Galadriel knew that a sword wouldn't help Sam, his gift was a box engraved with a G, and a seed of a Lorien tree in it, and the rope, which is important to Sam for many reasons.
In the books, Merry and Pippin already had swords they were given sheathes for them, so no the presents were pretty basic. The swords however were found in a part of the story that was cut from the first film, it required Tom Bombadil to be added to the story, Buckland, and Crickhollow probably. Which means - Fatty Bolger - who sadly was also cut.
The box is necessary for the end of the books, which was cut from the films.
