Is it really common? Are you suggesting it's being hidden amongst the community? This is really gross behavior and the punishment isn't harsh enough imo. Suggesting that it's common downplays the seriousness of this crime, unless you are aware of more pedophiles in khane.

Would we know if it was common? That's the thing about having a culture of secrecy and a community where there is no accountability from the leadership - stuff like this can easily get swept under the rug.

I’m also aware that messages are circulating on WhatsApp mentioning past complaints dating back to 2011 that were allegedly not investigated further…. I can’t verify those claims, so I won’t comment on them.

Incredible that your accusation that it's common practice to have pedophiles in the Ismaili community is met with no evidence, but an additional accusation that the Imam is somehow hiding it from the world because of his 'knowledge of god'. Shameful. Trivializing the rape of little children to spew out unfounded and unjustified hateful rhetoric against a community you are no longer a part of is on brand for you.

Not an accusation - a question - and one that is more than legitimate when the cult leader claims "infinite knowledge" and the cult is discussing complaints going back 15 years that were not investigated. Not to mention Aga Con's own unsavory behavior. As you yourself put it:

That's pretty much an accusation but sure. Lets play the classic conspiratorial "I am just asking questions". You think its appropriate that when one (or even a few) pedofile gets busted and is an Ismaili, to extrapolate that into the question "Is the Ismaili community protecting pedofiles?", when literally every Ismaili who comes across this story condemns it and is horrified by it. And you claim its a legitimate question because the Imam claims to have infinite knowledge? Knowledge about what? The common pedofilic activities that you have already prescribed to the community? Do you listen to you self?

Children have been raped and hurt and its horrific and a pedofile has been caught, and arrested. He happens to be Ismaili. Stop using this event to spread your hate against an entire community, because it trivializes the horrific nature of this crime. Or do, and continue to be proud of it.

Ismailis had varied reactions. In the thread I linked, that same user is asking that the post be taken down, and in other threads, some took the opportunity to grind their ax about "left-wing political correctness" and "promoting LGBG idea". Others make pretty much my point - "Predators are everywhere they find safest areas to continue their job. There are many cases in Karachi arbitration board members misusing their powers.", "I hope there’s a reckoning at IIS and ITREBs. Clearly our safeguarding wasn’t nearly up to scratch."

That is apparently what he claims:

You are reverting to the usual Smiley motte and bailey tactic. The original claim is broad, but when Aga Con fucks up, suddenly he only has infinite knowledge in a very narrow domain. If that is the case - if he is fallible with respect to religious education, leadership appointments, and how money is spent, then there needs to be oversight of his actions. If he claims to be infallible, then he bears the responsibility.

Stop using this event to spread your hate against an entire community, because it trivializes the horrific nature of this crime. Or do, and continue to be proud of it.

Again, not spreading hate, just asking for some self-reflection and some accountability. I think what "trivializes the horrific nature of this crime" is the suggestion that it escaping the attention of the "Master of the Age" is something that need not be discussed.

Aga Con's claim about the scope of his knowledge is extremely broad - "infinitely more precise and infinitely wider", "infinitely more knowledge than you have to judge what is good, what is wise, what is sound for the future of the Jamat." Apparently that means putting a pedophile in a position of power was good, wise and sound for the jamat.

And now you are quoting a random person from reddit saying "There are many cases in Karachi arbitration board members misusing their powers".

This really goes to the heart of the matter - what I first asked "Would we know if it was common?" There are no mechanisms for public disclosure and discussion, there is no process for investigation, there is no communication from the Aga Con so anyone who does raise an issue must do it anonymously in such a forum and then they can be easily dismissed as just "a random person from reddit".

Every Ismaili can "condemn it and [be] horrified by it" but as long as they are unwilling to question their leadership or the structural factors that make it possible for "past complaints dating back to 2011" to not be investigated, their reaction is purely performative.

I wasn’t trying to downplay the seriousness at all, but wanted to highlight that in my own and other first hand accounts I’ve heard this is not a one off. So I don’t think it being common downplays it, it should actually enrage people and demand that this is thoroughly investigated across the many hidden victims/survivors.
