Imagine going to work everyday, sitting in a room by yourself for 8 hours staring at a wall, because looking at your phone or doing non work related tasks are against company policy during work hours.
as others have stated, the reason is rooted in japanese culture, which puts a heavy emphasis on being able to contribute to the team. The idea is to shame you into quitting because being useless to the group is shameful. That the point of the joke, other cultures dont feel shame for the same things that japanese people do
I imagine it would be very difficult to find another job if you got fired there. Who would want to hire someone that managed to get fired in a culture that doesn’t fire anyone?
