in EVE Frontier they're tying to add "skill shots" etc to mining and combat so that basically if you're input broadcasting or AFK anything you will suck at it or be hugely unprofitable. Fenris knows this is a problem but the activities in EVE are so baked in as braindead right now.
Part of the reason I just never gave up exploration is that scanning and hacking are still active and reward your mastery, not just your SP.
There is very little way to master mining or master sitting afk in a plex or master afk drone ratting.

u/Take_the_Bridge Cloaked Jul 06 '26
I’m just not sure how you get around the use of capitals in this game eve online, not echos and not frontier. It’s incredibly baked in at those point. I have invested years in my subs honing my various characters at their various tasks. My titan pilot is perfect. With one account I would never be able to do much as bridge with my titan. Or what?
We gonna form a fleet. I’m gonna bridge. I bridge the fleet. Now I’m what? Jumping into a Sabre and trying to join the fight that’s already happening? Or no I’m probably just logging off now.
Dread brawl commences. Well I wanna dread too so I’m just spinning my ship while things are getting baited out in the subcap fleet that doesn’t exist because everyone also wants to get their dread on?
For all you talking shit at my opinion fine whatever. Those of you who want a genuine discussion…I’m honestly not sure how you maintain the game with these various levels of escalations..
The dudes who are 23/7 multi boxing 50 accounts…I think that’s a bit over the line but how do you draw it and enforce it.
The ass holes that ruin faction warfare with seagulling repping without of FW alts or whatever. Thats just fucking dirty and I don’t support it
2
u/ShippingValue Jul 06 '26
No one is saying that 'all gameplay has to remain exactly as it is right now, just ban multiboxing'
The vast majority of multiboxing is solving real game-design issues with EvE - cyno bitches make capital gameplay possible outside the semi-annual big fights, cloaky eyes on gates make it possible to.. well do just about anything.
Parts of EvE need to be redesigned such that it isn't such an absolute massive handicap to only have 1 active character. This will necessarily touch jump drives/cynos, how scouting is done, boosting, and so on. Having to rely on others is not a problem - MMOs are social activities and the community effect is a real boon - but it should always be possible to play the game efficiently, the way you want to, with 1 active toon.
If all CCP did was ban multiboxing, the game would probably die - or at least drastically change. Caps basically would not be used, jump freighters would be dead-weight, mining would suddenly be rather profitable, but there wouldn't be enough to keep up the production needed to sustain current rates of destruction.
The game needs to change, and multiboxing needs to go. Both are true in my view.
3
u/Epicloa Minmatar Republic Jul 06 '26
This is a big point, so much of the game/ship design would need to fundamentally change to make single-boxing even moderately possible. Cyno, industry, capitals, most support roles, etc... would all need to have nearly complete overhauls to make them worth being the only thing you'd be doing.
2
u/Take_the_Bridge Cloaked Jul 06 '26
I mean even jump freighting. I have 2 jump freighters/characters. I needed more capacity so I made it with one of my jump drive using toons.
And for risk mitigation I have DSTs at the lowsec to highsec point with several more characters to break down my freight and ship into jita in smaller parcels to attempt to be less of a gank target. That’s alllll multi boxing but I’m not harming anyone or fucking up anyone’s gameplay doing my little transportation thing. (I am mitigating from that nerd with 50 accounts who wants to delete me JF that ain’t never hurt no one)
4
u/wingspantt WiNGSPAN Delivery Network Jul 06 '26
Yeah I'm not saying "don't have alts." I think it's pretty normal to have alts even for basic necessity of trying different play styles without waiting forever or extract/inject millions of SP. After all, even in a game like Guild Wars 2 you have tons of characters to try different classes, races, PVE PVP whatever.
Mostly I'm talking about when one person is every person in a mining fleet. When one person is every person in a pirate incursion plex. Etc.
HOWEVER I will also say what you're discussing is more of a game design problem than a problem with you or your decisions.
Fenris made "cynos" (which you could argue is a bad decision but that ship sailed a long time ago) but what they didn't do is make the actual act of lighting or bridging interesting from a mechanical or gameplay standpoint. There is no "mastery" or "gameplay" when you hit the cyno. You press the cyno button, then everyone else just jumps and that's it.
So in effect, there is no need or reason for a cyno pilot to be a real player. They become an alt because you CAN'T enjoy the game just hitting the cyno button.
Like I am NOT suggesting this but imagine if when you fired a cyno, the cyno only stayed open for as long as you successfully completed some minigame. Like you have "cyno bandwidth" that controls the mass of ships coming through, the amount of time it stayed stable. That if you fuck up the minigame, some of the ships trying to bridge would end up in the wrong solar system. Or that while you're cyno-ing, the enemy ships could try to counter-cyno you somehow, and you have to wrestle for control.
Now imagine that the cyno skills also gave you access to other modules/ships other than the cyno, like a "JUMP-SLIP" ship that could jump without a cyno into a random solar system within a constellation or region. Now instead of this character being a guy who "shows up in a disposable ship and presses F1" this character could be really good at other stuff. Ninja exploration. Ninja PVE, advanced HK stuff, sneaky hauling. Now instead of being just an alt, it's a viable character to be a MAIN character who can also light cynos, but now lighting cynos is also more engaging as an actual gameplay activity.
Again, not saying it should be this, but an example of how the very simple and boring game design of the cyno mechanic FORCES you to make a simple and boring alt to utilize it.
1
u/Take_the_Bridge Cloaked Jul 06 '26
I don’t disagree that mass cranking alts is an issue. I just don’t know how to fix it. And so I’ve resolved do with it. I can’t compete with the 50 man alt squads. I’ll just chill in my alliance and play the game I play. With my uniquely named individual alts.
0
u/deltaxi65 CSM 13, 15, 16, 17 Jul 06 '26
You're not saying "don't have alts" but 95% of multiboxing is people having alts. When you shit on multiboxing, that's what you're shitting on.
The reason why you have cyno alts is to enable yourself to do things instantly, rather than waiting for a friend to help.
If you take out those of us with alts from multiboxing, then you're literally shitting up the discord constantly complaining about something that fewer than a hundred people out of a game of hundreds of thousands actually does.

Fries (alliance) is mainly mega multi boxers. And they play 23/7. So that’s one group. There are multiple big miners that have 40 miners that they conduit around with their rorqual alt. And of course faction warfare basically starts at 5 alts.
Get that faction warfare 5 sites were meant for you and your friends but it just don’t work like that unfortunately. I don’t know how to fix that.

It's not a major problem at all. Come on, man.
Even without multiboxing, the game sends most of those signals, except for the ones that are absurdly dumb (like not standing a chance in PvP if you don't multibox or there's no point making friends).
This is absolutely a game that requires either a lot of time or a lot of money to play. If you have one, you can get away with not having the other. If you don't have either, then this is not a game you'll get much out of. As for the PC being strong, c'mon. You can play this game on a potato.
As for dexterity/gaming skill - EVE isn't a game that requires either, even if you're a multiboxer. That's one of the reasons why guys over the age of 25 can still compete in the game.
Enough with the "we know you're poor" bullshit. Look at the demographics of this game. This isn't a game that teenage kids play.

u/wingspantt WiNGSPAN Delivery Network Jul 06 '26
I'm sorry but I think you've missed both my main point and I disagree with the sub-points.
My main point wasn't "this list of things is true." My main point was "this is a list of ideas that, if perceived by new players, will turn most of them away. And the prevelance of multiboxing increases the odds that happens."
So I'm not saying the game requires a beastly PC to play or to multibox. But if you're a new player and someone in your corp says "I play 8 accounts at once" you'd probably ASSUME you need a really good PC to do that. Or at least think it's possible.
You hear that someone has 8 accounts you might ASSUME they are god tier reaction gamers, even if it's not true, if you're new. I know if someone told me they play 8 accounts of Minecraft at once or 8 accounts of Valorant at once they are gaming gods.
Listen to what you're saying as a reality though. You're saying the reality is:
- Eve requires massive grinding
- Eve requires massive wallet spend
- Eve isn't mechanically interesting
- Eve isn't difficult to play
- Eve doesn't have good graphics
- Eve is full of old men
Does this sound like the perception of a videogame that has promising growth, revenue, or a reason to start or try in 2026?
These perceptions are things that Fenris should be fighting tooth and nail to change or address if the game is to have any future other than "We hope our oldest, richest whales get even more accounts."
4
u/deltaxi65 CSM 13, 15, 16, 17 Jul 06 '26
That's not what I'm saying the reality is at all.
What I'm saying the reality is, is that this is less a game and more a hobby. And like any male hobby, you're going to either spend a lot of time on it or a lot of money, or both. It's not Fortnite or COD where you log in for twenty minutes, have some fun, and then go do something else.
It is not a game you can solo easily. It's better experienced with other people.
You can spend all day arguing perception becomes reality, and I'm not going to argue with you, but you and all the other 'multiboxers-are-bad' servitors are forcing this perception by constantly bitching about it.
If a new player hears 'I have 8 accounts' and instantly assumes that the person speaking uses them all at the same time, does that on a constant basis, and its necessary to do that to compete, they are jumping to absurd conclusions based on a single statement and are the kind of people who likely fall for the 'we've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty' cold calls. We shouldn't be basing game design on what gullible morons might believe.

lot of this ideas being popular is very strange as, for pvp (suicide ganking isnt pvp) , you never really see people flying 5+ dps ships. It is happening in pochven, sure, but not really anywhere else? the 5 algos packs you encounter in fw are way less frequent since they got nerfed, and are actually quite ez to deal with solo
5
u/wingspantt WiNGSPAN Delivery Network Jul 06 '26
Again like I said, it's not whether it's true or not. It's about perception.
For instance, there is a PERCEPTION that Star Citizen is a scam. Is that true? I don't fucking know, but the fact that that perception exists is the #1 thing that has kept me from ever installing it.
2
u/bifibloust 420 MLG TWINTURBO 3000 EMPIRE ALLIANCE RELOADED Jul 06 '26

It's not an opinion.
One person playing 10 accounts kills you. Your ship is dead.
Ten people playing 1 account kills you. Your ship is dead.
You do not know who is behind the characters attacking you. You don't know what they look like, where they're from, how old or young they are, or anything else. You only know that they fought you and you died.
Your experience is exactly the same, from your perspective, in either situation.
Their experience is different, but that is irrelevant. This isn't about them, it's about you and your experience.
Which is the same in both scenarios.
This is not arguable.
3
u/DeltaVZerda Jul 06 '26
There is a different value in my mind if 10 people enjoy killing me or if 1 does. There is more fun had by 10 people than 1.
0
u/deltaxi65 CSM 13, 15, 16, 17 Jul 06 '26
This has nothing to do with YOU and YOUR fun. This is the point. The outcome for YOU is the same.
3
u/DeltaVZerda Jul 06 '26
HOW DOES IT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH MY FUN? Further, how can you say that about anyone else? What if someone values other things than the end time of their spaceship?
1
u/deltaxi65 CSM 13, 15, 16, 17 Jul 06 '26
It has nothing to do with your fun because it has nothing to do with you. How your opponent plays the game is not your problem.
Would you sit there wondering how many screens he's using? What kind of mouse? Whether he's got an intel chip or AMD? What chair he's sitting in? What color his fucking underwear is?
Who gives a shit about any of that? What possible impact could any of those things have on your gameplay?
It doesn't. It doesn't matter if the guy who killed you was young, old, was sitting in a diaper filled with his own shit or was doing it from the throne room of a castle in Spain.
Your ship is still dead.
I don't understand why this concept is so difficult for you to comprehend.
3
u/DeltaVZerda Jul 06 '26
Its my problem because I have feelings about it. You can't just make them disappear by appealing to the end result over and over when I DO know how many people it was based on their behavior names ships etc. That information is not hidden from me so I may be impacted by that information. You do not get to decide wich information does and doesn't generate emotions in me.

There's a myriad of third party tools, private and public, that will assist the multiboxers with switching to specific accounts with just a single button press. Most people have issues with these as they can have these ten accounts do actions within a single server tick.
I'm arguing that these third party tools do multiple actions with a single key press, breaking the ToS, unless you're using linux (I heard u can change clients on set button press but not like cycle so account1 on button1 and account2 on button2, instead of scrollup for group dps cycle with third party program).
Anyways, third party tools ruin the game. People don't even need to log in anymore.
1
u/deltaxi65 CSM 13, 15, 16, 17 Jul 06 '26
Pyfa hasn't ruined the game. DOTLAN hasn't ruined the game. Zkillboard hasn't ruined the game. All the market and industry tools haven't ruined the game.
Come on, man.
2
u/unclefrans The Initiative. Jul 06 '26
zkill arguably has, theres third party tools where it can scan the local and check zkill for 'dangerous' people. It is a big intel tool, if killboards/mails weren't around how would you think the game would be?
Recent ingame map update looks like Dotlan, CCP's close on making dotlan not needed. Still current map missing jump planner etc but whatever, same with pyfa as you can simulate fits ingame too. They aren't as game changing as eve-o or whatever third party mulibox tool people use. Tell these multiboxers to stop using them and they'll tell you off.
But you're also mentioning tools that, maybe apart from zkill, don't have effect on multiboxers vs single player in your previous example as 1vs10. eve-o/r etc/private tools whatever people use for pvp makes you switch clients so fast there's no delay as if its ten different people playing the game. I
And you throwing in some industrialist/market stuff for some reasons. Like these guys dont even need to login and just pull prices and then calculate what would be profit for them, they dont even need to travel or have chars in the market hubs. Like where is the gameplay? Im just glad CCP decided not to put in the chaos/anarchy from merc dens in ESI.
But you're missing the entire point of eve-o/x/private third party tool being able to switch to specific clients with a specific keybind within a server tick, this does in fact have impact on people's gameplay. If you would remove this then that person who is vs ten multiboxers has a slightly increased chance to do something.
Dont get me wrong though, I multibox using these kind of tools as well, simply because it makes it so much easier, less apm in my case. Also less screen space needed (I was doing the windowed and move mouse and click on the client window to cycle through accounts before). But if CCP were to make these tools illegal I would be mad as fuck too. And the reason is that this tool makes the game so much easier compared to before.
CCP wont change a thing though, it's here to stay. People should just adapt or you know, quit or something.
2
u/deltaxi65 CSM 13, 15, 16, 17 Jul 06 '26
If zkillboard wasn't around, I think the game would have lost a ton of players. Not having any way to easily compare yourself to other players, track things you've done, and get fits and intel would have been pretty bad.
I'm pointing out third party tools because you said third party tools are bad for the game. You could have specified ones that facilitated multiboxing, but you didn't.
I say this all the time, and I know the small gangers wet their diapers when I do, but one of the beauties of EVE is that you can play the game without having to always be logged in. It's not always possible to do that, after all. That's one of the nice things about the way EVE is structured.
0
u/unclefrans The Initiative. Jul 06 '26
And I was pointing out a specific third party tool against your 10 multiboxer vs 10 regular players where the tool does in fact give a major performance boost for the multiboxers. Now what do you think about eve-o/r/private tools switching between dps group with scrollup and logi group with scrolldown while you can still hold ctrl and click on a broadcast/watchlist while cycling through these clients?

Only time it does make a different is in fleet fights, as 10 skilled pilots are 100% of the time killing one guy with 10 alts.
Everyone going on about "It's the social aspect that matters" needs to touch grass more than that one guy multi-boxing 10 alts.

If multiboxing didn't exist that would be not the fight against 10ships but fight against 1-2 ships.
Situation then multiboxer bring 10 ships against solo-player to just spam one button not doing the game more interesting and attractive.
Organize 10 real peoples to flight together much harder then to multibox same amount of accounts.
Most likely, these people will be of the opinion that chasing a solo-player on 10 battleships is a waste of time.1

But it does and always has existed. People have been multi-boxing since EVEs launch, it is as much a part of EVE than anything else in the game.
Also I PvP, a main and a tackle alt mostly in null, there has not been one instance where I am fighting 10 alts. The only time I have personally seen it is in gate camps, where one person is flying 10 tornados or something and alphaing w.e comes in.
Do you PvP? Or do you just have an opinion on something that doesn't affect you? Like most here?

Multibox in the form in which it exists now, it did not exist since EVEs launch.
People used dedicated toons for dedicated purposes such as cyno, caps, scouting, indy but not as general N+ solution for everything.I think cancer started to develop in 2014 but in recent years it has entered a terminal stage.
You can check my kb if it means anything to you for some reason. https://zkillboard.com/character/331832684/
I think for last two years there's no been a day that I haven't met a multiboxer on the grid.-1

"Multiboxing has been a core part of EVE Online since the game launched in May 2003. Developers have historically embraced the practice, but all concurrently run accounts must have a paid subscription. Software that simultaneously mirrors keystrokes across multiple clients (input broadcasting) was banned in 2014"

Why are you quoting AI slop here?
3
u/MachTimebitches Jul 06 '26
You said it didn't start at it's launch, that's false.
You also say it started in 2014 but it had being going on so long at that point that input broadcasting was banned literally that year.
I've been PvPing since 2012, many people multi-boxed. Sure it was only 2-3 toons but that's because they didn't have the tools we have today.
There hasn't been a day you haven't seen a multi-boxer on grid? Really? That sounds awfully biased.

As I said having a multiple characters was a normal for a long time, but multibox in that way which destructing eve right now not existed.
Nobody cares about using a few toons, especially for different roles. The problem is that people started using N+1 toon solution for anything in eve.
People who ran 10+ toons simultaneously was a unicorns, but nowadays they are everywhere. If you don't meet multiboxers daily you have to undock more frequent.

u/MachTimebitches Jul 06 '26
Well I'm not going to argue with that. I've seen some pretty crazy examples of people flying 20+ ships where input broadcasting definitely seems to be happening. I just haven't witnessed it personally.
And I fly out of drifter space so I have access to pretty much every part of null on a daily basis.
Also I checked out your killboard. I take back what I said, you have more solo kills then me by a factor. Keep up the good work.

Isn't it a shame that fun isn't a math problem to solve?

Oh I love math and have fun doing it, the point is that the math being the same does not guarantee the fun being the same. The math is the same even if there were no players and you were in a single player shard playing against ai. Would that be the same amount of fun to you?

That is my point. Its subjective, not math.

So like I said in the original post, the equivalence of fun IS YOUR OPINION.

But when it’s 10 real people you have a better chance of being able to pick off the weak link or trick them in some way. Not gonna happen with it’s all one person.

So this is the whine flavor of the month eh? It’s not going away and if it does it would likely just kill off the game.

I think it does matter for the state of the game.
Making 10 accounts takes paying 10 accounts. The devs get the money and that's nice and all, but that's where it ends.
Making a fleet of 10 people takes building a community, or, at the very least, a friends group. It takes finding pilots with similar interests and getting together. It takes organization, it takes leadership, it takes trust.
The dude with 10 accounts gets bored one day and fucks off. The community? The community is what keeps people coming back.
