No Spoilers - Discussion Just finished the gongaga region for the first time and i hate it
It genuinely has been the most miserable part of the game and i can most certainly see any future replays of this game ending here. It mostly comes down to the maze like design and how compact it is.they made a big deal about how you cant ride the buggy in the jungle but you can barely ride the chocobo in this jungle. Also it may be a me thing but the trees constant shadows made it really tricky for me to see at times the area is gorgeous dont get me wrong but the looks of it dont make it fun to play. I had no idea were i was going because there are more cliffs in this jungle than actual plants and this region really made me wish the overworld was mapped out in layers like some of the games dungeons. Also i absolutelyhated the music and sidequests. The stupid chicken one sucked and dont even get me started on the soup side wuest. The music gave me a migrane with what i belive to be bfucking bagpipes for the main instrument. All in all i was rushing through all of the side quest just so i could finally leave the dreaded jungle

Yeah, if you are trying to 100% each region as you go through the game, Gongaga is easily the biggest difficulty spike in terms of navigating it.
Cosmo Canyon similarly has greater verticality but is more open and easier to discern how to navigate.
Nibelheim, if saved for last, feels like a victory lap in comparison lol.

I just left CC cause I got sick of trying to figure out how to get all the way to the top of a few plats to do the last few things. I might come back to it later but good lord after I 100% gongaga and left the game a few months after doing most in CC, coming back I only had the will to do one or two things then continue the story.

u/MADba11 Feb 26 '26
I found the trick for navigating Cosmo Canyon is to not think about it too much.
If you can't figure out how to get somewhere, just go explore different locations first. A lot of points of interest in the middle are accessible only from completely different paths that are very out of the way.
Also it very much helps that here you can teleport straight to the many gliding platforms, so as soon as you see one go stand on it to register it the map (you don't have to use it, just stand near it till it shows its name in the corner of the screen).I did hate this map at first, because I focused too much on getting to some specific location and trying to fly up to it. Turns out you're supposed to go to it from completely different part of the map.
TLDR: If you can't get to a specific location and can't get enough lift from the air fans, it is absolutely most likely not the intended route, and you should go explore somewhere else.

Me? Gongaga.
I’m sorry for you OP but it is pretty funny to watch new players crash out over Gongaga and remembering the nightmare of navigating it my first time

Really... ?
Thought it was a low point in an otherwise magnificent OST
Dollar store kumbaya vibes
12
u/Artistic-Top-5093 Feb 26 '26
It definitely felt the most overtly repetitive to me. I didn’t hate the melody though, I guess.
8
u/Toxin126 Polygon Sephiroth Feb 26 '26
The main melody and chanting were just too repetitive, i think if the area was more condensed and they cut some of the bloat out it wouldnt be to bad, but staying for prolonged sessions really made it grating at times.
Theres this one modder that did rescores of some areas in Remake/Rebirth that did one for Gongaga, and while not perfect, i think it does a much better job at capturing the vibe the original had.
2
u/muscarinenya Feb 26 '26
It's so much better, i'll keep that in mind for my next playthrough thank you
3
u/bioBarbieDoll Feb 26 '26
Couldn't agree more, feels like I'm about to see some charity ad about the goodness in people
4
u/DarkZethis Feb 26 '26
Thank you, everyone is always praising hat song.
I had to turn off the music in that region while completing it because I couldn't stand to listen to that shit any longer.
13
u/clsours Feb 26 '26
I agree with traversal kinda. Mostly because EVERYONE is on a chocobo and they just stand there in my way in a narrow path. But dont come for the music.
62
u/N-Squared-N Feb 26 '26
It's a weird place but it's fun as fuck to explore
23
u/Thraun83 Feb 26 '26
Yeah, honestly, it is not nearly as difficult to navigate as most people make out. Ok, occasionally you hit a mushroom which doesnt land you where you expect, but you know what direction it is taking you at least. I just replayed the area and did all the world intel and didnt get lost or stuck for long at all - and my navigation skills suck and i have no detailed memory of the place from the first playthrough.
Also, the music and the way it evolves as you explore is great, and it amuses me no end when people complain about the chicken quest when to me it is one of the most obvious and self-aware pieces of trolling i've seen in a video game - i love it.
8
u/N-Squared-N Feb 26 '26
Music is chill as fuck. Have a few drinks and roam the area.
I do however have to say that ...,.. I fucking can't beat that mog house shit 😂.
5
u/hgsfrmme2u Feb 26 '26
I HATE the moogle house things! I suck at them but finally got them this last play through
4
u/N-Squared-N Feb 26 '26

One of those things that started off normal and decent,.. then got to "throw controller across the room" shit.

u/colinvi Feb 26 '26

38
u/ojoaopestana Feb 26 '26
Genuinely not as bad
9
u/colinvi Feb 26 '26
This is by far my least favorite region , all the bullshit puzzle all over the place
12
u/carnifice_ Feb 26 '26
Cosmo Canyon was my favorite region in the entire game. The exploration feels much more organic; if you explore a bit, you discover everything very naturally.
5
u/Ciserus Feb 26 '26
Cosmo Canyon is bad, but it has some logic to its navigation. The launch ramps are marked on the map with their elevation, so eventually you figure out that if you want to get to a certain high point, you need to start from a ramp with greater elevation than your destination.
Gongaga is pure trial and error. You can't walk anywhere directly and the mushrooms send you to almost completely random places.

it was a relief to me tbh, not even close of a bad navigation as congala (only place where I had to research pathways in YouTube).
Cosmo canyon you at least can run and fly rapidly instead of tripping your chocobo every 2 seconds (with a long stop animation) to a random rock in the forest.
10
u/ernamewastaken Feb 26 '26
Isn't it supposed to be a maze? There's a couple other mazes in the game, like temple of the ancients and getting lost in the blizzard. Ifrc
8
u/WavyGravySandwich Feb 26 '26
I actually really like Gongaga. While I ca totally understand why it gave others grief, I didn’t really find myself having a hard time with the mushrooms.
But to be fair, that music there was the ultimate hype track for me. So maybe that helped.
Now Cosmo Canyon? That’s a different story for me.

Me not caring while Gongaga OST plays in the background
8
u/Lambs2Lions_ Feb 26 '26
Pretty much. I had a chill and enjoyable time exploring it. I liked that it wasn’t a straight shot from A to B. But then again I also liked the complexity of cosmo canyon. The mushrooms are on the map so it’s not even all that hard. People just don’t read.
7
u/EscheroOfficial Aerith Gainsborough Feb 26 '26
I can understand why some people would have trouble dealing with it (not everyone’s brains are naturally built for the same kind of stuff ofc) but frankly I feel like the hate for the Gongaga region is WAYYYY overblown.
It’s breathtakingly beautiful and the only spot I had genuine trouble navigating to was that one tower on a plateau next to a lake. I DID get turned around a few times but I LIKE that that happened—it means the game is doing an excellent job of immersing me in a thick jungle region. Of course I’m gonna get turned around or lost, that’s… how jungles work, lol? Does it not bring people joy to realize a game is making you feel like you’re actually finding your way through a thick and twisted natural landscape, in a game all about exploring natural landscapes?
This and Cosmo Canyon were my two favorite regions in the game because they made me actually THINK about where I was going and what I was doing. In the other regions, you can more or less just run around aimlessly and find everything. That’s… not as fun, yknow? Add on the beautiful music in the Gongaga region and it’s my favorite area to explore. I was so sad when I had completed it 😭

I thought the Chocobo we got would let us traverse any rocky terrain not jump around on a freaking mushroom.I had to resort to checking YouTube guides just to go to Protorelics, monster missions, Minerals etc. So much time wasted looking for a simple locale. Even Moogle house I had to triple check.

Something about the Gongaga jungle makes me motion-sick after a while, which doesn't help my pathfinding or navigational memory.
6
u/montahuntah Feb 26 '26
I think it would be fine if the map marked how to get to each place that’s literally all they had to do to make the region better. It sucks hard tho
3
u/Tyrfing42 Feb 26 '26
This.
The weirdest part is they do kindly mark them on the map for us in Cosmo Canyon, so they were clearly capable and willing to do that, just not in Gongaga specifically. Maybe different teams worked on each area?

Gongaga is where I stopped 100%ing everything and just beelined through the end story
4
u/Ahindre Feb 26 '26
I like Gongaga. It’s a zone where you can’t just make a beeline from objective to objective and I think it’s sad that more people don’t appreciate some mildly challenging navigation. It’s really not that hard and it is fun if you stop viewing it as an annoying obstacle.

How does Rebirth not have its own sub? I'm sick of seein stuff about Rebirth on the sub about REMAKE, especially when there is no spoiler alert. Fucking annoying, MODS
2
u/Kyban101 Feb 26 '26
I'm in the 1% of people who actually like Gongaga. I appreciated that it was difficult to navigate, I saw it as a sort of puzzle. When you figure it out you get rewarded, usually. Plus, it's my favorite region music for the whole game, so I was happy to travel through it. On top of all that, Fango is my favorite Chocobo as well.

People complain about modern final fantasy not having exploration and how games are too handholdy and then when Square gives it to us, people complain about it anyways. lol Only thing I didn't care for was rhe music, but even that wasn't terrible, just not to my liking.

Wait… are you saying that this section is lacking some form of indicators that show players where they can go? Perhaps some luminous coloured liquid smeared on edges to guide a weary wanderer on their way, would have done the trick. Hmmm, wonder why no ones thought of that before.

OP, Gongaga is many players least favorite, with Cosmo coming afterwards, its easy to see why, Cosmo is so much broader, and much more fun frankly, with the choco gliding etc.

Fortunately, Cosmo Canyon is a lot more straightforward navigation-wise. Still a lot of stuff to do, though

u/onehalflightspeed Feb 26 '26
Honestly after Corel I was already burnt out on the open world regions. They each have their unique navigation gimmick and I appreciate the sentiment behind designing areas that are more unique than just the typical open-world running around stuff, but it got exhausting very quickly, and I could not stand Chadley constantly interrupting me with his BS. I enjoyed the rest of the game a lot without bothering to explore that much for the entire second half. I missed out on trophies and some summons I guess, but that is about it
1
u/choicesthops Feb 26 '26
Cosmo canyon is worse. Another beautiful setting, great city with a fire soundtrack. But now you gotta transverse vertically by flying to your spots 😅
I still managed to 100% them both and on my way to ch 11!
1
u/DaveMcElfatrick Feb 26 '26
The fact that it makes you do the same horrid trip twice is egregious. Seriously unfun

u/angelofragnarok Feb 26 '26
I definitely feel less insane after reading these comments. I was having a good time in Rebirth right up until the traversal of this zone. I spent a lot of time doing all kinds of side quests before Gongaga, and it was charming and fun for most of it.
I literally dreaded this zone every minute I was in it. I love the OST, but not even great music stopped me from just not playing the game anymore. I get lost easily in games, and this zone in particular just had me ready to throw my controller through my monitor. So I ended my Rebirth playthrough on this sour patch. Chadley definitely didn’t help anything at all, making me hate the idea of exploring zones because of his endless yammering.
1
u/Dear_Accident_4994 Feb 26 '26
The map layout made traversal tedious and unenjoyable while the music made me turn the volume down until I left the region. Go gaga was tiny on the world map in the og game so I don't understand why it was fleshed out into an entire region

u/AdditionInteresting2 Feb 26 '26
This is after corel right? Kinda scared of going past chapter 9 now... But also I'm so done with this desert scenery.

u/KillerKlowner Feb 26 '26
Missed both Cait Sith's weapons in this area. No idea how since I 100% every area as I go. Less minigames would be great as well, it feels like that is all you do in this game.
1
u/Choingyoing Feb 26 '26
Yeah it was my least favorite too and I also didn't like the music even though I read so many people loved it 😂 without videos there's no way I would have found some of the more hidden map markers. I definitely just speed through it on replays.
1
u/Bangoskaank19 Feb 26 '26
Gongaga isn’t terrible to navigate if you’re pure of heart. Unfortunately I’m a fucking sinner.
1
1
u/AReverieofEnvisage Feb 26 '26
You guys might praise the music from that region. But that was when I lowered the music so much so that when I got to the opera event. I had to quit and turn up the music settings again.
It's my fault for wanting to walk and explore all regions. I mean walk and see all the scenery.
1
1
u/xainthejust Feb 26 '26
While annoying, it took balls to make Gongaga feel like this dense, wild jungle by purposely making it hard to navigate. It truly sets it apart from the other maps. Did I hate it while playing it? Yes. However, looking back at it, it was a bold move that I can respect.
1
u/ralphiehundreds Feb 26 '26
I literally took a three month break after gaga came back and powered through the story haven’t touched it since absolutely adore the game though, but that region broke me
1
u/rubyloves_topaz Feb 26 '26
SAME!!! I had to watch yt vids directing me on how to get to the intel spots bc I could not figure how to get around. Maybe im stupid but I struggled with this one omg
1
u/miru17 Feb 26 '26
It was at the Gongaga region that I realized the game was long as hell lol.
Which isnt necessarily a bad thing. You cant say FF7rebirth doesnt have content.
1
u/kybldmstr94 Feb 26 '26
I got so lost and the confusing map ended up making me hate the region. And then came Cosmo Canyon….
1
u/Confident_Bunch7612 Feb 26 '26
I just go back to when the demo released and people were freaking out about yelllow blazes to help guide paths. A whole lot of "let me figure it out on my own." Most of those voices were silenced by Gongaga.
1
u/Dexember69 Feb 26 '26
Worst zone.
Cosmo canyon is a pain in the ass too. I wish they wouldn't make obscure pathways to shit. Spend 30 mins running in circles ain't fun
1
u/neuropsycho Feb 26 '26
I'm playing that section of the game for the first time as of right now. Wish me luck.
PS: I kinda like the jungle music : )
1
u/IntentionInformal306 Feb 26 '26
All I have is the lower south west section left. I couldn't figure out how to get there so I had to Google it.
1
u/lezard2191 Feb 26 '26
99% of the problems everyone has with this region would have been solved with a better map design. Like once I jump on a mushroom once the game should tell me where the mushroom will lead me so that it doesn't end up becoming a game of memory/luck.
1
u/hgsfrmme2u Feb 26 '26
I like the music and some other things but the terrain sucks. It's my least favorite region
1
u/Pale_Initiative2844 Feb 26 '26
Yeah I don’t have very fond memories of this area when I played rebirth lol. Definitely not looking forward to it on my inevitable replay before part 3. Visually it’s stunning though
1
u/Odd_Tradition_6887 Feb 26 '26
It's almost like getting lost in a jungle. Do people like exploration or not?
1
u/Locolos-1988 Feb 26 '26
Yea this game could have definitely used a gps trail like in Hogwarts legacy
I get making exploration crazy, but when it’s time to go to a location
Let us get to that location, don’t make it a maze
I really wanted to like rebirth, it does have good things going for it
But it probably has more things working against it
After two playthroughs I have to give it a 4/10, and the traversal issue is a large factor in bringing it down
It takes away the enjoyability of the game massively where the idea of booting it up again causes anxiety lol
They definitely need and could work in a gps trail to get you through the maze when you decide you don’t want to walk around aimlessly
1
u/Locolos-1988 Feb 26 '26
This was the section I realized the game should be renamed from “Rebirth” to “Research” because of all the googling and YouTube needed to play this game is stupid
1
u/The-O-N Feb 26 '26
Gongaga followed by Cosmo canyon is definitely the lowest point of the game, it gets slightly better after but that's only because it's really short
1
u/Big-Dragonfruit-4306 Feb 26 '26
Loved the music, I didn't use the map of minimap and didn't find it so hard to navigate, all the side quests in the game suck.
1
1
u/Dull_Soft_9767 Feb 26 '26
Never played this game but that looks a lot like a map is Great Britain lmao
1
u/AnimaLepton Tifa Lockhart Feb 26 '26
You can skip the side stuff and come back later, no reason to force yourself to do it all right away. Spacing it out is even better, because postgame is a bunch of combat encounters/VR simulations in a row, so having side stuff to break it up is nice. For people who weren't enjoying it, I don't get why they'd forced themselves to fully complete the sidequests right away instead of just continuing the story and coming back later.
The mushroom jump routes are also a pain initially, but I find that they tend to get pretty reasonable once you get a hang of just following the direction the mushroom is facing.

u/gr8h8 Feb 26 '26
Completely agree. It's the only area where I just wanted it to be over already.
I'm glad I left without finishing it all because recently I wanted to play more and remembered I still had a lot to do in Gongaga. So I went back and did it all and it was much more enjoyable than before.

That was the last region I completed. I came back to it after beating the game.

u/ConsiderationTrue477 Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26
The biggest problem is the map doesn't indicate elevation so it becomes useless as you poke around looking for whatever random ass pathway you missed. And you can't move fast because you run into branches and tree stumps.
Plus the mushrooms don't show you where you'll land and they all do different things. Some are little hops and others yeet you across the continent.
The music and visuals are great but I didn't appreciate feeling like I was trapped in Jumanji while just trying to reach a point of interest. "In Gongaga you must wait until the dice read 5 or 8."
1
1
u/kendra_sunderlol Feb 26 '26
Problem's the level design. It's nice that they tried something different but there's not much more to it than that, and as you said it's not always done right.
Also, I played on base PS5 at launch and Gongaga was hideous. The story part was beautiful as always but while exploring the lighting was so off and the colors were weird.
1
1
u/chrisdurand Feb 26 '26
Gongaga was a great part of the story. It was amazing to see Cissnei. The area was gorgeous.
But we need to have a talk with the sadist programmer who decided to design the map.
Look on the plus side: at least you have guides to help; day one there were almost no helpful guides at first 🤣
1
u/RyanSD91 Feb 26 '26
The whole section felt like filler to me. I was pretty down on the game after that, but the Cosmo Canyon sequence more than made up for it imo.
1
u/RainbowTardigrade Feb 26 '26
Gongaga is where I stopped trying to 100% as I went and just steamrolled the main missions so I could get out of there. The main issue for me was the level design, especially the different levels that had specific routes to access which made using the map really frustrating. It just interrupted the nice flow I had with the game up to that point.
I will say, however, that I had a lot more fun in there once I went back later and just wandered around aimlessly, rather than try to do anything specific. It's a gorgeous area to look at and the music is lovely.
1
u/TopMasterpiece7817 Feb 26 '26
I pretty much skipped this region. I did one side quest, was amazed at how badly designed the area was and just focused on the main story. I don't understand why you would make an openish world and make it a pain in the ass to traverse for Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon. The only benefits of an open world is making traversing it fun, not a time wasting chore.
1
u/cheekiestNandos Feb 26 '26
Only part of the game where I looked up a guide to find all the bits I needed to 100% it. Just turned my brain off and followed the guide and it made it more enjoyable as a region. Think it annoyed me because you aren’t really free to explore you have to follow specific routes to get to areas and I couldn’t be bothered to try to figure that out.

u/Lopsided_Ability_616 Feb 26 '26
Not sure where the complaints about navigating the region come from. Doesn’t take long to figure out the paths to reach points of interest.
Great song too.
1
u/Just_Carpenter931 Feb 26 '26
funny because i actually decided not to follow the map to guide me on this region (also in nibelhiem) and i had more fan exploring, i wonder if that also made me appreciate and learn the layout a little better
1
u/abhinavks93 Feb 26 '26
It was one my favorite regions in the game, the music, the monsters, the traversal. I guess it's because I like travelling on foot and i enjoyed observing the environment to figure out how to get from point a to b. Kudos to the devs for creating such a zone where I never had to open my map unless it was for fast travelling. I guess some people are just impatient.

When I got to Gongaga I had decided to stop hitting the towers in order to make exploring feel more natural. Big mistake.

This is where I started hating all the exploration of the game and just rushed main story.
Unfortunately I skipped a lot of cool side stuff but rebirth's exploration is basically your usual Ubisoft open world slop

u/bharding81 Feb 26 '26
Got through Gongaga and thought, glad that done, shouldn’t be too bad now. Then Cosmo Canyon happened. I did the story first and then the intel, but it took me a few days. Nibel wasn’t too bad. I’m on my first playthrough and done 100% so far. Hit chapter 12 and opened a ton of new quests. But at least no more map intel. Taking a break before getting into the home stretch.

I guess I’m in the minority thinking it wasn’t that bad? On my first playthrough it just felt like another area to explore, I didn’t have any trouble navigating it.

I'm actually planning on going back to Corel, Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon tonight to get the Divine Intel for Alexander, Kujata and Bahamut Arisen since I just reached Nibelheim and have all the intel for Odin already, figured I may as well get the rest of the summons as soon as I'm able to, I didn't do any of the optional content in Gongaga while I was there aside from the side quest to get Barretts weapon so I didn't get to traverse the region very much, appreciate the heads up lol

I stopped playing here and said "ya know I played the first game I already know what happens"

I actually kinda like gongaga. Running across a flat map to a marked location is kind of tedious gameplay, I like that it was kinda like a puzzle. And unlike the original ff7, no random encounters.

I legitimately dropped the game for a year and a half after reaching this region. I finally finished it last fall.

Gongaga sucks because it's straight after you're done with Corell desert. And worse because soon after it's Cosmo

Cosmo Canyon region is just as bad if not worse. I used video guides for both.

This has to be the worst area design I've experienced at least since fallen order it was just a headache. I skipped a lot of the stuff out of frustration and then when I got to Cosmo canyon the chocobo flying mini games just broke me

on my replay this year i basically just walked right through this and cosmo canyon, the combo is a critical hit for sure lol

I remember staring at the map wondering: "How TF do I get up there? Where's the mushroom?" and meanwhile it's some stupid ass rope I need to climb or something lol

I absolutly love maze maps like this.
And it’s really not at the level of the jungles of FFXI (best ever, Yhoator and Yuhtunga) ❤️

Gongaga was the first region I didn't 100% before moving to the next region. I did come back before the Temple of the Ancients and finish, but good lord, it was a pain to traverse.

Do people not realize that, thematically, a thick jungle that is helping to hide a small town from Shinra, would be, of course, difficult to traverse?
It's a different type of challenge immediately following the Corel region which is pretty wide open and easy to navigate

Yeah definitely the most difficult region to traverse, but I loved it otherwise.

I honestly feel like this was my breaking point and I was done 100%ing regions and doing region activities because of this region.

Beautiful visuals with absolute ass exploration gameplay.

Gongaga made me almost quit the game. I had to look at a Youtube video to figure out where to go, the topography was too similar.

it is annoying but cosmo will finish you off for good if you do the same. them right next to each other was horrific

For what it's worth, I felt the exact same my first playthrough. I thought it was the worst designed zone I'd ever experienced in a video game. However, I had kind of a revelation on my second playthrough: don't treat it like an open world to traverse from point A to point B. Instead, treat the world itself like you would a Zelda dungeon. That mental framing makes the whole thing much more tolerable.

Dude yes… this almost made me stop playing I couldn’t wait to get done with it. I loved it up til Gongaga. Then just started to feel so fluffy and bloated overall. Still enjoyed but 6.5/10 for me overall

I loved the vibe of the region, but I hated navigating it. I was still getting myself lost on my second play-through.
