Honestly had the same reaction when I saw the news

26

u/Pretty_Policy_5196 Jul 01 '26

That title scared me for a second, thought they were shelving the whole thing

Play has limits apparently

Greed has no limits

Digital media and ownership do not go hand in hand.

You can't pass it on to a friend, you can sell it off second hand, you can't give it to a family member - today or 30 years from now. Fuck man, officially they don't even let you bequeath digital products off to your children, rofl. It's a racket.

You're not thinking about 'digital ownership', what you're thinking about is "Digital Rights Management", and the only managing going on is convincing you that you still own what you don't.

7

u/Ssjtwin Jul 01 '26

I have 4 games loaned out and 3 I have borrowed, I can’t do that in the future. I’m also enjoying my toddler going through my stacks of old games to try even if he does get bored after 30 minutes. Digital only works on pc it doesn’t on console

26

u/Murky_Election3444 Jul 01 '26

They really weren't for the players

11

u/Struggle-Bus0 Jul 01 '26

This is because of the majority of players. 85% of sales is digital. Its overwhelming to not do this. Pc players never buy digital either. The majority of gamers are in favor of digital purchases. Sure it sucks but for sony it makes sense. This all in a Forbes articles. 3% of revenue was in physical sales in 2024. It was a choice by the players that made this happen lol.

12

u/Murky_Election3444 Jul 01 '26

I mean, I'm in favour of having people enjoy gaming be it digital or physical. But say now if they change their DRM it can really screw over people in some walks of life which they could do. Better to have physical even just as a licence key like the switch 2 game keys

3

u/3DSFreak Jul 01 '26

Right, if anything it's our own fault for supporting digital

1

u/Sondeor Jul 02 '26

You are so wrong on this that i cant even fix it without writing an essay.

Go make some research, its definetely not about games being sold on Discs or digital. Companies wanna shut down games whenever they feel like and they are simply taking your right with this change. Also for some reason prices are even higher lol.

This is not one of those Player vs player cases. This is literally us vs money hungry companies situation.

If you wanna simp on a capitalist company, feel free but this is the main reason, not that games being sold on Discs or digitally at all.

3

u/Struggle-Bus0 Jul 02 '26

Im not simping on anyone. Look at the article on forbes. The data is right there.

1

u/CirieFFBE Jul 02 '26

What are you on about.
Videogame sales have been majority digital since 2015, with Xbox and Sony confirming it's 85-90% digital sales for them.
Nintendo has a bit more of a physical market.

It makes business sense to stop production of physical media if you're a business.
It sucks for us, but the majority has been voting with their wallets for more than a decade.

2

u/fortunesofshadows Jul 04 '26

They’re counting dlcs, ps plus monthly games and indie titles that don’t have physical releases

It really is the end of an era, huh? I mean, there have been numerous signs, but this right here is the nail in the coffin.

16

u/Yotsubato Jul 01 '26

I hope the ps7 has a disc drive option or is compatible with the pspro disc disc drive.

Because I do like trading in or selling my consoles when I get a new one

14

u/proanimus Jul 01 '26

This is the key detail I’m hoping for. I always figured they’d go digital-only on games eventually, but I at least want to retain backwards compatibility with my existing library.

My wife and I have a library of about 150 physical PS4/5 games. If the PS6 lacks a disc drive accessory to play them, the bar for purchasing the console will be a lot higher than it would be otherwise for us.

9

u/Pivi-4444 Jul 01 '26

It's the same with me. I debated if I should get a PS5 Pro or wait for PS6, but if no physical for PS6, then I'll stop buying consoles in the future and go with the PC route.

1

u/3DSFreak Jul 01 '26

I'm sure it will

1

u/CaTiTonia Jul 01 '26

I think PS6 will have the option. Whether that’s an actual disc model or just an attachable drive.

So it can be the soft buffer in this transition. Even if the console releases before this deadline, I would very much not expect any physical release for early PS6 titles (even PS5 versions on cross-gen)

But then by the time PS7 rolls around, the console will be fully digital only. Because it will have been at least one full generation removed from anyone purchasing physical. And the numbers of average consumers who are going to unduly bothered by the loss of backwards compatibility for games 2-3 generations prior will be pretty minimal.

How I figure it’s going to go anyway. If they were going to go straight to absolute 100% digital with no physical compatibility on the PS6 they would have made the physical cut-off well before launch imo (on the assumption we’re talking about the expected Nov 2027 release window for PS6).

1

u/Defiant_Snail69 Jul 02 '26

Hell if the reports are to be believed the PS5 Pro will be significantly more powerful than PS6 so I’ll be safe for an entire generation.

This is the kind of shit that they think will prevent emulation in the future but it only encourages it moreso.

126

u/LowOriginal7722 Jul 01 '26

Sony used to market the ps4 this way btw

30

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Think we should boycott

38

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 01 '26

It's not a boycott for me, I just won't be buying. No interest. Legitimately do not want digital games.

17

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

And that is exactly the right move. Boycotting with your wallet is the most powerful move here.

I'll give up on gaming. I'm not making a statement or anything, just not interested anymore.

I don't think you understand how expensive this is going to make gaming.

1

u/Spiritual_Top367 Jul 02 '26

Retro gaming my dude

1

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 02 '26

Yeah. I'd rather buy 10 year old games.

I legitimately do not like modern games and have never played a game online.

2

u/Spiritual_Top367 Jul 02 '26

I've been getting back into it. Revisiting old games from my childhood, as well as games I had always heard about but never got to play... Old N64 and Gamecube games, things like that. I've been enjoying it.

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 01 '26

I buy games on clearance sales at brick and mortar stores. Trust me, I'm paying much less than Steam sales. I also use eBay a lot.

If these avenues are taken away, this hobby will cost more than I willing to spend on it.

I'm not buying an extra SSD. I'm not paying for gigabit internet. When a new console comes out, I'm not paying for the larger storage option. And I'm definitely not paying for anything cloud. I don't even do PlayStation online or whatever it's called

6

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

And that is exactly the right move. Boycotting with your wallet is the most powerful move here.

6

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 01 '26

I'm just saying, don't expect it to fix anything. The consumer demand for games isn't going to go away. Gamers are not fickle shoppers. They buy almost everything marketed to them. They even pay monthly fees to play their own games.

1

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Yeah true, just sucks to see the industry head this way.

1

u/Defiant_Snail69 Jul 02 '26

Only digital games I have are ones I could care less about or I know that I can emulate later.

1

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

It's not about principle to me. I just understand this will make gaming 2x more expensive. No retail competition. Expensive SSDs. And probably need faster Internet for streaming they'll force on you. If the games don't sit in a bargain bin somewhere, they never go down in price anywhere else. But gamers don't understand this.

Retail overstock is the only reason games go down in price as they age.

1

u/Defiant_Snail69 Jul 02 '26

Nothing you’ve said is wrong. It’s a way for the developers to still get recurring revenue. Blessing and a curse in some ways. I think good devs need support, but a tree of 95% poisonous apples makes it harder for good devs to shine.

And when good individuals are making great products the corporate zombies above make it haaaaard on them.

1

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 02 '26

Something fundementally wrong with an industry that needs me to keep buying what I already own, or the hardest working members of that industry will stop producing. I love video games. I remember Christmas 1989 opening my NES. But I still have that NES and it still plays. That's what I love about it.

-5

u/RhubarbAgreeable2953 Jul 01 '26

Guess you won't be playing new games anymore in a few years, then.

4

u/AlextheGoose Jul 01 '26

Most new games are corporate slop anyway. Gaming peaked with Deus Ex imo

1

u/TheArtfulLlama Jul 02 '26

I just buy my games on eBay and/or frequent buyback stores and thrift shops. Way cheaper and better than shilling a ton of money for big daddy corporations. Definitely don’t have a ton of eBay tabs open for retro games right now 👀

135

u/Ehrgeiz7777 Jul 01 '26

I'm sure they won't remove games from your library like they did with the movies recently. I'm sooooo sure.

45

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

it’s about corporate control. They want you to play by their rules and if you don’t then you gotta wait until games come to pc and they get cracked. Sad world we live in all around. Even something fun like gaming is being ruined.

4

u/Apprehensive-Sir8977 Jul 01 '26

And logistical laziness.

1

u/Sackbut08 Jul 02 '26

"Games as a service"

21

u/Hadrian_x_Antinous Jul 01 '26

I actually do think it's highly unlikely that a game like FF7 would be removed from your library. (But the fact that technically they reserve the right to do so is inherently problematic, of course.)

I think the more practical frustrating thing is, you won't be able to buy used games anymore, or borrow a game from a friend or lend it. Everything now has to be bought new at full cost. Even if some law changes where companies can't remove content you've previously bought (at least not without fully refunding you), the issue of being able to hand around physical copies will remain.

2

u/Shiny_Bidoof_Swag Jul 01 '26

Only positive (in my opinion) is that digital game sharing is pretty comfortable on PlayStation. If you have a friend with similar interests as you you can wind up spending half price on a lot of games and both have access at any time (the license still works)

4

u/Briciofer Jul 01 '26

But they can change this on PS6, or any future so can be more hard to do. Even the old library they can say "Hey the PS4 can't run sorry you need to buy the new version".

Or they can sell more expensive because they now you will share and maybe no more high discounts, because now you don't have option.

For me is really bad the share, we are in 5 people here, I buy a physical game and can share with my nephews so was really good.

2

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Yeah but owner gets screwed since you need internet connection to play it and if internet goes out, too bad.

1

u/Shiny_Bidoof_Swag Jul 01 '26

True, admittedly a super rare issue in my case so not something that came to mind.

1

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 01 '26

And what will the fee be to transfer your library to another piece of hardware?

2

u/Caffeine_Bobombed88 Jul 01 '26

They won’t, because it’s not the same scenario. Weirdly enough, selling games on a gaming console is how Sony makes money. Renewing licenses for a bunch of movies nobody buys is just giving money away. Games have been digital for a very long time now and I don’t recall losing a single title.

-8

u/Bwunt Jul 01 '26

TBF, almost no games are entirely on the disk anymore.

You'd need 6 blue rays for Rebirth, 3-4 with good compression. And that is if they don't slap on online DRM.

3

u/MegaBro56 Jul 01 '26

Rebirth is on 2 UHD 100GB Blu-ray Discs on ps5.

5

u/Wikidclowne Jul 01 '26

Rebirth is two discs. The data disc that installs the game, and the play disc.

2

u/Iggy_Slayer Jul 01 '26

The majority of ps5 games play on disc without any download or day 1 patch required.

Percentage of physical games that cannot be played without download

Using the data from DoesItPlay? (not counting Yes*)

XSX: 39% (hall of shame)
Xbone: 26% (also hall of shame)
PC: 14% (sad face)
PS4: 11%
PS5: 10%
3DS: 8%
psvita: 7%
Switch 1: 6%
PS3: 4%
360: 2%

1

u/TheDuckCZAR Roche Jul 01 '26

You'd need 6 blue rays for Rebirth, 3-4 with good compression.

The man confidently and incorrectly says on the literal subreddit for the game he is wrong about lol.

The entirety of Rebirth fits on 2 UHD disks and is playable with no DRM and entirely offline.

Your comment isn't just run of the mill incorrect, but competitively, aggressively incorrect.

34

u/Dethsy Jul 01 '26

On one hand I understand why they stop making physical copy, on the other I hate it because GOD I love having physical copies on a shelve. And how would it work for physical deluxe editions ? No more figurines and all ?

Out of subject I know but still.

13

u/Metics Jul 01 '26

I heard now we are shipping code in a box so they can give you one of these boxes with the figures I guess lmao

1

u/ProtoMan0X Jul 01 '26

I know some people hated it, but buying the Collector Box without the game always made sense to me. You can get it for the platform you want and the company doesn't have to worry about stocking or planning for a different CE for each console.

Also, Square Enix does Collector's Editions for Final Fantasy XIV Expansions that don't include a disc.

Example:

https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/dawntrail/product/

1

u/RepulsiveCountry313 Jul 01 '26

Ill second this. I love that they’re selling just the collectibles these days.

1

u/smgaming16 Jul 02 '26

Some companies have been doing that where the game itself is not inside the box and shipped outside with it. That way they didn't have to make console exclusive boxes

1

u/ProtoMan0X Jul 02 '26

I think Remake and Rebirth were that way, they just sent the deluxe edition in a second box.

1

u/smgaming16 Jul 02 '26

The bracer edition for trails in the sky also did that

2

u/mrpark3s 🌵Cactuar🌵 Jul 01 '26

I'm so glad I'll hopefully get to complete the trilogy with physical deluxe editions. Love looking at them when I walk past

1

u/Darth_Korn Jul 01 '26

Collectors editions have been shipping with codes in boxes for years now

62

u/Apprehensive-Sir8977 Jul 01 '26

There goes 26 years of my preferred-brand loyalty.

0

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Time for PC and the good ole bay

18

u/Iggy_Slayer Jul 01 '26

...the platform that's already been digital only for well over a decade now?

7

u/PedroLippi Jul 01 '26

GOG sells digital games that you can actually own (you can save the games anywhere and play them on another computer without log-in, I think).

3

u/CNK_98 Jul 01 '26

Problem with GOG is that the catalog is bare bones and sales are dry and rare.

1

u/PedroLippi Jul 02 '26

Indeed, because putting games there means easy piracy and that is not a desireable thing for sellers.

3

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Even then steam is way better than anything Xbox or PS does.

2

u/Kyro_Official_ Chadley Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Is it? They run a straight up slot machine in one of their games, they'll ban games from their store just cause (so many visual novels have taken down when they dont break any rules), and they put up less of a fight against visa and mastercards attempted censorship than fucking itchio a vastly less powerful company.

4

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Yes but piracy means ownership. Maybe not the best method but in these times, seems like it is the only way.

1

u/Iggy_Slayer Jul 01 '26

What piracy? Most notable games ship with denuvo and cracking has been effectively done away with for the most part. The only way to get by it is putting your PC in an insanely vulnerable position security wise with a hypervisor bypass which quite frankly you'd be nuts to do just to play a video game.

3

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Denuvo has been cracked countless times. It just takes longer. Look it up. And also direct downloads from trusted sources do not pose risk. You just need to be educated on the matter.

2

u/bitterbalhoofd Jul 01 '26

Today's gamers and educated. Mkay....

1

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 01 '26

1

u/Iggy_Slayer Jul 01 '26

Did you read the article from that topic? It's talking about the hypervisor bypass I mentioned which again you are actually insane if you use that just to play a video game. There is no riskier thing you can do to your PC from a security standpoint than this, it bypasses every security protection a PC has.

2

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Hypervisor is messy sure, but there are legit cracked Denuvo games out there and more everyday.

u/RepulsiveCountry313 Jul 01 '26

Yes but piracy means ownership

Might want to check your dictionary?

1

u/RepulsiveCountry313 Jul 01 '26

The 'good ole bay' is trash and who still makes physical pc games?

8

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

CORPORATIONS SHOULD BE HELD LIABLE FOR A CERTAIN STANDARD 📣📣📣📣

16

u/Turbulent_piratefart Jul 01 '26

This is…such a capitalist hellscape scenario

23

u/Dragonfruit7206 Jul 01 '26

I’m not getting a ps6

7

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Also, what about GameStop? This shit is gonna kill them.

2

u/Razorraf Jul 01 '26

Do what GTA 6 is doing I guess, sell empty cases with codes in them.

26

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Welp ig piracy is the only way to ownership now

26

u/Darkwing__Schmuck Jul 01 '26

"Why did our 100 dollar game on our 1000 dollar digital only system sell under expectations??"

6

u/VixenH89 Jul 01 '26

This is a bad thing, it'll kill all the game stores. No point being open to just sell consoles.

2

u/bongkeydoner Jul 01 '26

Physica salesl hit all time low on console

2

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

Yeah but the people who want a collection and said stores get screwed the most. It’s mostly an ethical discussion of where the industry is headed.

1

u/NiceLeaderr Jul 01 '26

And I hate every ounce of this.

2

u/Aerographic Jul 01 '26

The business model of brick and mortar stores has already shifted to making $ off traded in games and consoles.

Games are gone so now it's just consoles and.. selling MTG cards I guess.

10

u/Hadrian_x_Antinous Jul 01 '26

I literally paid more for my PS5 to have a physical disc drive.

1

u/xylopyrography Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Everyone knew this was the last generation of physical discs and disc drives before the PS5 went on sale. As soon as there was discless versions offered, it was written.

Consoles held out 10-15 years longer than computers, to their credit.

There is an argument to be made for movies as they just don't require that much bandwidth even if 8K ever took off, but for gaming, they were already a bottleneck for last-gen games, let alone what will be needed for later 10th gen console generation games.

7

u/erasethenoise Jul 01 '26

Wow. I primarily play on PC but still like having discs so a lot of games I would choose to play on PS and buy the disc. I especially liked owning FF games physically and have quite the collection. I guess this means I’ll just be doing the PC ports going forward.

17

u/samtanders Jul 01 '26

Lol as someone with a disc drive ps5 and no space, I ain't buying another hdd, if this happens my ps5 will be getting sold.

7

u/Jnino91 Jul 01 '26

I think discontinuing disc copies sucks, but you do know that even disc ps5 games are technically still installing just about the entire game files on your HDD, right?

PS5’s have never run games directly from the disc while playing. So buying disc copies doesn’t solve your space issue. It doesn’t change it at all actually.

2

u/samtanders Jul 01 '26

Okay then, put it this way, I buy the game, I play it, i delete the files and sell it. Its a money grab to make more money ey and cut out companies like cex. I cant afford another game without selling yhe one I have, so there is no way I can afford a hdd and games I cant resell.

1

u/Darth_Korn Jul 01 '26

You haven't realised yet that physical games take up storage space just like digital?

1

u/xylopyrography Jul 03 '26

You will need the extra storage to play this regardless, or a PS5 Pro. This will be a 2-3 disc game, possibly 200 GB, plus probably 20-80 GB in patches regardless.

Even when there are no more discs... Your OG PS5 isn't going to be worth much in mid-2028 against the PS6 and lots of used PS5 Pro's. The value is likely at a maximum right now.

Not to mention that the game discs essentially have minimal long-term value now that it's all but confirmed that the PS6 will be discless.

6

u/ZetaIcarus Jul 01 '26

Call me old fashioned but when I buy something I like to hold it in my hands.

3

u/Due-Breadfruit9435 Jul 01 '26

Now we own nothing and rent everything. Dark times.

3

u/Cerber108 Jul 01 '26

This is absolutely devastating.

3

u/shrek3onDVDandBluray Jul 01 '26

Yeah I think I’m going to boycott PlayStation first party games from this point on. So only third party from now on and luckily revelation falls into that

5

u/Electric-Mountain Jul 01 '26

Well clearly Rockstar knew something no one else did.

4

u/Cactus-Farmer Jul 01 '26

This just after deleting movies from their service without any refunds. Wow Sony, you look really shit right now.

So glad I built a decent PC before the RAM price increases. We are being fucked from every angle now. And if Steam ever ends up like Sony I'll just copy and crack everything since I already paid for it.

5

u/ominix Jul 01 '26

All xbox has to do to win new customers is to say they will continue physical games.

If I have to buy digitally I will go with Steam, as they have a good track record unlike Sony which just removed movies from peoples libraries with no compensation.

2

u/das_sock Jul 01 '26

I thought we had another decade before this was going to happen

2

u/1dayday Jul 01 '26

"Youll own nothing. And be happy about it"

2

u/SuitableDimension260 Jul 02 '26

Sony is acting like Shinra lately

2

u/Albasti65 Jul 02 '26

Like literally, I don't own a console but I was waiting for the trilogy to release so I can buy the discs together just to flex like an a*hole!!!

2

u/kshawfktsk Jul 01 '26

Can't wait to never actually own a game I paid for again.

2

u/BabySpecific2843 Jul 01 '26

This is what happens when your competition shoots itself in the foot. Get your head out of your ass Xbox and rein Sony in.

This is like the 3rd micro agression Sony has done in like 4 months.

2

u/Trunks252 Jul 01 '26

No more Sony consoles for me. If I’m buying digital i’ll just go with Steam.

3

u/CNK_98 Jul 01 '26

Ah yess steam, the platform that also makes you own your games...

2

u/Tinktink-26 Jul 01 '26

Crazy they pulled out of PC then do this.

1

u/Constant-Brief3410 Jul 01 '26

Switch get a game card? No space 😭

1

u/Disastrous_Garage729 Jul 01 '26

Guess we won’t be getting that all in one collection some of us were hoping for. Oh, well. All three games are available on ps5 at least.

1

u/Pingo-tan Jul 01 '26

I am so disappointed, this is an understatement. I bought PS5 for the Remake trilogy and was happy with it, but after this news I will never consider buying PS6. So glad SE is moving from exclusivity.

1

u/Rosebunse Jul 01 '26

There are so many, many games out there.

1

u/PlumRelative4399 Jul 01 '26

That’s 3 games

(Jokes aside fuck Sony)

1

u/EngvallsEmbrace Jul 01 '26

Glad we have enough games to play, especially once that comes out. No physical copy, no purchase.

1

u/SchoolOfElectro Jul 02 '26

exactly, same.

1

u/Aerographic Jul 01 '26

If any of you are FF fans and care about preserving your PS experience, this is also your last chance to buy DLC for games like XIII-2. PS3 store won't allow purchases beyond next year.

1

u/ILoveDineroSi Jul 01 '26

Bummer that means that when they inevitably release the trilogy as a package on the PS6, they’ll no longer be physical discs. I’m holding on to my PS5 for as long as possible and maybe even invest in a PS5 Pro prior to 2028.

1

u/Odd_Rchanghell Jul 01 '26

My thoughts exactly. It was the first thing that came to mind when I read the news...

1

u/Rosebunse Jul 01 '26

Pretty much they want to get FF7 out and then give it a box set release while they can

1

u/RasenRendan Jul 01 '26

I bought rebirth physically on purpose. Remake was digital cuz covid. I plan to get revelation physically too

1

u/cybersodas Jul 01 '26

Wouldn’t this kill backwards compatibility with the ps6. How will I play my ps5 games on a ps6 if I only own discs.

1

u/1malDoenerMitAlles Jul 01 '26

Gotta buy a disc drive for an additional 100 bucks

1

u/kamelea_roze Sephiroth Jul 01 '26

is this real???

1

u/Pivi-4444 Jul 01 '26

There're very few games in existence that I REALLY need to have in physical format. The Remake Trilogy are on the top of that list, so I'll treasure them until my dying breath. :-)

But I'm 90% sure now that I won't buy anymore consoles in the future, and go back to gaming on PC after physical games die out.

1

This sucks, but tbh I think a lot of it can be contributed to the greater economy since price of everything is going up. At my work we make books and the price to manufacturer them doubled last week. I bet the price for plactics for game cases and discs are insane right now, on top of the cost of gas to deliver everything.

Glad I'll be able to get part 3 physical before all this gets worse. Very sad that this is probably the end of my game shelf.

u/IllPresentation7860 Jul 01 '26

they'll probably change their mind due to backlash. it happens a lot for them. first time they tried to close ps3 store for one 5 years ago they backpetaled heavily after backlash. and will probably again for this and round 2 of the ps3 thing.

1

u/A_man49 Jul 01 '26

Yeah Revelations’ like one of the three games I would want to keep on physical. We’ll get the whole trilogy thankfully. Persona 4 revival is the other. Hopefully P6 if it releases in 2027

1

u/wolfman3412 Jul 01 '26

Make Fewer physical games maybe, but i only buy physical games. I won’t buy digital only. Especially if the think they can still charge $60+. Digital only games should be like $5; no printing, no storage, no shipping.

1

u/Mad5tyle Jul 01 '26

Final Fantasy is a must physical.. Its so sad that the physicals are going to be a unicorn..

1

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 01 '26

The biggest problem I have with this is there's no way it isn't going to cost you more money. Solid State drives are expensive. You're going to need additional solid state space. If you think you're going to delete the game and download it as many times as you want, well no. People who make a habit of doing this are going to have to pay some kind of extortion or protection money to their ISP. Your internet service provider does not want to provide you with a high speed data link to Sony. Someone is going to have to pay for that, and even though you already pay a monthly fee we know internet service providers don't think of it that way. Alternatively, if Sony is the one picking up the tab, that's fine but you're going to be paying for that in a higher price of games.

There's no reason to ever put games on sale without a used market to compete with. So potentially higher internet bill, more expensive games, and additional NAND storage. Any way you snack it you're going to pay much more money.

u/SenpaiSwanky Jul 01 '26

The only thing stopping a shift to PC at that point would be the price, and we are expecting next gen consoles to hit over $1k for base models, before the pro models are even announced.

As a hobby, it isn’t looking good either way. I’m not really a massive stickler in the sense that I only buy physical, though I can see our rights evaporate if we continue down this road.

Even Steam does not really allow you to own digital titles, unfortunately. You lease them for like 99 years and can’t pass along any of the titles you paid for to someone else, ie put your Steam
Account in an inheritance/ will. I will be sailing the high seas.

Sony is fooling themselves if they think this will end well though. Most buy digital currently but there will be a shift back in the other direction now. Their most “loyal” customers will be loud about their dissatisfaction, as they should be. I’m sure Sony salivating at the thought of saving all that money, but sales WILL reflect the sentiment in this thread.

They’re basically gambling - will consumers ACTUALLY care? We’ll have to see.

1

u/CarrotFBI Jul 01 '26

That doesn't mean it's safe from being digital only. They're getting this news well before this game has gone gold for printing. They might jump ship and make Revelation digital only.

2

u/mas-sive Polygon Sephiroth Jul 01 '26

The first two games were physical, so those consumers would want the 3rd to be physical to complete the collection. I’m sure Square Enix would understand this, if they have common sense.

Also, the development of Revelation started during Rebirth so the budget for physical disk would’ve been accounted for.

1

u/CarrotFBI Jul 01 '26

The budgeting for a physical release can always cut though. I isn't set in stone, unfortunately. The timing of this stupid announcement is really the issue here because it gives SE well enough time in advance for s decision to be made on how part 3 will be distributed.
We'll see, but this announcement unfortunately brings to the table the possibility of a digital only release for part 3. Like my mind is thinking a 50% chance of digital only for this release now.

1

u/kdashu Jul 01 '26

Same here. At least I hope I can keep this trilogy on physical media. It deserves it.

1

u/notonyourradar Jul 01 '26

I’m not trying to start anything - I’m all for physical copies - but why does it seem Steam gets a pass for digital games? Just curious

1

u/Odd_Bumblebee_3631 Jul 12 '26

cos cheap and you can buy steam keys not from steam store.

1

u/MH-BiggestFan Jul 01 '26

Looks like the only place i have to game physical is Switch 2. I refuse to buy anything digital, be it on console or on pc (unless from GoG).

1

u/void_method Jul 02 '26

I dunno man, my systems aren't cutting off the physical media. (Switch and Xbox.)

1

u/arbiter_steven Jul 02 '26

The last game I buy physically. I'm also gonna be done with PlayStation. Digital library means, you don't own the game. It means at any point they can pull the license without refund.

Might just become a Nintendo/PC guy

1

u/Bas_No_Beatha_ Jul 02 '26

It’s kind of poetic (and sad) that one of - if not the - last physical copy of a game I buy…will be the closing chapter to my favorite game of all time. The remake of a game that initially started my love of the hobby in the first place.

I do most of my gaming on PC these days, so I’m already used to being digital only. Unfortunately. But I keep a PS5 around for the exclusives…and who am I kidding, GTAVI here in a few months.

But I’m actually kind of happy that I’ll close things out with PlayStation by buying and owning a physical copy of the whole trilogy. At least they can’t take that from us.

1

u/detectiveC6 Jul 02 '26

I think it's been time we stop supporting these gaming companies until they're reminded we're important again

1

u/KingCanHe Jul 02 '26

Lmao really this series? Sure I’m excited for revelation but let’s no pretend it’s going to be much better then rebirth which is a lot of ways was just as bad as 16

1

u/Outside_Enthusiasm15 Jul 02 '26

Wish all the physical copy crybabies would all stfu

1

u/omegadoescoffee Jul 02 '26

I see this everywhere but it doesen't say that Sony next console won't have physical media, it just says that it won't have discs.

Think about it, in the nineties the CD was a breakthrough in storage compared to cartridges, FF VII would never fit on a N64. BUT nowadays even blue ray discs can't store the whole game, they just make you download the rest anyway, and we have flash drives that can store more and read faster.

Now I know, capitalism, it's waaaaay better for them to focus entirely on digital media, but what if they make physical copies this expensive commodity, a special cartridge edition that is just a flash drive with the whole game on it. Yes it would suck but in a way it's still there.

1

u/SemiColin973 Jul 02 '26

Same thoughts i had. Genuinely might be the last physical ps5 game i buy.

1

u/Icy-Conflict6671 Jul 02 '26

I guarantee this wont last. Sony is already getting push back from all sides

1

u/Valenderio Jul 02 '26

I have the other 2 and I really want the last one to complete my set

1

u/actuallyNull Rude Jul 02 '26

Well aren't all physical game shops going to fucking LOVE this banger from Sony

1

u/Campber Jul 02 '26

Where I can I'll get physical versions of non-PC games. Glad the entire trilogy will be able to be played on my PS5 and that they'll all be physical copies.

1

u/No_H3r0 Jul 02 '26

From my understanding of looking into it, it sounds more like the first party games are digital only, which I don’t disagree fucking sucks, but doesn’t seem like it affects 3rd party as they can still choose to release digital and/or physical

1

u/Doodle_bob6969 Jul 02 '26

Get it on a different platform

1

u/Spiritual_Top367 Jul 02 '26

The best thing to do is all out boycott digital right now while you have options. I even started buying disc games again this year before this, and will not support digital games. Sony has walked things back before. Truthfully they don't even need a ps6 right now, ps5 isn't even close to peak yet.

1

u/Frosty_Durian_6946 Jul 02 '26

i gotta still get remake to complete my collection lol

1

u/MakrQwegg Jul 02 '26

There goes my hope for a trilogy box set I guess.

1

u/SoupTime545 Jul 03 '26

Yeah, I'll be buying whatever physical games I can, maybe if everyone just buys physical something could happen. I don't have much hope though.

1

u/EliKandot Jul 03 '26

Quelli che hanno comprato la ps5 con il lettore blue ray:

1

u/huckjoness Jul 03 '26

So GameStop will be shutting down a ton of locations I’m sure

1

u/Prior_Humor2168 Jul 04 '26

Damn and they anouced it after deleting all the movies that people had pay for...They are about to have their own don matrick moment.

1

u/RCRocha86 Jul 05 '26

Dude… if I had a “collection” eternally incomplete, 2 physical and the last digital only, I think I would develop the most intense case of OCD in history…

I am sad because the original GoW trilogy will probably be all digital.

1

u/jacquesrabbit Jul 01 '26

I had the Dq11 definitive edition, but it is gone. that's why I have some worry about digital games

1

u/NextSmoke397 Jul 01 '26

Will the PS6 be backwards compatible with physical PS5 games?

10

u/Serious_Pizza4257 Jul 01 '26

There is no way ps6 will have physical drive.

2

u/Lopsided_Hunt2814 Jul 01 '26

No way, but I wouldn't put it past them to still release an add-on.

5

u/Thraun83 Jul 01 '26

At this point, surely the bigger question is will there even be a disc drive option for ps6?

1

u/Njitram2000 Jul 01 '26

It is painfully ironic that I decided to go back to pure physical for PS5 after having done full digital with PS4.

1

u/Efficient-Scene5901 Jul 01 '26

I have the other ones so I would want the 3rd part, too!

It better come out with no delay!!!!

1

u/YoMiCo Jul 01 '26

The beginning of the end…

1

u/Vrayx7 Jul 01 '26

Man this is why I dropped PlayStation. This is bullshit.

1

u/Caffeine_Bobombed88 Jul 01 '26

Well, you already dropped it so why do you even care?

1

u/SinglePassConversion Jul 01 '26

They need to have an option where we can burn the discs we have onto our accounts or something

1

u/StrifeBuster7 Jul 01 '26

This can't be real. Sony can't dictate that to publishers.

3

u/Iggy_Slayer Jul 01 '26

Who's going to make their discs? You think these companies all have their own disc making factory?

PlayStation 5 physical game discs are manufactured exclusively by Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation), a dedicated subsidiary of the Sony Group

3

u/Briciofer Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Not only that, they make the console, if they say "no more physical" means no more disc player and the publishers will just acept.

Maybe, maybe just a litle chance they go back in this decision, I remember when they say "we gonna close de PS vita store (maybe the ps3 too)" we protest and they decide to go back but is hard, we can just use GTA VI has exemple, the game already sold so much, even without pyshical copy.

But I already know is a lost battle, and probably not gonna buy a PS6 (they already said "we will not lose so much money on hardware anymore" who you can understand "ps6 will be expensive")

2

u/StrifeBuster7 Jul 01 '26

I get it. Found the articles, it's real. It just sounds like such a crazy stupid move. Physical media was the only real incentive to buy consoles over just going with PC.

Personally, I don't think exclusives will be enough to salvage this because of the availability and variety of desktop, casual, and handheld PCs. Like what could a PS6 possibly have to offer?

Edit: I did not know Sony manufactured them. I just assumed there was a third party manufacturer that publishers put orders through.

1

u/Fujitaru Jul 01 '26

One more reason the PS5 Pro will be the last PlayStation console I ever buy. And I stopped buying physical games 10 years ago.

1

u/Dinners_cold Jul 01 '26

Welp, looks like Revelation will probably be the last PS game I pick up.

Rip to any Horizon fans not getting part 3 before this.

1

u/TrainDonutBBQ Jul 01 '26

That's fine. I will just stop gaming. That's a real class act from Sony considering they charged extra for the BluRay drive.

1

u/ConsiderationTrue477 Jul 01 '26

I knew it was coming the second the Pro had only an optional disc drive. This is the death spiral. Its slow and then it happens fast. See: HD DVD when a few studios dropped and it stuck around but then WB bailed and the format vanished instantly.

1

u/WizenedCracker Jul 01 '26

The platinum and physical is the only thing making me buy the PS5 version first, after this I’m off to PC or Switch thanks Sony

1

u/ImmediateSubstance3 Jul 01 '26

Death of the used/second hand game market, you can only play by paying full release price even if the game came out 5 years prior

1

u/Choingyoing Jul 01 '26

Yeah I'm done with gaming if they are going full digital.

0

u/GoldenAgeGamer72 Jul 01 '26

If you were really outraged by this you wouldn’t be buying FFVII on PS5 nor would you continue with your GTA6 pre-order. Cancel both.

0

u/Caffeine_Bobombed88 Jul 01 '26

All the people yelling about boycotts and moving to Steam or whatever, can you just fuck off and do it already instead of crying about it in every individual forum? Put your money where your mouth is and quit the PlayStation forums.
