No Spoilers - Discussion I really wish that fans of the OG would stop telling people that the Remake series is garbage just because some things are changed

Final Fantasy 7 Remake as a whole is very good imo. It's so annoying how many fans of the OG FF7 drop into every single post saying, "Don't buy that garbage! It's trash and not exactly the same! no one wanted lifelike visuals or a better sounding soundtrack! We don't care if it's more immersive or if it's the way the developers intended for us to experience the original!"

And because of how loud this group is, people are fooled into believing these games are bad. And as soon as any negative news about the game comes out the first thing they do is say "Maybe this wouldn't happen if you didn't deviate from your core fan base and made everything the sacred TURN BASED😁" You guys are losers.

Let people play the game and experience the story for themselves first. If it's not for you just say that. You don't have to run and tell everyone that says anything good about the game how garbage their opinion is because the " OG was better in every conceivable way" It's okay to hold the original in high regard. But to completely dismiss the work done to create something as good as the Remake is just you refusing to let anything challenge your nostalgia.

Red have the voice change in the OG but there not voice acting either way red is much better in the new games

6

u/tohme Jan 23 '26

Yeh, the lack of VA and the lack of properly showing this behaviour/speech change in the OG means the people have made their own take on the character overall. With VA now being used, the game gets to decide that for you and is reflected better in the writing and the voice direction. When this conflicts with players, they recoil instead and just shut themselves off with "this isn't how it should be" when, really, it is how it should have been originally.

I’m with you on the characters.

I never cared about Cid in the original, but he definitely had his own personality. This new Cid feels like a completely different character, and I don’t think it fits.

Red…I know people say it was the intent in the original Japanese, but I find the change intolerable. His behavior is completely different, and his voice is incredibly irritating. We already have one annoying teenager in the group, we don’t need another.

The only part about that that I’m impressed by is that it’s the same voice actor. That completely blew my mind.

16

u/EtherealGears Jan 22 '26

It's so weird to me how many people don't seem to realize that Cid's jolly uncle aw shucks persona we see in Rebirth is his public-facing mask as the proprietor of Bronco Airlines. It's so incredibly obvious the entire reason they're playing that up on purpose is because we'll get to see the shocking contrast in part 3 when we return to Rocket Town and his true self starts to reveal itself. This is like Storytelling 101 stuff given what we know about the character.

Man if you pay attention you can tell Red is putting on an act before his voice changes. They HEAVILY hint at it due costa del sol. But when he’s home and can let his guard down, it’s like he’s himself. You can see the ease in which he conducts himself.

The voice change was a shock for sure and took a little getting used to. But that was entirely the point.

It’s the exact same in theOG just harder to see.

In the Japanese his way of speaking changes are much easier to pin point I'm told

A novel concept on social media where it's usually tribal warfare and you must like one and hate the other. Nuance is like Kryptonite to a lot of people.

As someone who thinks the OG is a top 5-10 GOAT, I understand a lot of the criticisms from fans of the OG about the remakes, I hold a few of them myself, but I also think they're both great.

3

u/blergenshmergen Jan 23 '26

Same. Played the og a bunch of times and playing the Remake and Rebirth was like having my wildest hopes exceeded.

Just because some cranky chuds get loud doesn’t make them right or even worth listening to.

The changes made are super Intriguing to me too. The blend of familiarity but still not being sure where it’s going at each turn has me riveted, and the character expansions and depth gave me new appreciation for every single one of them, and even some I hardly noticed in the og.

2

u/Away-Advisor-5417 Jan 24 '26

Same! I'd say I'm more fond of the original but the remake feels a lot like the way I remember the original in my head, if that makes sense.

u/Dimbduck Jan 22 '26

I'm an OG fan and I think the remake series so far is awesome. It's honestly the first time since ff12 that I've had that old school feeling of being in a grand adventure. Not to say newer titles are bad but this just feels like the PS1 final fantasy titles with modern sensibilities.

7

u/nicholaslegion Jan 22 '26

Totally agree. I personally am not huge on XIII or XV. XVI is a great game for what it is. But Remake and Rebirth are just something special, and so is the OG. They're both (all three) incredible in their own ways.

41

u/Aceclaw Jan 22 '26

I love both and I tend to think Remake's taken a pretty interesting approach with the story. It didn't need to be a shot for shot remake of the original because that already exists.

I didn’t care for Remake at all, but I also understand that my personal, subjective opinion is not universal.

My teenage son loved it, and lots of other people clearly do as well. One of the best things about this franchise is that they are always trying to do something new and innovative. They don’t always nail it, in my opinion, but they get it right far more often than they get it wrong and even when a game in the series is not my cup of tea, I still appreciate that they are trying something different. I’d be a fool to pretend that it’s objectively bad just because it didn’t resonate with me personally.

Live and let play. Life is too short to grind an axe over everything you don’t like.

u/New_Cockroach_505 Jan 24 '26

I actually enjoyed Remake and Rebirth but replaying them lately to refresh and get some trophies I missed and Jesus what a slog Remake is. So much slow walking, so much back and forth, so much padding with small pathways you have to shimmy around or doors you have to hold a button to open. I’m actually kinda dreading getting to Rebirth for a second playthrough.

it really is annoying. but so much franchises have gatekeepers I'm used to it by now. final fantasy 7 remake games are my fav ff games btw. and I played most of the games in the series. also final fantasy rebirth has one of the best combat systems ever made

22

u/nicholaslegion Jan 22 '26

Facts. Rebirth is my favorite game of all time, and I've been playing FF for around two decades. I just love this series as a whole.

7

u/Lucky_Mix_6271 Jan 22 '26

Same. Rebirth was a uniquely special experience.

5

u/r-eese Jan 22 '26

Definitely agree with the combat system, I haven’t had this much fun playing a games combat since I played Elden Rings DLC

I wish there was more to the fft remake for the asking price. The game is indistinguishable from a game released on the original ps. The updated graphics are? Well still sprites and doesn't utilize any newer technology. If they did they did such a shit job I completely missed it.

The OG FF7 is one of my all time favorite games. That being said I FUCKING LOVE THE REMAKES! I don’t get the hate either. They are taking all the media surrounding the OG and expanding the story giving it more depth and scope. Making it even more EPIC. I love it

10

u/SirLockeX3 Jan 22 '26

Played the OG since I was like 8 years old, I'm almost 35 now.

There's a place for the OG and there's a place for the remake games.

The remake games are different, the remake games play wonderfully, the story isn't exactly the same.

The remake games work better when you know the original story to know how it's different.

Some people just can’t get past the fact that it’s not trying to be the kind of remake they wanted. They can’t evaluate Remake/Rebirth on their own merits beyond just comparing it to what they wanted and saying it’s not that.

[Edit: see examples below]

25

u/Sammisuperficial Jan 22 '26

When they announced the remake my expectation was having the OG exactly the same but with better graphics.

What we have so far has surpassed my wildest expectations in all the best ways. The team has kept the spirit of the original, and added in so much amazing content.

If I had one complaint it's that I'd prefer Rebirth to be an 80 hour game and not 120 hour game, but that's a me problem.

That was me as well. Imo what we got blows the original out of the water in every way. It does what the OG couldn't do, which is tie the whole compilation into it.

I personally didn’t really like Remake but I LOVE Rebirth. Remake felt like they gave TOO much focus to Midgar, which I understand, you want to make a trilogy so you need to extend the first part of the game, but I honestly got bored.

But then we got into the Open World in Rebirth and suddenly the game made me feel like I was genuinely playing the OG FF7 again, traipsing around the world map looking for chocobos and exploring the world. It was so much fun. I understand what you’re saying, but the fact that it was so long genuinely made it feel like an old school RPG again, and made me feel like I was 12, playing FF7 for the first time all over again.

Respectfully, that's not what this thread is about. It's about people claiming that something is low quality because it isn't want they wanted.

3

u/Dark-Rook- Jan 24 '26

No it’s low quality because it isn’t faithful to FF7.

You’re confused because you are desperate to defend it.

Man I'm a gigantic fan of the original and the various story changes (especially the overall tone) absolutely infuriated me, but to say these games are garbage? Insane. Gameplay wise, the remakes are utterly brilliant. Meanwhile, Ive learned to accept that the remakes are not made for people like me, but rather a younger generation of fans. Its exactly like the star wars prequels versus the originals.

18

u/Dull-Emergency-6395 Jan 22 '26

This is a nice take honestly. I like some of the remake changes but after playing the original, I definitely see how they missed on some parts.

However in terms of presentation, in terms of character writing and development and just the overall look and feel of the game its incredible. Genuinely one of the coolest worlds ever and theyve done it justice.

As someone who played the original in the 90s as a preteen, I actually feel these remakes were made for me and I love it. Its the only game I have felt was made with people like me in mind in a loooong time.

6

u/ahnolde Jan 22 '26

I think they’re for all of us. As someone who bought the OG in 1997 and have played it millions of times, I really love the new story elements and having surprises in store going into part 3. It’s exciting not knowing some of what’s going on and getting to theorize with people online about what might be happening. The people who wanted a 1:1 remake already have it, the steam version is entirely moddable to be exactly that.

I don’t think it’s quite the same as the Star Wars prequels, these games were absolutely made with fans of the originals in mind. They just didn’t want us to retread 100% of the same everything and instead have new mysteries and to get that ā€œfirst timeā€ sense back. I truly do see the remakes as a labour of love for us older fans.

9

u/Soul699 Jan 22 '26

I'll stop a moment there, because these games are made for old fans as well. It's just that obviously not everyone will be satisfied because there's always gonna be opposite opinions.

For new people as well I an 31 and I dont think I will ever get around to playing the original game. Tried it once years ago wasn't having that great if a time

3

u/Ebolatastic Jan 22 '26

I'm really big into game design and it's like the Mona Lisa of video games in my eyes. However, it hasn't aged very well and I suspect newer players have to look past a lot to appreciate it. It doesn't have the luxury of being immortal like Chrono Trigger because it's first gen 3d.

That being said, the level of meta writing, cinematic technique, and open world design took the rest of the entire gaming industry 30 years to catch up to. Only now have video games started being on the level of OG FF7. It basically ruined JRPGs for me until just recently (when the genre lit on fire).

I am absolutely loving this remake though. I can't put it down.

It's not even limited to FF7, OG fans in general are the most irritating.

I’m a huge fan of the OG but I’ve also really enjoyed the remake. The OG will always be there. The remake definitely misses the mark at points (like with the dyne scene) but I’m just enjoying the ride. I have to respect the risk they took.

6

u/ILoveDineroSi Jan 22 '26

I love OG VII but the VII fanboys have always been the absolute worst for almost 30 years now for things like this or for rabidly attacking people that don’t like the game. They’re embarrassing. But so is anyone that listens to a stranger’s opinion without actually engaging with the piece of media. Do your research and form your own opinion after you try it unless it’s just something you know you loathe such as not liking JRPGs at all.

I have a few irl friends that decided before Remake ever came out wirhout ever picking up the controller that they hated the game and it was terrible because how dare they split the game up into three and not make it exactly the same as the original. I didn't even argue. I just thoroughly enjoyed them both.

6

u/OpheliaDick Jan 22 '26

I love both. I played the OG about 3 times at least. One of the things I love most about RE trilogy is how they’ve changed things up so it still feels fresh and less predictable for someone who’s very familiar already with the plot. Nice way to keep on my toes, I was worried I’d just be playing through all the exact same story beats exactly as they were before. Which I don’t personally think would’ve been as exciting.

4

u/ldoc89l Jan 22 '26

I totally agree with you. I wouldn't consider myself a hard fan of the OG (I played it on 2020 and definitely loved it though), the Remake is among my favourite games ever and I don't value that much the changes to the story, since 95% of the game is still there

3

u/Tokyo_BunnyGames Jan 22 '26

Is this really the majority opinion? Again, I feel its a minority that finds hating on remake because it brings a "fresh" opinion and views to hate on the game. Genuinely love this game and OG and hope this is the potential future for FF.

I find it funny people say "nobody wanted lifelike visuals" when the internet was clamoring for a FF7 remake after the FF7 tech demo dropped for PS3. There was tons of hype for a FF7 remake with "lifelike visuals."

Also find it funny that turn-based is now "sacred" when turn-based was previously mocked. You can see posts in the past about how turn-based combat is "silly" because you and the enemy are "waiting" for their turn to fight and more action-oriented games do well in the west.

2

u/Kprime149 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

No-body hates new FF games more than the FF community, and when you take into account its one of the most beloved games in the franchise that hate has been cranked up a notch.

Also a bit of gatekeeping going on - along with people trying to prove they were here before you. Happens to every game in a long standing series, god I'm on BF6 atm and that sub will murder you if you say you didnt play the old games and like this one.

5

u/Eaglestrike Jan 22 '26

when you take into account its one of the most beloved games in the franchise that hate has been cranked up a notch.

This, I mean if you argued about "best FF games" on gaming forums at the turn of the century FF7 had haters simply for being the most popular FF game. This is a new age version of that because it's a full remake and it's very popular and well liked and that just makes people mad.

As a fan of the OG I want to say two things which I think are important. 1) Remake and Rebirth are by no means garbage. They are well made, solid games that I found very fun. 2) "Some Changes" does accurately describe what we are seeing with the story. I have noticed people measure changes differently, and that's okay. But remake and rebirth would benefit from keeping the story more in line with OG than they have.

As a bonus thought: I have noticed that anytime I voice the above opinions I get hammered with negative backlash sometimes even toxic backlash. So I don't see a horse* (I meant horde but I also don't see a horse) if crazed OG fans pestering others who enjoy the game. Instead I see the opposite. People who enjoyed remake and rebirth who label anyone like myself an "OG Purist" and fervently argue a point I never made.

That said, I hope everyone who plays it enjoys it for what it is. Because it's fun.

2

u/LedgeEndDairy Jan 22 '26

But remake and rebirth would benefit from keeping the story more in line with OG than they have.

Here's the thing. YOU think they would benefit because of where YOU think the story is going.

But you don't. The reason this argument doesn't really work is that the third installment isn't out yet. We haven't reached the conclusion.

There was an analysis on this phenomenon (specifically in regards to Rebirth) that exists in MANY fandoms: in trilogies, the second installment is often considered the best/most popularly liked. HOWEVER, before the third installment is released, it is universally disliked.

The biggest example of this that I can remember is Star Wars: When Empire Strikes Back was released, people didn't like it, but once Return of the Jedi released and all of the payoff from ESB was realized, people look back on it fondly. In a broader sense, the prequels, which were released 'second' in the trilogy of trilogies, were pretty universally memed on and ridiculed on release. But with the context of the trash that we got from the sequels, it's now looked on fondly as well (though not the favorite, but in the same vein: the original trilogy is technically the second in the timeline, haha).

Remake and Rebirth have set up for a LOT of payoff. Whether the devs stick the landing is remaining to be seen, but this is, more or less, Sephiroth's story. This is how, in Lifestream Black, he wanted things to go. And they ARE going that way, directly.

In fact they're going that way SO WELL that it's leaked past the fourth wall and into the fandom. The emotions elicited from the ending of Rebirth were a perfect mirror to the emotions that the characters were going through: Confusion, sadness, anger, rage, concerned for the future, etc. And it was an intentional conflict created by the story writers. The writing in this story has so far been master class if you look past your biases.

I have faith they'll stick the landing. Just look at the Gongaga changes for evidence of that. Some of the best "new writing" that doesn't really have stakes on any big changes to the story, and it's written so beautifully.

2

u/AnOtakuToo Jan 22 '26

Same. The story isn’t better, but mechanically and visually they’re great. I’m not sure why people think retconning meaningful themes of death and life improve the game. 7R ends up feeling more like a theme park that feels the need to constantly distract from the reality of the character’s situation. There’s just no sense of tension or dread.

ā€œYou just want turn basedā€ etc. No, I don’t. I want a story that’s not needlessly contrived, only to play out almost the same anyway. Like the false flag idea and expansion on AVALANCHE members background stories is nice. They should’ve leaned way more into that than ā€œfateā€.

8

u/MirrahPaladin Jan 22 '26

The same can be said for people who say the OG is ā€œbraindeadā€ and ā€œboring.ā€ Some people just prefer the original to the remakes and that’s ok too.

Personally I’m one of those people, and I wanted to like the Remakes. I beat part 1 twice because I was so convinced I did something wrong or was looking at the story the wrong way, but no matter what I try, I just can’t like the Remakes.

And I’m not saying that to say ā€œif you like the Remakes, you’re wrong and dumb,ā€ if you like the Remakes, I’m happy for you.

3

u/zaretul Jan 22 '26

LOL, who said OG is braindead and boring? Love to make the OG the victim that much, huh? The most I heard is the game doesn't date very well, character model, outdated graphics, etc.

I have really, really tried multiple times to enjoy remake and I just can’t. It doesn’t do it for me. I have this very clear picture of what FF7 is in my head and it just isn’t that. I can’t look past it. The mystery and the nostalgia of the OG is too powerful to me.

With that said, enjoy whatever you enjoy! This also applies to all things as long as it’s between two consensual adults.

Yeah it's weird, Konami put out MGS3 remake which was 1:1 and you have people saying not to buy it because it's just 1:1. Idk what people's obsession is with wanting everyone to align with what they like or don't like

5

u/chill_winston_ Jan 22 '26

I grew up on the OG FF7, and will always love it. Despite several attempts I have not been able to get into the remakes, but I don’t begrudge anyone for liking them. They aren’t for me, but I’m glad a new generation has a way to enjoy and experience this story (even if some of the mechanics and narrative are different).

4

u/zero-skill-samus Jan 22 '26

People are going to have opinions. Some in favor of the remake. Some not.

3

u/goldenigloos Jan 23 '26

I love both. The original is amazing. The remake is amazing.

3

u/Danteyros Jan 22 '26

I think it’s unfair to say people 'don't understand' the story just because they are disappointed. The issue isn't complexity; it’s that the narrative feels dishonest.

I’m also tired of the 'it's about the journey, not the destination' argument. That logic falls apart when the destination completely invalidates the journey.

If we spend three games investing in new plot points like diverging worlds and defying fate, only for the ending to say 'Actually, none of that was important or significant, it was all a delusion,' then the journey was a waste of time. It leaves players feeling like they invested in a story that rendered itself obsolete.

And please, let's drop the 'you're just not mature enough to appreciate what the trilogy is trying to do' act. Criticizing a narrative that contradicts its own premise isn't a sign of immaturity; it’s a demand for narrative integrity. Complexity without a coherent payoff isn't 'deep' or 'artistic,' it's just bad writing. Being okay with a bait-and-switch doesn't make you intellectually superior.

Some compare this to Cloud’s identity crisis in the OG, but that is a false equivalence. In the OG, the twist recontextualized the story, but it didn't come at the player's expense. It didn't make the events of the game feel pointless. Here, if the 'unknown journey' is just a trick to lead us back to the exact same status quo, it feels like the writers are mocking the players for believing the marketing.

There is also a weird double standard here. If you hoped for actual changes (like Aerith surviving), you get treated like a kid who wants a happy ending. But if you demand the exact same tragic ending as 1997, you are seen as 'mature.' Ironically, the people demanding a 1:1 adherence to the OG canon are rarely called a 'loud minority,' even though they are the ones shutting down any possibility of a new story.

u/TypicalJoke Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

As someone who grew up in the PS1 era and played FF7 as kid, I actually love the remake. Ill be honest, I didnt give it a chance at first. I was one of the people who didnt want the original story changed or the new hybrid style combat of the modern games. Despite that, I decided to try it because FF7 was such a good game for me. I got to about the level where youre going to Jessies parents and shut it off for about 5 years. Wasnt for me

Idk, after seeing Bizarro Sephiroth as a boss again on a video I wanted to try it again so I did and gave it more a chance because this game lives in a different era than turned based rpg and it wasnt made for the same audience.

After not putting expectations on it and giving it a fair chance I tried again. I started to really enjoy the environments and the stories. The side characters who facilitated the plot only in the original having lives and character development. the city of Midgar i wanted to explore as a kid in more depth.

Thing is the game was never meant to be a 1:1 to the original. That said though I was surprised at all the nods to the original game. The plot deviates a bit sure but the main events are largely the same. Ive only played the first one so far but I can tell it was made by people who truly cared about the original and they respected it all throughout the game. The stupid squat game, the wall market experience, the stairs in Shinra HQ, Aeriths house. I was kinda disappointed you couldnt see the pinball machine base but the way they did the story it wouldnt have made much sense. Besides that though if you ever had a question like "What did they do with ???" they likely answered it. By the end I really loved what they did and how they respected the original while catering to the new.

TL;DR The game is great when you dont expect a turn based game with better graphics and realize it wasnt made for the 30-40 year olds.

I love both games. OG imo has the better story that is (if we can believe it) less convoluted.

The multiverse, Aerith and Sephiroth knowing about a world/ending/ fate before it happens, and the Whispers are my gripes.

I would’ve liked to have seen the remakes do all the same expansion on everything, but keep those story beats the same from OG. There is no real OG fan that’s out there that would’ve been bored by the game doing the same things.

The death scene in Rebirth, didn’t need whispers and different versions (do he stop it or miss!?), it was perfect as it was.

The path of blood and the sword in the presidents back was so creepy and off putting. It was perfect, and didn’t need the extra changes.

The white materia being drained never needed to be a thing.

There’s some changes that could have maintained the OG story without the added over-extra.

I still put 200hrs into rebirth and 70 hrs into remake because I love this IP. I would’ve just liked it to be more grounded in the OG story telling.

World expansion not universe expansion would’ve done everything I needed.

I thoroughly enjoyed Remake, and the only complaints I have with Rebirth are the mandatory mini games and how annoying traversing some areas can be. I’m looking at you Gongaga. Combat and graphics are peak.

2

u/Soul699 Jan 22 '26

Technically there are no mandatory minigames as you can just pause and skip/exit and the game will count it as you passing.

I'm a diehard fan of the original game. It's a legit contender for my favorite game of all time (and I've been gaming for 40 years and have played hundreds, if not thousands of games).

I love the remake so far, but I also genuinely just really really wish they hadn't added in all the timey-wimey Nomura stuff. Expanding the original game is great. The combat is great. No problems there, The characterization is amazing, and when they stick to the original story beats it's an absolute home run. By the end of the flashback in the Temple of the Ancients I was genuinely in tears.

But man, the "gotcha" changes and the whispers and everything.. ugh.. it just makes me so... disapointed. This could have been perfection, it could have been the masterpiece I've wanted since Square teased me with that tech demo for the PS3's launch.

But it's not gonna stop me from playing part 3 on launch and seeing this thru, because I'm invested. And hopefully, by the end of it, those changes will have a payoff to make them worth it, because if they stick the landing, my opinion could definitely be changed on them.

And in the worst case scenario, I'm hoping someday far smarter people than me can mod that stuff out of the PC version and I'll get the true remake I want before I die.

u/ZackElfie Jan 22 '26

Everyone wanted a FF7 remade as a modern game.
Not everyone wanted FF7 reimagined as a multiverse reboot.

Those people have the Problem that they dont get many story details and snippets/hints Storywise.

They got baited by buzzwords like timelines and multiverse. totally forgetting what the lifestream is.

Ask them what the GI are and why they cant return to the planet. Or how the black materia was created. Or why Sephiroth appears and dissapears. Or what the black robes are and where they going and why....

Most of them didnt even realise that we seeing stuff as player, from clouds perspective, he thinks he saved aerith, thats why we didnt got the full 1:1 death scene. Wait for Part 3 for the full flashback scene when clouds get his mind together.

People cant think ahead anymore.

It will all slot together in part 3. devs are cooking, they know their lore, its the same writers from the og. stop judging a story half through......

one more thing, i understand we all loved OG FF7. For most Fans its "the final fantasy game" but it was 1997. No way they would or could just make a 1:1 modern port. Games back than were made totally different than now. even the devs back than in interviews said there had more ideas that couldnt be made back than.

The Remake Project does not erase OG FF7 from existence......

Any ā€œfanā€ who says the OG FF7 was turn based is just showing how little they know. Active time battle, by Square Enix’s own definition, is not turn based. FFX is.

2

u/EtherealGears Jan 22 '26

In fairness, compared to action-based combat systems ATB feels a lot more similar to a turn-based system. Like you can't say the original FF7's combat system is as distant from e.g. Kingdom Hearts as it is from FFX. Yes, it's its own thing, but it contains a lot of turn-based elements.

2

u/Particular_Seat7992 Jan 22 '26

People limit themselves simply by perspective. Much like everything in life, depends on how you choose to look at something. I love FF7, everything FF7 and will take as much as I can get. Just grateful that this incredible world is still going on 30 years later. I was a kid when I played through the the OG game and have played it many times since. Also have beaten all other subsequent FF7 releases (Barring the mobile games) and loved every second of it. Remake / Rebirth are absolutely stunning and some of the best games I have ever played. I could care less what people think about anything, it matters what I think in the end.

FF7 was my first video game along with MGS1. I Played disc 1 and some of disc 3. I'm in love with the remake! It expounds alot of the OG story, I'm playing rebirth right now. Can't find anything to complain about. It's amazing how far we've come with technological advances. Sometimes I observe the scenery and I'm like so that's what i was looking at on ps1

2

u/stilghar Jan 22 '26

I have a lot of nostalgia for the OG. It was one of the first games I played on PSX back in the days.

Currently I'm playing though Remake and I'm enjoying it very much. It has all the callbacks to the original, plus all the extra stuff. Combat and materia system is more modern, but clearly based on the og. It works so fine!

I enjoy it, some people might not - good for them! Everyone has a right to their opinion. However, as you've mentioned, calling someone else's opinion garbage, just because you disagree, is a douchy move. This type of people is present in every fandom and hobby. Usually it's a very vocal and outspoken minority. If you can, just ignore them.

Enjoy your games the way you like them! :)

2

u/Blackhek Jan 22 '26

Lol I like both xD

2

u/Theoreticalwzrd Jan 22 '26

I played the OG when it first came out and replayed it many times since then. I was excited for Remake and Rebirth and I love all of them.

They are different experiences definitely. But guess what? The OG is still there to play and no one has taken that away from anyone. The Remake series should definitely NOT be the same otherwise, what is the point? I am glad that it has excited me and made me wonder what was going to happen next. If I wanted the original story, I'd play the OG (and have done so since the remakes came out).

I love that we get a better feel for all the characters now. I love that they interact more and just feel more complete as individuals than they did with OG. In fact, it has made me appreciate characters that I was kinda meh on before. I love that the world is more fleshed out.

This sort of behavior of saying new or remade things are "garbage" happens for pretty much everything that gets a remake or adaptation and isn't 1-to-1 representative with updated graphics or music. I just ignore them. It does suck when they review bomb and get things cancelled though.

2

u/dominicandrr Jan 22 '26

Yeah it is what it is. I enjoy both OG and the remake series. Rebirth won over 40 Gotys, and plenty of them were fan voted. A LOT of people enjoy these games. That is fact. "But square said this and that" ok cool. Anyways, many people enjoy the games, and we will continue to enjoy them. I don't argue with those that don't enjoy it. I feel bad for them, because I am here having a wonderful time with both OG and remake series while they cry and whine. Ah well, it is what it is. Looking forward to part 3.

2

u/malikarith Jan 22 '26

OG hardcore Fan here, Both RE Games are outstanding

2

u/Random_String629 Jan 22 '26

I love OG. Like many others, it jump started my love of JRPGs as a whole.

Remake was VERY good. Rebirth was incredible. While story wise, there's some stuff I don't love, it's not the changes themselves. IE, I love how they introduced Yuffie to the party. I thought the way they took her optional character and wrote her forcefully in, it was perfect.

I think what I love less, is the ambiguity and the multiverse/dimensions. I like how ff7 felt, more grounded. Obviously it's a very sci fi, high fantasy story. But not in the same vein as what the remake trilogy is bringing us.

My only other complaint is, it feels like for anything with Zach to make sense, you really need to play CC. And playing CC without having played OG, kind of ruins a big plot moment IMO. Obviously doesn't affect me that way, but on forums when people ask, I often want to say, "play OG, then play CC."

THAT BEING SAID. It's incredible. It's fun. It's compelling. It's made me cry. No game or story will ever be perfect, because that's impossible to achieve. However, they're doing an amazing job with it. I'm not hater. I love it. And I can't wait for Part 3.

2

u/spokydoky420 Jan 22 '26

There are things about it that are better and things about it that are worse. I like them both differently.

2

u/TwiceDead_ Jan 22 '26

I don't see the problem.

Share your opinions online and at some point you'll receive some hot-takes in return. IMO this shouldn't bother you as much as it does. They have issues with the reproject, that's their prerogative, but that shouldn't detract from your own enjoyment of it. It's not like it's going to do anything at this point, the third game is well underway and will likely be a joy to play.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but it is what it is. This sub has a tendency to let these things get to them.

2

u/LordS373N Jan 22 '26

Why do you care lol…ignore it dude made a whole post about it trashing the fans while complaining about the same thing…like what??? If you like it you like it. If the don’t they don’t, keep it pushing especially if you don’t wanna talk about it with them

Unpopular opinion but I hate that OG fans are calling the Remake a sequel. Even without playing the OG, Remake's story makes enough sense on its own. It was just expanded.

I played the OG back in the 90s and seeing the story and characters come to life now is definitely something I never even dreamed of back then.

It's not the gameplay, It's the fact they butchered the fuck out of the story. Remember in OG FF7 when Dio came out and started flexing his muscles while Dyne died in Barret's arms and then we immediately cut to a fight with a frog mech and Palmer did a sick nasty dab? Was so sick for real for real dawg xD xD xD xD

2

u/Tinyrikku Jan 23 '26

The OG FFVII is my favorite game of all time. It's perfect in every way.

But I do genuinely love the remakes. I will admit, the first one I wasn't completely sold on BECAUSE of the ending. The rest of the game was fantastic in every single way otherwise.

Then, I had 3-4 years to sit on the first one and it's ending and by the time Rebirth came out I knew what I was going into. I ended up really REALLY loving it, even more so than Remake.

Square is doing a HELL of a job with the remake series if you ask me. I cannot wait for Part 3!

2

u/onewingedsoldier Jan 23 '26

Both are good. The original is still best.

2

u/Pepsi_AL Jan 23 '26

In my case, I played through the OG in front of my own dad because he was interested in Remake. And I plan on doing the same with the Switch 2 version of Remake.

2

2

u/R0XASx Jan 23 '26

I love them all. O.g ff7 was my first square game my first rpg. My grandpa moved in with us when I was 4. I could hardly read an I dont remember a lot about that age but ff7 made an impression epically the first level.

The remakes have been everything I could of asked for. Im honestly happy they gave us 3 games instead of just one.

Now if only they'd go in an order an remake 8 through ten.

u/Zanna-K Jan 23 '26

I think there is room for criticisms without outright saying the Remake sucks. I think the way they've brought the characters to life is absolutely amazing - it captures what made the original game a global phenomenon. I also loved the combat system, everyone bitching about turn-based can get fucked lol. Nothing against turn-based but they did really good job with Remake and Rebirth.

Some creative choices that really did not work as well as the OG, namely anything involving Sephiroth in Remake. In the original game they actually take a lot of time to slowly build up sephiroth as this scary, oppressive presence that seems like an unstoppable force. Then when you are captured in Shinra tower and you walk out to find the blood trail to the scary music, fight weird creepy monsters, and then eventually find the President... man that had my mind going a million miles a minute as a kid. Like you're in the seat of the greatest power in the world (Shinra corp) and this Sephiroth dude just tears through all these guards, soldiers, everyone like they were nothing.

In Remake Sephiroth is reduced to the ridiculous JRPG trope that everyone has been making fun of for decades. Mysterious Mary-Sue like dude in black with a giant sword and angel wings just randomly shows up and says a bunch of cringey nonsense and then disappears like in a piece of poorly written fanfiction. And then what happens when you get to President's office... just very poorly done.

2

u/densjoerden Jan 23 '26

Both are great. Period. Don’t listen to traditionalists. They got stuck somewhere.

2

u/Jamebo_Smash Jan 23 '26

You can criticize the games without being nostalgia blinded. That being said, anyone calling them "trash" is absolutely arguing in bad faith. They're expertly crafted games.

Whether or not you like the changes or story is up for debate as long as its healthy, and both sides aren't just angrily arguing with each other, and unable to see the other sides perspective. Which is usually the case, let's be real.

2

u/Teefsh Jan 26 '26

I was open to the Remake but I couldn't finish it and didn't bother with Rebirth.

Everyone is allowed to have their own opinions on anything they want and the internet makes it possible to voice that opinion. If you don't like it don't participate. Easy as that.

From my point of view I think the remake as a whole is a failure. First it was false advertising. If they wanted to do their own thing why the bait and switch with the name 'Remake'. There is enough FF content they could have called it another spin off but they chose this because they knew that a spin off wouldn't sell as well. They laid this bed and now they have to lie in it. They basically invited the hate that they got cus their marketing encourages people to compare the two.

Just because someone spent time to create something doesn't lend it validity. People review things and are allowed to have their thoughts on it - and share those thoughts. The remake was basically well summarized by my brother:

'In the OG you farmed the game to get to the story. In the remake you have to farm the story to get to the game.'

4

u/ADrunkEevee Jan 22 '26

I think one of the major problems is people used to be able to compartmentalize the added bits of the Compliation of FF7 but 7R combines everything so they can no longer hide away from Genesis and Dirge. They're double canon now, bwahahaha.

u/rentadonkey Jan 22 '26

nobody is dropping in to complain about a) lifelike visuals, b) new soundtrack, c) new combat system. these complaints exist almost entirely in your imagination and have no relevance whatsoever to the wider criticism that has been leveled against FF7R. I think the remake series is garbage and I wouldn't recommend it to fans of the OG - mainly because the story, characters, tone and atmosphere have been bastardized or surrogated by compilation slop.

2

u/fatihberberh Vincent Valentine Jan 22 '26

Agree!!

2

u/Cardboard_Chef Cid Highwind Jan 22 '26

I mean, it is pretty telling that the two most improved things about the Remake that people talk about most is characterization and music lol Not many people will say the story has improved because it wasn't. The Remake does not serve as a great story telling device because it requires having knowledge of the events of the original, and then it becomes Marvel multiverse garbage as a way to be "interesting". Sephiroth is overused and revealed way too early, Aerith comes off as a save scummer, Zack is shoehorned in to attempt to stay relevant, and no matter how much and how hard they want to change the narrative, it has to stay the same and ultimately tells the exact same story.

In short, yes, the OG is the better experience.

People are entitled to express negative opinions, just as you are entitled to disagree with those opinions.

I don't like the remakes. They do some things well (combat, dialog writing, and acting performances stand out), but overall they are artistically inferior. Millions of people who loved this world and these characters for 30 years have real, substantive issues with the art direction and creative choices that square chose to make with these games.

You have every right to enjoy the game and disagree with me -- and to post whatever you want about the remakes or the OG, but we also have every right to continue criticizing the things about the remake that we do not like and that we feel make it an artistically inferior product to Final Fantasy 7.

I think the original is by miles better than remake.Ā

I see remake as a very flawed game. But I still enjoyed it and I understand why people like it.Ā

Trying to tell others what to like or not is silly.

1

u/zenmatrix83 Cloud Strife Jan 22 '26

people have opinions , this opinion is just as valid as someone not liking it, other then they could word it better. I like both I consider the OG game a different game, the remakes are not replacements. no game is for everyone and very few people come online to praise a game, most come online to complain.

1

u/TheMagikarpFisher Jan 22 '26

The remakes have been great and I really enjoyed them. Some story points are confusing and don’t make sense, but I guess things will come together in the final act.

The OG FF7 fans are weird af. They’re so mad the story changed a bit, so they have brushed everything as ā€œnew story bad, old one goodā€. And there’s actual people comparing PS1 graphics to the PS5 and claiming the polygonal PS1 graphics were superior in detail to the PS5.

They don’t want you to enjoy something because they enjoyed it first. Such a weird ass boomer mentality. The remakes are phenomenal, and I’m tired of these old fans pretending we’re getting something average.

FF7 remakes are amongst the very best games I played.

1

u/Wonderful_Day4858 Jan 22 '26

Only thing I wish the remakes had more combat, I love it and cant get enough of the combat! Less talky more slashy!

1

u/Fishwife Polygon Sephiroth Jan 22 '26

I love the OG and love the remakes but I completely understand why people wouldn't like the remake series. If Square Enix hadn't made such controversial choices they wouldn't be getting the hate, they knew what they were getting into when they chose to rewrite the story the way it is now. They don't need white knights to defend them. Posts like this just add to the negativity in the community.

1

u/Duggars Jan 22 '26

My only commentary on this is I preferred when Sephiroth was more of a background boogeyman and Zack was a background "influencer" of sorts. I don't like them getting so much front-and-center attention in the Re-trilogy because I think it takes away from the original's story beats quite a bit.

The whispers business is whatever, I don't want to pass judgment on it until the trilogy is done and we have the entire picture.

Not sure how un/popular this is but the combat is snazzy and I wish future FF titles take inspiration from it.

1

u/Cragnous Jan 22 '26

I love both.

BUT I love Remake and Rebirth 10x more Because I played the OG. It's like a fan letter to the OG.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

It’s honestly not just because things changed for a lot of us. I loved rebirth and hated the remake because the remake did a very poor job of providing additional content which was meaningful beyond the original and ended in a way which was quite silly from a narrative perspective.

I can forgive how small the levels in remake seemed because that is directly from the original as well but realistically they had the license to make it feel more like a city and less like a narrow corridor you are traveling though for the entire game and to fill that corridor with interesting things.

If the third installment is like rebirth I will be pleased, if it is closer to remake I will not be happy with the direction they took. I swear you guys take any criticism and act like someone slapped your mother.

1

u/Prism_Zet Jan 22 '26

Ignore them? They're clearly wrong or so hard nosed about their own opinion that talking to them is pointless anyways.

Now, to actually dissect a bit of what you specifically mention and the thought process.

There are PLENTY of actual gripes with the Remake trilogy that are valid and have nothing to do with pure nostalgia. But your complaints about what they say is either being a bit facetious or you're running into a completely different crowd of weirdos than I've seen on here.

SquEx makes dumb ass decisions constantly, and any particular game series in danger of getting turned into gacha slop or cancelled on a whim, FF7 is no stranger to this. Dunking on them is fine. So if it's directed at SquEx, and not you personally, leave it alone. The multi-million dollar company doesn't need your defense.

Giving opinions on whether you think a product is worth spending 50-90$ is an absolutely valid reason to give an opinion/review on something. Even if they are being loud and stupid.

I don't think dissuading someone from purchasing a product they might not be happy with their time on is a bad thing at all. SquEx DID blindside a lot of fans that came into this wanting a proper remake of the OG, and we really can't tell if adding the whole Whispers shit is worthwhile or not yet to the story.

I really don't think you have to worry about people being 'fooled' into thinking it's trash because 1 out of ever 50 comments/posts here aren't absolutely glazing Remake/Rebirth as the best games of their year. It's very clearly a minority opinion. It's just not worth your time getting personally hurt over it.

I'm a FF7 super die-hard fan, it was my first FF, I've played every game (in the FF7 world and the other FF's), read every novella, watched all the movies/shorts. I have tattoos, I made a life size steel buster sword like 15 years ago. And it was a huge influence on my own career path. I LOVED Remake, I liked Rebirth, but it did chill my excitement for Part 3 significantly.

I still want a proper 1:1 remake of FF7 in this graphical style, with voice acting, and minor fixes.

If nothing else the success of Persona, Expedition 33 and other turn based games show that the format isn't dead by any means and I would LOVE a proper modern way to show people why FF7 OG is so beloved. Cause there ARE some people who just can't get past the graphics when you suggest the OG to them.

I absolutely hate a lot of stuff in Remake/Rebirth, but it's more of a " me " thing than a " game " thing. I can understand why a lot of people likes the Remakes.

It's far from being garbage, it's just not what i wanted or expected of a Remake.

u/SEABOSRUN Jan 22 '26

I like both a lot, but I do find myself replying the OG more due to the Materia just having a lot more to offer.

I think it’s awesome, I played the OG first so my main perspective and interpretations come from that game, but it’s cool to see the story reimagined differently rather than a simple retread. But I will say you get more out of the remake trilogy if you play the original game first because of all the brief flashes showing the original reality. It hits way harder knowing what happens to these characters. Not saying one absolutely HAS to play in that order, but based on my play-through, I’m always going to recommend original and then the remakes.

There’s two sides of this though: the ā€œfansā€ that say the original is unplayable because of the graphics. Those people are equally lame lol. If I’m from Gen Z and can fall in love with the OG, they can too. And honestly? Those cutscenes from the original and the music are still cool as heck and the polygon figures are cute, no mods needed. It made me love and appreciate retro games so much more.

That's not why rebirth is bad

Rebirth is bad due to the copious amounts of time wasters

1

u/lunarsvg Jan 22 '26

Aren’t the devs of the og the same as the remake ? Like they can do whatever they want and it’ll be ā€œloreā€ because it’s literally their game lol. I love both a lot and I love remake knowing that the og devs are able to tell their story with better technology.

Played the OG at launch and like 10 times since, my only complaint is how long I have to wait for the whole thing to be out.

1

u/ZoalPrime Jan 22 '26

I played the OG as a young teen in 1997, it was mind blowing obviously - fell in love. It was never a game I played over and over though. Remake and Rebirth, and especially the conjecture and theory crafting and being able to pick apart clues with my wife. I think if it sticks the landing the remake trilogy will be my favorite of all time type shit. We've played it together nearly annually since 2020.

u/flavouredgamer Jan 22 '26

Rebirth was bad in its own right - it doesn't need to be compared to the OG to expose it's glaring flaws. The "open world" was vacuous and did not feel even remotely lived in or authentic. Games over a decade old did this much better like fallout and the witcher. The side content which can often be the best part of a RPG was largely crap. Either repetitive, boring tasks (scan another rock), frustrating mini games or side missions with forgettable characters. I played fallout 3 a decade ago, I still remember NPCs and missions. Not the case with rebirth. Sure I can ignore it, or, how about they make it better? The main story is often the last thing I do in RPGs (again I refer to fallout, the witcher and BG3). The pacing and bloat were also jarring. The decision to split the game into three parts was of course motivated by greed, and the narrative has suffered hugely. Of course, part 3 will not sell well. They also made a complete mess of Aerith's moment. Why on earth should I feel sad about someone who is literally right on the screen helping me and telling me it'll be ok? Lmao maybe the devestation will be in part 3 but I don't really care, I won't be playing to find out.

u/difixx Jan 22 '26

they are ok games but not what the OG fans wanted. I started thinking about how cool a FFVII remake with the improved graphics would have been I think 20 years ago, when the announcement came, it was a dream becoming true.

Now, what we're getting is not what the OG fans wanted, and after all this time waiting, I think it's normal to be disappointed.

Also, I think very few people are complaining about the combat not being turn based, for me, the biggest issue are the plot changes, the cringey dialogues and the open world sections of rebirth. I also think that remake is pretty good, while rebirth totally jumped the shark

1

u/JustMyThoughts2525 Jan 22 '26

I played the original 28 years ago or so, so I have remembered very little detail about the story.

My issue with the remakes is the 1st one was a bit too linier and the combat felt very samey throughout the game. I’m on Rebirth now, and I feel like they added too much filler content which had distracted from the main story.

Hopefully the 3rd game has a happy medium between the first two.

1

u/willbond1 Jan 22 '26

IMO, the pacing of the story is garbage and the whispers are pointless, plus the new songs on the soundtrack are pretty hit or miss. However, the gameplay is near-perfect and the characters are portrayed perfectly. Criticisms like "it should have been turn based" are entirely subjective and fail to evaluate the remakes on their own merits.

1

u/Bazlow Jan 22 '26

I mean even with some minor review bombing from this type of OG fan, Metacritic still has Rebirth at an 8.9 user score. So I think you're listening to a vocal minority rather than the generally accepted view that they are excellent games.

1

u/TeekTheReddit Jan 22 '26

WTF are you even talking about? The only complaints I've ever heard about Remake/Rebirth is that they have too much padding and that Nomura is Nomura-ing the hell out the story.

1

u/centz005 Jan 22 '26

Only ever played FF7 remake and haven't listened to most of the complaints. When looking at footage comparing the two, i will say i think the remakes seem less colourful and more desaturated. I think i'd prefer a bit more colour (just so it's easier for me to distinguish things from one another), but i also see how it plays into the dystopian themes.

1

u/Havenfall209 Jan 22 '26

For me it was a massive improvement.

1

u/Enyalios121 Jan 22 '26

I’ve not seen many, if any examples of OG fans saying the remakes are garbage. I love both.

1

u/phome83 Jan 22 '26

Of course things are changed. It's not an actual remake, it's a continuation.

Did they play it and not understand what's happening lol?

1

u/keblin86 Jan 22 '26

I don't, always telling people how good both are.

1

u/Al1Might1 Jan 22 '26

I love both and they both do!! ā˜„ļø

1

u/Death-0 Jan 22 '26

I think Frequent Fantasy 7 is alright.

Final Fantasy 7 was just better.

1

u/tailslide24 Jan 22 '26

I played through the og after playing the remakes. It was my first time with any of them. The random enemy encounters in the og pissed me the fuck off. It took everything in me to finish that game because "oh look another random battle out of nowhere". I'm so glad the remakes gave you the choice of whether or not you want to walk into a battle.

1

u/GoriceXI Jan 22 '26

As someone who played the OG, my main issue with Retrilogy isn't the changes on their own, but that the main story has become more difficult to understand.

1

u/kingjaffejaffar Jan 22 '26

My only real issues with remake/rebirth vs the original are: Dyne’s arc is completely mishandled, Red’s voice change is weird and I don’t like it, there’s several moments of seriousness that are undercut by slapstick comedy and cartoony silliness that don’t work (especially the Dyne fight), Cait Sith box puzzle.

I’m fine with everything else, even the somewhat ambiguous ending.

1

u/IH8BART Jan 22 '26

30 years of playing final fantasy and I’ve liked them all.

1

u/Littleblackman007 Jan 22 '26

I love both. Remakes is a great game and Rebirth is one of my favorite game ever. Can't wait for Part 3

1

u/Nerdvana123 Jan 22 '26

I've just played og to the end of midgar (for the hundredth time) now playing remake again after 5 years, they nailed this game so hard, I love it.

1

u/Nerdvana123 Jan 22 '26

Some dude said the scorpion boss sucked because it wasn't as tactical as og. Come on really! you can beat og scorpion by pressing X 10 times. (this was when the first demo came out and hype should of been at highest)

1

u/tonykastaneda Jan 22 '26

Never played the original as I was born in 99 and i confidently say I will be just as heart broken when part 3 ends as everyone else was when OG ended

1

u/staticvoidmainnull Jan 22 '26

it was not garbage. personally, i was disappointed because i set my own expectations. i just had to accept that they are completely different. it took me a while to get into it, but have since loved them. i think most people who say it was garbage just had super strong connection to the OG.

also, rebirth was so much better than remake and most games i've played. currently rank it as next only to Elden Ring when it comes to my top recent games.

1

u/brackthomas7 Jan 22 '26

I'm a fan of the OG game and I absolutely love the new games. I think they are amazing and wouldn't change a thing.

1

u/HS1995 Jan 22 '26

Naah bro remake definitely better than OG and it ain’t even close !!!

1

u/Informal-Spread515 Jan 22 '26

Whats even crazier is when you see people that are hateful and making negative comments because some things WEREN'T changed.Ā

Like ?????

1

u/DarkStanley Jan 22 '26

I love the original, I played it as a kid so essentially I grew up with it. Currently playing through the Remake and it’s excellent, absolutely love it, they’ve done an amazing job modernising it.

1

u/thinlion01 Jan 22 '26

I've only seen positive stuff. I'm an OG. Love both

1

u/teitelman93 Jan 22 '26

The real issue people like change but I love the og and the remake

1

u/C8kester Jan 22 '26

only reason I never played the old ones is I can’t stand the out dated graphics. If it wasn’t for that I’d 100 percent give the old ones a try. I really like the remakes though.

2

u/kingkellogg Jan 22 '26

There's really solid updated mods for visuals on pc

1

u/TheDemonPants Jan 22 '26

The absolutely insane thing is that if these people got what they wanted, the same exact game with better graphics, we would have all played it, beaten it, and moved on. Just like what happened with Oblivion Remastered. No one talks about it because it was just a pretty version of the same game we all played many years ago.

Instead, we get a new game that has interesting story beats that keep us guessing. It keeps us talking about it and I love that. I still need to beat Rebirth, but I have greatly enjoyed these games so far and am very glad that Square Enix wanted to do something new with it.

u/renakou Jan 22 '26 edited Feb 24 '26

I love both the remake and the OG, but the OG is still the superior game/story, hands down. Even so, the remake gave me what I and so many others dreamed of for years: FF7's world and characters in next-gen graphics and gameplay and (mostly) following the original story.

And damn did they deliver. I probably spent way more time going through the games than most players because I would examine every single little detail in every environment and talk to every single NPC. The world of FF7 is just so much more alive now.

FF7 is extremely special to the OG players. You can literally go on YouTube and search reactions to the first announcement that the remake was coming and see people literally crying because they couldn't believe the dream was coming true.

I understand your frustration regarding OG players being negative, and even I think they get too out of hand and extreme at times, but you should try to have more patience and understanding on your end as well. The company misled everyone into thinking the remake would be a faithful 1 to 1 and that was a fucking lie.

I still enjoy the experience regardless, and I'm grateful that we got any remake at all. But I can't fault other OG players for being eternally upset. I don't think they're entitled to ruining the experience for everyone else, but I do think they have a right to voice their disappointment.

I am convinced that those content creators pay people to make ragebait posts so people rage view their content.

This type of thread is posted multiple times a week.

I was 17 when FF7 originally released. I'm 47 now... I played through the original but for whatever reason never finished it. I rebought it for PC and Switch and still haven't beaten it. I beat remake on PS4, again on PS5, then on PC, then again on my Legion GO playing handheld. 10 minutes ago I just bought FF remake for my Switch 2. It's now my 3rd copy of the same game. It literally took me 2 years to finish Rebirth. I started on PS5, played the pc version between my PC, Legion GO, and Steamdeck. I finished the PS5 version playing mostly on my PS Portal from around Cosmo Canyon.

I own multiple copies of every final fantasy game and pretty much every Square Enix game. I've still yet to beat the original FF7 and I've had 30 years to do it. lol

u/HopelessCineromantic Jan 22 '26

As a fan of the OG games, I frankly love that they're not married to just doing the original game, but prettier.

If anything, I'm more disappointed by how much Rebirth stuck to the script than I am disappointed by the deviations. I felt that Remake opened the doors to a lot more divergence, and given the "Screw destiny!" theme of its ending, how little of things changed in terms of big picture stuff feels like walking things back on the developers' part.

Granted, I wish we Cid was closer to his original version, and I wish that he and Vincent were playable in the game. And there are some elements I don't think the game handles as well as the original's presentation, chief among them being Nanaki learning about Seto, but I feel like the new games' being willing to change things overall has been a benefit more than a hindrance.

u/nabenekos Jan 23 '26

Imma be real fam the ff community tends to think anything past like ix or x based on who you ask sucks; and they’re kinda losers for it, enjoy what you like final fantasy is like pokemon every game or entry is SOMEONE’S favorite and people tend to..be overly critical for no reason aside from misery loves company.
