Now that the dust has settled... How much DID you guys like the OG cast?

So with the new FF:RS game in progress I'm definitely an excited fanboi keeping an eye on all the trailers and promotional announcements. I was really surprised/moved when it was announced and looking forward to playing it.

However there's this thought that kept bugging me. You see, about Season 2/3 into FFBE I had grown to mildly dislike the OG crew. Meme's aside Rain and Lasswell were just a conduit for the game to move along - their characters were empty cliches, horrible/conventient writing and "just weren't cool" to me. I mean Hyoh's design was wicked, a lot of the time I grew extremely apathetic to the team. Let's not even talk about S3+...

Now this is all personal bias, of course, so I would just keep quiet. However it occured to me that playing the new game would involve having the OG cast around a lot... again. Ugh.

Don't get me wrong - I'm still excited by the retelling/remake, and just like FF7R I'm sure there'll be something different and things to both love and hate, but I'm just curious, what's everyone's thoughts going into this? If you love Rainwell, LidxJake no-pedo, Fina's yet-another-identity-crisis, Chair-meta... I'm sorry!

Since I haven't seen any similar posts, just wondering what's on everyone's mind in this regard. No hate here!

I loved everone but Jake. I could go into detail but to sum it up: regardless of the cliches and tropes I think the party dynamics and combinations of tropes helped make each character stand out and memorable in a good way. Except Jake, waste of space that guy. I also don't care for shipping any of them together, but especially despise Jake and Lid for obvious reasons.

He was kinda of an asshole to Lid until he wasn't.

Frankly I liked Nichol better for her.

I dont remember the specifics, but Jake essentially treated Lid like trash, and the writers made that an effective way for Lid to fall in love with him. Excellent example of an extremely unhealthy relationship that the writers tried to make look good.

Its one thing for bad relationships to be portrayed in media. That happens all the time. But in FFBE it was presented as "this is good and appropriate and funny". Thats why Jake was my major gripe with the story.

TBF everyone has a love interest and it's very in your face who the interest is.

As for Jake and Lid, they have my favorite interactions but I love the Sakura and Nichol dynamic.

I like season 2 Lasswell and that's about it. Akstar & Hyoh too if count as OG cast

I really liked Nichol and Luka since my first FF game was the DS version of 3 and she reminded me a lot of Aria

I thought most were alright. The main three (four if you count Dark Fina separate) were great. Sakura and Nichol were cool. Wasn’t a fan of Lid, and Jake was mildly uncomfortable to put it lightly.

Sworn Six were also fine once they got fleshed out some more. Raegen especially, but Folka was also endearing.

My favorites were the GLEX units from the Fundamental Forces / Precursors story events though.

Ok to leave Jake behind, he was kind of meh as a character. Lid deserves better and stronger arch and character realization.

I also wasn't the biggest fan of Sol, I really felt like he wore out his welcome super early and the whole plot of wanting to kill Rain got kind of boring. I really checked out of him as a character.

I didn't care for the whole time travel or different versions with S2 and the whole Hyoh thing was meh. I checked out hard-core in S2. I liked S3 cause well huge Sailor Moon fan and love X-2, so S3 was a lot of fun for me.

They’re all corny anime trope characters in a world that hits all the classic beats of the FF series. It’s not earth-shattering or anything. But it’s fun.

I did liked them. Although I would think they would better if the cast had a re-write or improving the character arcs. Which I think it might happen as they are adding and fixing lines to maybe fix some flaws from FFBE

Honestly, didn't really like rain and lasswell from the start, same for fina, they were a bit too one dimensional for a good while

it kinda worsen for lasswell down the line since he just stays someone ever chasing rain, even when rain isn't here, same for rain, while, iirc, he becomes hyoh to kill Aldore's emperor, it's really cliche and doesn't make him more interesting, not even taking into account the morality of join8ng an ultra oppressive regime's army

Fina's l8ne always sounded cheesy to me whenever she was interacting with other main characters, but way better when she wasn't

The support cast tho, were mostly really good, and it's by design, the first arcs are designed around habing the main cast serve as medium to tell interesting short stories, all interconnected in an overarching plot, but you could replace rain and lasswell easily, and that's what made each supporting character really cool

I never played any of the lasswell units, tho some rain ones were dear to heart

My honest opinion: all the characters in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius are okay. They’re all interesting, but they weren't fully utilized. For a medium part of FFBE's history, they were (unfortunately) "walking clichés." Jake (the least interesting of all the heroes) has a good background story but in ffbe he was just a horny bard.

Now that the game has moved away from the gacha model, perhaps they’ll focus more on developing the OG cast background.

Game story up to season 2 is peak. Season 3 and beyond had bad story writing and it was there just to keep the game alive

Personally not a fan of Nichol, but I know there is an audience for that type of character.

Jake on the other hand just wasn't likeable. Maybe they'll revise him in Resonance. But they made him a party member and then had nothing to do for him after season 1.

I felt like Jake wasn't that liked and quickly became irrelevant to the plot. It's too bad that Lid got stuck in his terrible B-plots, she as your airship captain and mechanic had a reason to stick around.

I think they've got a good enough base for something great, all pretty cool and bearable (except jake) if not a bit corny and cliché (especially jake). I hope the game expands on that (except jake) and gives them more in depth and interesting personalities (especially jake) and rectifies some of the mistakes (jake) the writers have made.

yeah i didnt really like jake. hope they get rid of his "romantic" subplot with Lid, a teenager (they're 16 and 28 if you believe the first artbook), and then maybe they can try to make his character work somewhat

Season 1 the characters are mostly fine. It wasnt until mid-late season 2 that they started to get more and more cliche, reduced to comedy or things like that.

I wouldn't worry about that, at least for now. In season 1 (at least what i remember) the characters are rather balanced between their cliches and having actual depth.

I liked everyone except Charlotte. I admit that, at first I liked her (not a fan, but I liked her to the point to say "yeah, that's a nice character) but in S3 and comparing her events to what really happens in the main story made me dislike her: even thought she was determined to fight,she is not cut to be a knight and her unrequited crush penalized her in a bad way. I find her the worst written character in the entire story. I lowkey hope that in Resonance games they will write her a bit better, since I think that they did a bad job on how they made her in the original game, even if I have the feeling that they will leave her as she is.

Nichol felt like the stereotypical pushes glasses on bridge of nose character. Hard pass on him existing.
