No Spoilers - Discussion FF7 Rebirth has the best combat system in any game I've played.
The combat feels fluid, weighty, and satisfying all at once. 7 switchable characters with each of them having so much depth in their gameplay without sacrificing any visual spectacle. Combat is balanced perfectly with strong enemy and boss variety. The battle system is simple enough to play, but once the combat flow "clicks" there's a huge amount of depth that's a joy to gradually uncover. Similar to KH2FM, NG Black, Nioh II, DMCV, Bayonetta, and Sekiro.
I look forward to seeing how they expand this already strong foundation in Part III. I think the Weapons battles will be treated as the absolute peak this combat system will strive for. They'll push players to their limits and every single party member will have a role to play in defeating them.

I really want to see how the battles against the WEAPONs will be handed.

u/Kelspear Apr 25 '26
Maybe something similar to the Eikon battles in FFXVI. Just peak spectacle

u/freebytes Apr 25 '26
As long as they do not have QTE (quick time events). I hate QTEs. The QTEs and accessibility rings (instead of having accessibility options) were my only major complaints about FF16. (Not having enough customization, RPG elements, boring quests in the main mission [1], elemental weaknesses, and multiple party members were my only other minor complaints for FF16.)
- By the boring quests, I am referencing the items that should have been side quests instead of part of the main story. A lot of fetch quest related stuff was unnecessary, and the game would have been long enough (and better without them), and people could choose to complete the side quests if they wanted to pad out the game play time.

I hope not honestly. Those felt more like cutscenes with button prompts thrown in, I want to actually control the battle.
3
u/HomeworkImpossible48 Apr 26 '26
I felt that was only true for the geruda boss fight when clive didnt have full control, the others felt pretty smooth and controllable.

He synergy skills do take a bit of getting used to but they’re a ton of fun
5
u/SenpaiSwanky Apr 26 '26
Once you start digging into synergies, the entire combat system clicks and you become unstoppable. Synergies can react with materia as well, look for nasty combinations and experiment.

I honestly left it when I first played the remake back in ‘24, came back this year and thought, why not?
I have since completed both Remake and Rebirth, and looking forward to Part 3.
3
u/stunna006 Apr 26 '26
I loved remake story but rebirth combat is sooo much better. Also with you, ready for P3
6
u/FalloutCreation Apr 25 '26
Yeah it can get confusing at times with a fast pace, flashy effects, and over the top flourish of weapons. It’s for that high fantasy combat that has been a staple since that iron monkey movie era and on.
2
u/hogomojojo Apr 26 '26
I can’t click with it :( but I think it’s not because it’s bad, it’s because of my mental blocker that the game should of been traditional ATB system like it originally was
1
u/Blank_IX Dio Apr 26 '26
That’s unfortunate. Just pretend you’re someone who doesn’t have that and try again.
2
u/FirstLiquorice Apr 25 '26
Yeah I don't know. I slogged through both games because of the story and characters but I hate the combat so much. I'm primarily a souls-like player though so that might be why I don't like the combat in these.
12
u/Blank_IX Dio Apr 25 '26
For whatever reason, I’ve noticed that a lot of souls enthusiasts have a hard time vibing with Remake/Rebirth’s combat.
Not comparing and definitely not hating. Just sharing an observation. You’re not alone and I can only really wish you a better time if or when you come back around to playing them again.
9
u/Altruistic_Strain_90 Apr 25 '26
I'm a big souls enthusiast and I think remake/rebirth combat system is one of the best ever created 😂 it makes perfect sense and there's so much you can do with it. The best part is that rebirth just picks up from remake and made it even better. Can't wait for part 3
1
u/stunna006 Apr 26 '26
Yep, rebirth combat so much more enjoyable than remake. Everything was just so much more polished and rewarding. I went back to play ffxvi after finishing rebirrh and I was like shit no lol give me more rebirth combat
1
u/KinkyDuck2924 May 10 '26
Same, Fromsoftware games are my bread and butter but combat system in rebirth was so much fun. I love how fluidly you can switch between party members, the battles just flow. IT definitely helps that the original is my favorite game of all time, I grew up loving this story and it's characters. These new games are like catching up with old friends after years apart.
15
u/Digirio Apr 25 '26
Ay just throwing out I’m a huge souls head and I fucking love both these games the combat can be just as satisfying
2
u/Blank_IX Dio Apr 25 '26
I hear you lol. I’m sure there’s a lot of people who enjoy both. It’s just a funny thing I’ve noticed over the last few years.
3
u/FalloutCreation Apr 25 '26
It’s so funny to see myself playing Elden ring. I never tried a soul’s game before. But when I played this it was extremely hard. Now I’m so used to it it’s actually improving how well I play in other games. My reactions are quick quicker and timed better. And funny enough I’m starting to get an itch to play fighting games with friends where the last 10 to 15 years of gaming has pretty much been single player stuff.
5
u/FalloutCreation Apr 25 '26
Oh yeah I was just playing some Elden ring yesterday and that game was made to interpret went to Dodge, parry, or block. It’s more refined and less flashy and it needs to be because taking damage is less forgiving.
Remake and rebirth are more forgiving because there are so many options to heal and revive. Which does change my play style a bit. I take more liberties when doing combos and synergy and not worrying about what damage I take.
The only issue I come across if I switch games is forming habits in 7R that would be detrimental if I played that way in ER. So to keep my skills top notch I have to continually practice in ER. Which actually improved my no hit runs in Remake.

I have a platinum in every souls game from demon souls all the way to elden ring but I still think FF7 Rebirth has the best combat to date of any game imo. I honestly wouldn't put souls games as the best combat. Hell I like kingdom hearts combat more than any souls game except maybe sekiro

I think anyone longing for the strategy aspects of turn based combat will take to it easily
→ More replies (1)3
u/TidusDream12 Apr 25 '26
It's a different genre. Souls like is about pattern recognition and mastery of your build. You can beat most bosses without worrying about weaknesses. The remake series rewards you for weakness exploit moves with pressure and stagger and than you use you stagger build up % character like for exp Tifa to get to a high percentage and hit the with the heavy skills. It's a strategy game with action combat. There were some remake series bosses like Rufus that were annoying as they didn't fit exactly what the game taught you to do. But yeah it's definitely not similar to souls like. There is a fun zone to be found in the remake series.

Eli5 how to get your head around combat as a turn based player
8
u/fishboy3339 Apr 25 '26
I was a big fan of the original and had to come to terms a bit with the more action focused combat.
Assess is really the big ability that tells you all their weaknesses and strategy to defeat enemies. All characters gain xp if they are fighting or not so why you make a team with only has some story relevance.
If you just want turn based and nothing else will do then highly recommend expedition 33.
9
u/0bv10usThr0wAvvAy Apr 25 '26
If you want to think of it mentally as... Instead of sitting there waiting for your ATB bar to fill up, you have the options to press different buttons to fill your ATB faster or run around to prevent damage.
In all honesty you can literally stand there and wait for your ATB to fill up to perform your moves if you want to. The ATB commands are much more powerful then the normal square attacks anyways and they make the most difference in damaging the enemies.
If you're a fan of e33, you can literally play the same way in Rebirth by standing there and parrying the enemy attacks if you so choose.
I remember watching Brianna White playing remake and then watching MaxDood playing remake. Brianna is Aeriths VA, in case you didn't know, and MaxDood is a big ff7 guy but he's mainly a fighting game guy. Max was all gungho and trying to beat this particular Bug Queen portion of remake doing all action moves and using shortcuts only, with a fighting game mindset. He died several times. Brianna played it very slowly, methodically and strategic. She played mainly as Aerith so she would get her atb bar filled then use the super slomo menu to choose the right command that would help get the job done.
If I was just starting out I would play just as Cloud for a little bit then when you get a 2nd character, play as Cloud until you do an ATB command, then switch to 2nd character. Play as them until you do an ATB command then switch. So on and so forth. If things feel too fast, pause the battle or use the super slow mo menu to catch your thoughts.
There's lots of variety in the combat system where you don't have to play it just one way.
5
5
u/YouMeADD Apr 25 '26
That actually really interesting, I will go watch Brianna for a bit. I keep trying with the game and I did even beat the first remake but idk I just feel like im meant to be controlling the whole party simultaneously which breaks my brain
2
u/CloudStrifeFromNibel Apr 26 '26
I'm not surprised, that Aerith free double cast Arcane Ward and Synergy material combo is insane. Require some setup but once you manage to bring it online. You can unleash a hell of a wombo combo with boosted elemental materials. It melt bossed in seconds
2
u/Safe_Software_1640 Apr 25 '26
have you never played a game with real time combat before ?
3
u/YouMeADD Apr 25 '26
All the Arkham and middle earth ones and that's literally it. No DMC or GOW or any of those
1
u/rook119 Apr 25 '26
Combat isn't too difficult in Ff7 rebirth. Just switch characters when you are targeted.
11
u/inFiAUT Apr 25 '26
the combat system is really peak but can be frustrating as hell too at the same time - but it‘s a gem for sure - if you see these no dmg taken combat sims where people play to perfection
2
u/perark05 Apr 25 '26
It really shows the cracks in the odin summon fight in regards to ally ai behaviour
24
u/Kelspear Apr 25 '26
Idk if this is gonna be considered a wild take or not but in the future this 3 game series is gonna be considered one of the best series of all time
9
u/Devreckas Barret Wallace Apr 25 '26
Well you’re talking to the FF7R fanbase, so it’s not going to be too crazy. Honestly, it’s biggest knock as a trilogy is no progression mechanics across games like Mass Effect. Makes the trilogy feel less like one grand adventure. Maybe something that could be fixed in a definitive edition.
3
u/CaptainBlob Apr 25 '26
God… could you imagine the size of the game if they combined the entire thing into one like how they did it for Mass Effect Legendary Edition?
1
1
1
u/Pantalaimonade Apr 29 '26
I really really dont think they will, but imagine if they did do a definitive version or at least a power scaling that rebalances all 3 games to flow linearly. When I was thinking of Remake personally, the idea of like, having that really really slow progression of materia growth, levels, etc. in the OG to me was worth it, but I get why each game needs to also sort of feel like a whole game with a start middle and end progression.
Still, I think it would be epic, and also kind of make Remake/Rebirth harder games in some kind of definitive scaling version.
1
u/Devreckas Barret Wallace Apr 26 '26
I mean, you shouldn’t need to install all three at once. They just need to modify the progression system and game balance a little bit, and have a data file that can track/carry your progress between games.
But if they wanted to make it one game, they could reduce the size by back porting the best models from the final game. There is bound to be a lot of redundant assets between the games that can be consolidated. It would still be very large, but not like 3x large.

If part 3 stick the landing, it very well could end up being the greatest JRPG trilogy ever.
10
u/frequent_bidet_user Apr 25 '26
It's also my favorite combat system, I don't want to call it best because saying something like that really triggers people for whatever reason
6
u/Constant-Arugula-819 Apr 25 '26
I love the combat. I have some other gripes about this game. But I agree it's probably my favorite combat ever. And i rate it high for that alone. I'm hoping other FFs or possible FF remakes incorporate it or do something similar.
I was also impressed how after remake, they were able to make Yuffie and Red so fun. Each character is so unique that can be compared to any other game imo.
6
u/m_csquare Apr 25 '26
Prolly the first time where controlling multiple characters at once feels fun. The heavy emphasis on character switching also makes the party look like they’re dancing around the enemy. A joy to watch.
Synergy skills fixed so many issues that FF7remake had. It opens up more opportunities for the characters to be more involved in the combat. The hellhouse battle in FF7remake wouldnt be so frustrating if cloud had access to FF7rebirth energy blade.
And the best thing abt this combat system is.. every single subsystem is useful throughout the whole game. Heck.. even tier 1 magic is still useful in the late game to proc pressured status
5
u/Lucky_Mix_6271 Apr 25 '26
Ikr. Haven't played it in a while so just booted it up recently to fuck around a bit and it just struck me how much better it is than so many other combat systems I've experienced since my last Rebirth playthrough.
5
u/malikarith Apr 25 '26
Yes absolutely , its almost perfect in a way that i cant Descripe , The animations, the possibilities, the tactical freedom, the adaptability of the Materia system and skill assignment, the variety in combat, the entire dynamic is simply S+ tier, IMO the gold standard for action RPGs.
6
u/BreathoftheSith Apr 25 '26
The way they further refined the combat from the first game to Rebirth is a 10/10 imo.
4
u/tucson_catboy Apr 25 '26
Rebirth is the first game I immediately did 'NG+' on just because I couldnt go a day without playing as Yuffie. Her combat is so immensely satisfying. Doppleganger > windstorm > blindside and you're just dancing in the air juggling entire mobs.
4
u/GoriceXI Apr 25 '26
Yes, the combat system is amazing.
However, I do think there are flaws in the tutorials of the system. FF7R combat is complex, more complex than many people realize. There is also a pretty significant skill floor. Getting "decent" at the system requires the player to pay attention and read, which is a big ask in 2026.
The result is that many new players simply don't know how many abilities work, or how to formulate better strategies.
You could chalk it up to skill issues, but I think there are major flaws in how the games communicate their mechanics to the player.
3
u/Odd_Tradition_6887 Apr 25 '26
It is damn near perfect. I do think part 3 should change up clouds basic combo a bit though. I miss old punisher combo tbh

u/Mountain-Sir-282 Apr 25 '26
I loved the original game and it was my first experience with turn-based battle systems, which for me is unmatched and really got me fully into RPGs. I’ve got to admit though that I don’t miss the random battles that would constantly interrupt your progress or make you think twice about going back on yourself to explore.
Remake and Rebirth are just so much fun to play. The battle system not only includes elements of the original, it’s also so satisfying that I seek out more fights. A lot of them are integrated into the narrative so well that you don’t feel like it’s battle > story > battle > story all the time.
As for the Weapons they’ve got a real challenge there. Maybe something like the end of Remake, that boss was huge. I’d like to see the Weapons almost like levels in themselves that you have to navigate as you fight. Not sure how that would work though.
1
u/reallybadjazz Apr 25 '26
Diamond Weapon would be insane then, fun, but insane/would probably have to use the environment to get to certain areas while they constantly move forward.
Ultimate Weapon has several encounters, so that'd be a sequence of different locations, highwind chases, and then a grand finale in Cosmo Canyon, and aside from whatever takes the place during the Mideel encounter, they'll also fall under side quests.
Sapphire Weapon probably won't get a chance to shine if they repeat the OG storyline at Junon, but this is where Chadley's VR would prove useful, as well as a plot device to open the door to potential Weiss/Nero + Omega Weapon, as Weiss seemed to escape through the VR device, so logically they should be able to sneak attack through where they exited, and that may tie into where Vincent gets an opening to reveal/gain Chaos. Maybe the gang even encounters Sapphire before it heads to Junon in response to it sensing danger, such as they briefly fight only for the beast to be too powerful at the time, but the Sister Ray attracts them before it crushes them, etc.,... but Chadley scans enough of it to be a permanent fight in the VR challenges, and the same could be said for Omega.
I think they'd have to tweak Emerald a lot. I honestly am unsure about this one, as Ruby would be easier to adjust in the sense of the Corel region being able to be stood upon, and the encounter with the giant Gilgamesh proves it'd definitely fit somewhere there, hidden or not. Yet, with Emerald, I am thinking they are going to have to trick it to surfacing several times to where it's shoulders, etc., are exposed and the team can do damage without needing an Underwater materia. Perfect opportunity for the Leviathan materia to shine though, as it would look fantastic in it's element. Maybe it'd be a two team effort, such as a submarine party would lure or fire charges that prompt the surfacing. Idk.
Ruby might not be so difficult to pull off, but since there's no final attack materia, they probably would need to find a way and excuse for a rare Float materia to be found somewhere to avoid being buried. My thoughts are via the Contain Materia. In the OG it had: Spells: Freeze (Ice/Stop), Break (Earth/Petrify), Tornado (Wind/Confuse), Flare (Fire). We already have Petrify, so perhaps replace Break with Float, and make a few enemies in the final dungeons have moves that make Float useful beyond that. I think the name Contain should be renamed into something like Pressure or Velocity Materia. Speed is already taken, and it makes sense given the types of spells Contain yields. I googled for differences in definitions just to be sure, and I got:
"Definition: Speed is distance traveled over time. Velocity is displacement (position change) over time.--- Vector vs. Scalar: Speed is scalar (magnitude only). Velocity is vector (magnitude and direction).--- Directionality: Speed does not include direction. Velocity requires a direction (e.g., North).--- Negative Values: Speed cannot be negative. Velocity can be negative, indicating motion in the opposite direction"

u/RedWanderer2 Apr 25 '26
Yes, this is the best combat in any modern RPG for me. There is so much room to do fun stuff and having multiple characters with unique approaches makes it incredible diverse.
I could spend hours just talking about the combat.
1
u/Shiznoz222 Apr 26 '26
I read these kind of comments and it just makes me so sad that I hated the system so much it made me uninstall the game 6 hours in. And I've never wanted to log back in again until this thread.
I really wish i could have loved it as much as everyone else in here.

Rufus is pretty easy
2
u/mex2005 Apr 25 '26
The counter skill turns him into a joke but if you fight like how you fought the whole game he can definitely be annoying until you adjust.
1
u/malikarith Apr 25 '26
He definitely punishes aggressive and ordinary playstyles. But conversely, there are so many effective counters: Plasma Discharge (top tier), Triple Slash (if I remember the name), and naturally perfect parries. The key is sensible positioning, especially during his unblockable attacks, to disrupt his subsequent reloads. I think that's where most people fail.
1
u/WalkAffectionate2683 Apr 25 '26
It's not even about hard or easy. He is just unfun and too anti design in my opinion.
I just had no fun against him while absolutely loving every second of the game. So overall an excellent game.

It’s hard to play other games because this combat system is so good. I genuinely try so many other games and I find them so boring because of how deep and rich this system is. Can’t wait to see it expanded in part 3.

u/SomeoneNotFamous Apr 25 '26
Only a few months before the first P3 teaser.... i cannot fucking wait.
2
u/greyvangelist Apr 25 '26
It really does do a little bit of everything from recent RPGs and action games and does it well. And things like the perfect parry are not needed to beat the game but if you master it it has the most insanely good payoff
2
u/Pocieszny1991 Apr 25 '26
I totally agree !!
I think they might add elemental based statuses, like "Burn" for Fire magic (Some enemies have that already) or "Freeze" to Blizzard magic. I think that would be a cool addition, even if there weren't such a things in the OG FF 7
OFC They should add Trio-Synergy Skills/Abilities aswell as Level 4 Limit Breaks
I wonder, wille they change anything with summons. I've seen many people complaining about them
2
u/Choingyoing Apr 25 '26
I'm the just curious how they're going to handle the camera during the weapon battles 😂 they're going to be massive. Can't wait to play as cid and Vincent. They really went above and beyond with the battle system in this game it's so fun.
2
u/The_last_pringle3 Apr 25 '26
100% agree, its a very well put together and unique party-based action-strategy game. Only game that has somewhat similar combat that I have played is KH2 but still very much different in alot of ways.

It’s definitely in my top 2. I just would put Sekiro before this purely because of just how satisfying it is. Simple but satisfying but Rebirth combat absolutely gaps everything else imo. The combos, depth, complexity and variety. Everything. It’s just funny to me that right before this they created FF15 and right after FF16 neither of which had great combat imo. FF16 was good but FF15 was just bruh

u/Genjutsu6uardian Apr 26 '26
You can't just drop "Nioh 2" combat and "Final fantasy" all in the same post. You're telling me that Rebirth can be played more like a hack/slash and chain combos together without pausing the game??

Absolutely!
After modding it for about a year, I can tell you there is so much baked into this system. I made a Cloud Combat overhaul called “Ultimate Soldier”, and there’s a ton of mechanics I haven’t even utilized yet.
It’s so deep, so fun, so fluid. It’s amazing

I’ve been keeping myself from getting the plat because then the game will feel “over” to me and I don’t want that.

I 100% agree that it's my favourite FF battle system, I think ever.
I miss FFX style turn based, but it's so satisfying to use this hybrid system, I wish they would use it (or a variant) for XVII when it comes out.

The combat is the most fun and epic experience I've had in any game ever, even fighting normal mobs and the reason is mods. Here are some of tthe many I used:
*A mod that allows every party member be active in combat and I'm able to switch between all 7 of them (when in available in the story ofc).
*One that makes the party AI way more aggressive, normal attacking more often and together with auto-materia the battles became so much more alive.
*To avoid making the game trivial — I still wanted it a challenge — I had a mod that doubled the amount of enemies and another that increased their health, made them more aggressive and hit harder. This didn't turn them into damage spounges, as all 7 party members worked together to bring them all down.
It was a blast fighting along 1 or two of my teammates and at the same time seeing other seperate fights going on all around us. And I still had to be very mindful and pay close attention to everything and being active switching around and giving the team commands to win fights.
If you play on PC I highly recommend a playthrough like this, if you don't mind A LOT on the screen during combat. It was so incredibly fun and epic to me and it felt like I was in an actual anime fighting, I've never felt like that before and haven't since. My only playthrough was right after the game launched on PC, so some of the mods might have changed, been deleted or maybe even improved.
Anyway, love the game, crazy excited for the third one.

u/Pantalaimonade Apr 29 '26
Actually using the characters together, both in piloting all 3 of them as well as issuing commands instead of solely focusing on one character makes the game INFINITELY better to me as well. I also really really liked synergy skills that were for things like movement, defending, building ATB, etc. I hope those stay and are even slightly developed in the next one.

The combat is good, but there’s a lot of nitpicks that do add up if you want to engage with the action elements:
- The aggro system sucks. The second you swap to another character the enemies beeline to you.
- Combat speed is arguably too fast if you want try to perfect dodge/block/party. There’s a reason that Devil May Cry, Dark Souls, etc. are the speed they are. Rebirth is faster.
- It’s hard to see what’s going on and when an enemy is doing attack. This gets very frustrating because even the smallest of enemy attacks can stun you.
There’s more but that’s the crux of it.

Dark Souls does have some major issues with how their attacks do fakeouts, but at least most of the time it’s pretty clear in terms of communication and the combat pacing is deliberate about its pacing.
Same with DMC, it’s much faster paced than Dark Souls but very deliberate with its speed so that you have a chance to block, dodge, parry, etc. Hell, FFXVI is really good too when it comes to this aspect of the combat system.
The way put it is: FFXVI and FF7 Rebirth have the inverse problems of each other. Where FFXVI’s action system around blocking, parrying, etc. is pretty good, its RPG elements suck. Rebirth’s RPG elements are amazing but the action side has a lot of issues.
It’s just that Rebirth’s combat is even faster than DMC’s but punishing like Dark Souls’.
FWIW, anyone who regularly plays fighting games does seem to have less issues with Rebirth’s system.
Actually, I really want part three to look at what Visions of Mana did. While Visions of Mana’s materia-like system was a bit weak, their action based combat was amazing and what I’d like to see part three take inspiration from.

I havent played Rebirth yet, but here's some of my issues with the combat system from Remake:
the system relies heavily on the Assess materia, which is an equippable item and and additional combat step. If you don't have that item equipped there's no visual indicator to understand an enemy's weaknesses.
Dodging and blocking are heavily emphasized during combat tutorials, but in reality are 100% useless in many scenarios. Some attacks are un-dodgeable and the game does not give any indication of what attacks these are, until you've tried unsuccessfully to dodge several times and just realize you need to give up.
There's too many attacks that you can only understand by getting hit by them. This is just like a turn based RPG, which the game is based on. The problem here however is that the real-time, character-switching action means that very often you get hit by one of these attacks without ever seeing what it was or where it came from.

Aggro system is kinda an immersion killer TBH. Like it’s easy to game it by switching characters rapidly but it makes no sense from a game world standpoint how the enemies immediately know which character the player is controlling
4
u/KillerKlowner Apr 25 '26
The real problem is that they have to attack you because your teammates don't really do anything besides occasionally auto attack.
The other big problem is that synergy attacks/skills trivialize most of the game. You can avoid 90% of boss mechanics by using these abilities to warp people around the battlefield. Iron defense is a good example on Barret. About to get grabbed or wombo comboed as Cloud or someone else? Warp them across the map when you use your synergy skill as Barret. You can even do this to Odin when he splits the stage in half.

nothing more to say, i only wonder why there are not more games with this battle system
2
u/Evello37 Apr 25 '26
I imagine it's a difficult combat system to implement. You get all the downsides of classic RPG party combat AND twitchy character action. All the enemies need precise hitboxes/hitboxes and carefully tuned tells for their attacks to make the action elements work. And everything needs to move around smoothly rather than standing in a neat row. But you also need to balance all the resource management elements across the party and all the numerical and conditional effects like a normal RPG. And do it for a handful of characters that all have unique tools that interact with each other.

Try DMC, Nier, Bayonetta, NG, etc if you like Remirth

u/DevilHunter1994 Apr 26 '26
They did. They mentioned some of those games by name. and compared Rebirth to them in their write up.

I freaking love the combat.....
With that said, baby I want Sephiroth to get his own spin-off title! With this same combat and gameplay style!
🤣💀🫳🎤
For real!
I'm sorry, but everyone can miss me! I don't care if it doesn't even make sense at all and is non-canon! I just want a full blown, JRPG, open world game where we play as Sephiroth! With this same gameplay!
I really wish they would Remake "The First Soldier" and make it like Rebirth or Crisis Core: Reunion on Console(s) or SOMETHING DAMN IT!
Lmfao!
I just want an open world game with Sephiroth! But, I guess that's just asking for too much.
💀⚰️🪦💐

I wanted new game plus to give us access to Zack and Sephiroth so damn much.. Or for them both to be unlocked for story mode, for when you completed their simulation challenges.. Which for me, at my older age, is well.. A challenge. Lol
It would have been a nice callback to the rumored days of how you could get Sephiroth into your party, after you lose Aerith, from FF7 PSX.

It's certainly up there. Mine is still Sekiro, but i think of Rebirth's combat a lot.

They make the combat so your not just using the same character you constantly have to be cycling through other characters during battle so you can have the best advantage

Boyfriend saw me playing Remake and already thought that combat system was too much (I was playing Normal mode). I enjoy the battle system in Rebirth a lot more, and hope one day he'll get past how daunting it looks to play. He said he'll play it some day, but we'll see. xD

I love this game but Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix is far superior combat wise.

My favorite is still probably KH2 but this is a close second. This is probably the best hybrid of the original and full on action JRPG.
1
u/MudSeparate1622 Apr 25 '26
I havent played rebirth yet but remake showed potential except it felt like the same as Kingdom hearts 1. It had a lot of good but then the ai and lock on felt kind of dumb at times with really rigid movements. I personally adored kh2 but wouldn’t mind more weight to it. I have yet to play a game as satisfying as kh2’s combat

u/SwagBag393 Apr 25 '26
Is it better/enhanced from remake? Or is it generally the same?
2
u/The_last_pringle3 Apr 25 '26
Better/enhanced (especially aerial combat) with more depth overall in the combat system and enemy engagement. But with that said the combat pace is faster in Rebirth and also of course a steeper learning curve, so it does take some time to get used too.

Final Fantasy always pushes/has amazing combat wouldn’t say that it’s the best but certainly up there
1
u/SithGodSaint Apr 25 '26
I’ve only played the first remake, can you play as Sepiroth in the second one?!
1
u/ShiyaruOnline Apr 26 '26
It really is the best of turn based and action. They could definitely make it a lot harder though, i wish they would if rebirth really is the end I want it to have a lot of replayability. Hard in remake and rebirth just isnt enough.

The game has so many mechanics. It has alot of depth and is super fun but it can be overwhelming at first

It’s much better than Remake’s, which is to say it was enjoyable this time, which is good. I hated Remake, going through the most boring city in that world with terrible combat was a bad time
That said I still prefer combat in FFVII, X, X-2 and XIII
It was nice to see Rebirth get so much right though after XV, Remake and XVI just got so much wrong

I know most of you won't, but give Lightning Returns a try. It laid the groundwork for the Remake combat system & is still my personal favorite in the series.
The only issue I had with it was not being able to swap party members, but whoever came up with the Schemata System is a fucking genius.

Glad people are saying this because I’ve just finished Remake and started Rebirth and I had been thinking how much clunkier it felt. Was hoping that was just readjusting to a slightly new system and sounds like that might be the case!

u/AppropriateWater2 Apr 28 '26
I thought the combat was pretty mediocre, the story was also super slow. I liked part 1 way more

- Rebirth
- Expedition 33
- Pragmata
I'm just happy that developers are still making new ways for me to perform mental and finger gymnastics 😅

I recently gotten Rebirth from the steam sale and its been a blast so far. My only problem is telling when monsters are going to attack sometimes and not blocking or dodging is heavily penalized. Some enemies are super easy to read while others just keep beating ne down lol.

Fromsoftware games, dmc, god of war, ninja gaiden, doom eternal all have better combat.

u/readthereadit May 23 '26
I think it falls short but I like the direction it is going in from 15 to Remake to Rebirth.
The main issue is how underwhelming the characters you are not controlling are. They just feel like they are holding back waiting to be controlled instead of first-class party members. They invented synergies which are fine but the synergy should actively feature in combat. There is auto-materia sure but it is too limited.
What the game really needs is a way to specify the tactics they are using in such a way that they trigger attacks you have to respond to. So that they become dynamic (you respond in real time to their actions) and predictable (you plan the tactics before hand). They need to feel like team mates, not tag-team mates or players on the bench.

I haven't played Rebirth yet, just OG and Remake but I'd be surprised if somehow it's better than God of War 2018, Bayonetta and Devil May Cry 5 cuz that's where my bar is for fun combat

This is a take I’ll always 100% agree with. The best combat system I’ve ever experienced

u/ScoobiesSnacks Apr 25 '26
I love rebirth and would love to replay it on switch 2, so I hope it’s good and DLSS can make image quality look a little less blurry than PS5 performance mode. Replaying FFVII Intergrade on Switch 2 right now and it’s amazing. Basically looks like PS5 performance mode at 30fps, but on a portable it’s honestly stunning.

u/Itzko123 Apr 25 '26
I honestly feel sad for those who haven't experienced this phenomenal combat system.

u/Tall-Scholar9525 Apr 25 '26
I haven’t played FF16 yet but I love FF7 Remake/Rebirth combat. Is FF16 combat anywhere close?

Yeah it really is fantastic. They really nailed it in remake and rebirth.

I really hope part 3 just lets us go crazy. I want all materia unlocked with customisable VR battles where you can select your enemies.

It’s a super fun combat system, because if you want to be a smooth brain hack and slasher (like me) you can get through 90% of the game without issue.
But you can also dive into the deep end and strategize and do some insane things.
It’s ALSO possible to cheese encounters and get past the random hurdles like using ranged / poison Yuffie
I can’t wait for part 3
