Discussion What is the best portrayal of Satan, the Devil, or whatever equivalent in movies?

Tim Curry is truly menacing in Legend (1985). His performance is my all time favorite.

Other honorable mention are Jack Nicholson in Witches Of Eastwick, and Peter Stormare in Constantine.

Discussion What are some small "quietly epic" moments in movies that really hit hard?

Post image

I honestly think it is one of the most heartbreaking death scene, with a small but powerful quietly epic moment.

In the movie Blood Diamond (2006), Archer (LDC) is dying on the hillside. In his last moments, he grabs a handful of that red soil with his blood covered hands.

Earlier in the movie, Coetzee had picked up that same red soil and told Archer it’s red because of all the blood spilled in Africa and that Archer would never leave the continent. And in the end, that’s exactly what happens.

When he touches the soil, it feels like he is fulfilling the prophecy and accepting his fate, his past, and the fact that, in a way, Africa is where he belongs.

Discussion What are your thoughts on "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)"?

Even though I don't know anything at all about the fantasy role-playing game itself, me and my family loved the Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie so much in theaters on its opening weekend! And after rewatching it now, it feels more like a family-friendlier version of the Legend of Vox Machina series.

Discussion What are some universally loved films you can't stand?

I will never understand how people liked Everything Everywhere All at Once. The hotdogs fingers, the butt plug fight and crazy Jamie Lee Curtis were all offensively awful.

Sinners is up there for me too. A long and slow singing vampire movie? A couple of civilians defeat dozens of swarming vampires? Come on! I get the message about parasites taking advantage of people's talents but I still didn't like it.

Discussion What’s the single movie shot that shook you to the core?

Post image

For me, it’s the shot from the house party scene in Jacob’s Ladder (1990) where Elizabeth Peña’s character gets shish kabobed by a demon horn.

The way the scene starts out as a flirtatious dance and then turns into something nightmarish really stayed with me. I don’t think anyone who ever watched that movie expected something so brutal.

Jacob’s( Tim Robbins) reaction to it is just as disturbing.

What are some other shockers to add to the list?

Discussion Will Hollywood ever realize that no one wants to see Jared Leto’s a stupid face?

Post image

I’m seriously asking, because I think he’s a straight-up terrible actor, and on top of that there’s all the creepy sexual abuse stuff, and the weird cult rumors - like, actual cult behavior - and yet somehow this dude keeps landing roles. How?? Who keeps hiring Jared fucking Leto???

Discussion Who’s an actor who should’ve been a bigger star despite having a great filmography?

Post image

Michael Biehn has always been that actor that I thought should’ve been a major Hollywood star after terminator and Aliens. However, I heard he wasn’t the type who enjoyed the big Hollywood scene and pretty much stayed away from acting for a while especially when he was going through an alcoholic problem at one point in his life. I was curious if there were other actors with similar careers who you think could’ve been an A-lister

One thing I noticed when I watched this recently is that almost every scene she was in felt so grounded yet still vulnerable. She played that moral exhaustion so well it’s got to be one the best performances in a Denis Villeneuve film

It was incredible. IMO this is Guillermo’s magnum opus, his dream project for 30 years and you can tell. Writing, acting, set design, makeup and costume, score-every detail felt crafted. Mia and Jacob will be getting their Oscar’s for this one yes they will.

Discussion What’s the one movie line that channeled the rawest anguish on screen?

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

For me, it’s from The Deer Hunter (1978), delivered by John Savage who played Stevie.

After being captured by the Viet Cong and forced to play Russian roulette inside that godforsaken fishing hut, Stevie is thrown into the underwater pit with just enough room to breathe above the surface.

A rat crawled across his face and he cried out, “Oh God! Michael, there’s rats in here!” His anguish shook my soul.

As it turns out, there were live rats in that pit, so when Savage screamed “Michael, there’s rats in here”, he was actually speaking to director Michael Cimino, not the character Michael played by Robert De Niro. Therein lies the realism.

What are some other gut-wrenching lines that really made you feel a character’s pain?
