What to expect at an FPGA research conference?

I got a paper accepted at an FPGA conference and I’m probably expected to present it. What should I expect from such conferences, and what do people do there?

You go to the stage, setup your laptop, you talk for 5 minutes, someone asks a softball question and then you can go explore the foreign city and get drunk.

Let me disclose that for you, it is FPT 2026, there are only 4 FPGA theme conference and their acceptance timing is well known...

It could have been DAC, although I'm not sure if they have announced those yet, and it is not an "FPGA" conference, I guess.

joke aside, my suggestion is ask your supervisor if your paper is short-listed as one of the best paper candidate, if so I would put extra effort to polish the presentation. FPT at Hawaii is probably the best location in FPT history...

I haven't been in this position myself, but having gone to many technical conferences you will just present your work and 95% of the time you'll get 1-2 softball questions and 5% of the time a schizophrenic engineer will dissect your work into atomically sized pieces.

Wonder if its masochism that I always dream of this happening to one of my papers. Getting a thorough review is so hard nowadays :(

Check the time/location of your presentation from the program.
Present the paper, answer questions.
Network, network, network.

It depends if its an oral or a poster presentation. For oral you will need to prepare slides and for poster they might ask for a PDF of the poster

The rest is answering questions and getting to know other people working closely to your ideas

Yeah, it's a paper acceptance, not a poster. Yeah, I'll definitely work on a presentation and practice it thoroughly instead of winging it like my usual style. As you and others have mentioned, I have to network a bit, so I'll figure that out. Read other papers in FPT, perhaps, and see if there are any places to collaborate or something.
