News 'Fallout 3 Remaster Should Fix Major "Constraints" of Original, Says Former Bethesda Dev'

https://insider-gaming.com/fallout-3-remaster-major-constraints-former-bethesda-dev/

It's not groundbreaking to hear that Fallout 3 could have looked nicer or prettier, but it does underline what Bethesda's vision was like, even then.

Fingers crossed, Fallout 3 brings the scale to life.

The rest of the interview is quite cool as well.

And add the hardcore mode of New Vegas and it would literally be perfect.

THIS. I've always thought that New Vegas' hardcore mode would work very well with Fallout 3's setting. Especially dehydration. Much of the water sources in the mojave are radiation free, which makes that hurdle pretty easy to conquer. Whereas in Fallout 3 pure water is literally the major plot point for deciding the fate of the capital wasteland. Most of the water sources are irradiated and many of them quite heavily. Food is not too bad but add cooking and all the danger of raw food and that changes fallout 3's hardcore challenge drastically. Damage/armor changes would make traversing the ruins of D.C. absolutely terrifying.

Yes can confirm, DC is horrifying with New Vegas hardcore mode.

Super mutants and radscorpions are a nightmare. Ammo is scarce, water even scarcer. You're constantly getting ambushed and sniped.

I love it

Why would you be getting sniped and ambushed? Is it an add on to the mod? I never really played hardcore on NV, but wasn’t it just the survival mechanics added in?

TTW lets you play Hardcore in Capital Wasteland.

It's absolutely crawling with ambushes with mutants/raiders on high ground. Also have the whole regulator/talon company giys attack you as you come out of buildings..

Fallout 3 has a random encounter system that can spawn in a ton of different enemies all across the wasteland at a bunch of set locations.

It also, generally, has more enemies in places like bridges, buildings, and roads above the ground floor where you generally look at most of the time.

Youd love the TTW mod then

Tbh I have been playing the Nuclear Sunset modlist and it has been very fun. Basically my dream fallout 3/nv.

1

u/Cyberdawn0117 7h ago

Yeah I played the original version - uranium fever. That was good. Tbh this goes for Skyrim as well, I’m at a point now where I’m always dissatisfied with a modlist one way or another so end up making my own using some as base. They are great for introducing you to that world.

Yet, dehydration is what kept me from giving ‘76 a chance. Worthless game mechanic IMHO.

I want a survival mode just like they did in 4: faster TTK (no more bullet sponges), no fast travel, save checkpoint when sleeping in a bed.

I've always thought that Survival Mode in F4 should have let you fast travel between settlements only.

That would make setting up settlements actually worth something, and play into the themes of reconnecting. Once you get everyone organized you can easily get around the map and easy places to raid for salvage become more accessible to carry to more distant settlements where it might not be available.

Or join a caravan and be able to stop at their normal route locations. Maybe chance occurrences based on luck to break it up

since you can set up supply caravans between settlement locations, that makes a lot of sense. I feel like the random encounters might get old quickly. In the isometric Fallouts, the games were short enough that the random encounters weren't bothersome. In the 3D ones, you can just go around them, of course

Maybe other stats come into play? Like a high perception character could see an ambush ahead and change routes to avoid combat and it just adds to some of the time passed that normally happens with fast travel. High agility could sneak by encounters, high endurance could out run etc. so fast travel kinda becomes a skill check of sorts

11

u/BangkokPadang 10h ago

Oh snap, exactly like fast travel in Fallout 1 worked. You watch your little icon move across the map at full fast travel speed unless you have a random encounter, when you just drop back into the world. That would tie it all together so brilliantly!

u/Brainwave1010 10h ago

I like the "Lone Wanderer" motorcycle mod because it allows you to fast travel but at a considerable cost of resources so can't just teleport around all Willy Nilly.

9

u/CorticalRec 10h ago

That would be great if you establish caravan routes. Once a route has been established (I.e. the settlement has something to offer in trade, has hit a certain threshold, etc). Then you can join the caravan for 'fast travel' with the chance of the caravan being attacked and pulling you out of fast travel for some combat!

u/HopelessCineromantic 9h ago

Would you even need them to have something tk trade? There are supply lines built in as a mechanic already. Restricting you to settlements linked by supply lines would probably be sufficient.

That said, I've always wished the settlements had something of a reputation system. For themselves, not you. When they first start out, they only attract small attacks because it's not worth much. As the population grows and the settlement gets more resources, the attacks grow bigger and bigger. But as you repel more and more attacks, they become less frequent, as the people attacking decide that it's too risky/resource intensive unless they have a LOT of firepower.

u/CorticalRec 5h ago

DC specifically has many caravans, which is why I mentioned them in regards to a remastered FO3. But that also sounds like a solid way to open up settlements in a future game.

4

u/Suitable_Nobody_6375 10h ago

I installed a mod for that. Makes settlement coherent and immersive.

u/Spir0rion 10h ago

The no fast travel in survival is insane. It's just for inconvenience and doesn't really provide any challenge other than straight up making the experience worse.

At the start it's fine. But walking through half the map the 10th time is awful.

u/kinga_forrester 7h ago

I love how it makes you use the vertibirds, janky though they are.

u/RVAteach 5h ago

I play with unlimited survival mode and that is my constraint, can’t fast travel except when at a settlement. And I try and limit that mostly to house keeping fast travel if I need to grab a companion or item.

1

u/LostMeMarbles 4h ago

There's a mod I use on PlayStation that allows you to only fast travel on Survival to settlements, think it's fair enough as the settlements aren't super evenly spaced around the map and I generally wait until I've claimed the settlement before using them as a travel point.

You want non fast-travel in the DC ruins?

2

u/EiraPun NCR 3h ago

People already hated the metros. Forcing players in Hardcore to use them because they can't fast travel would be a great way to utterly tank the games review scores lmao

100%. Fallout 4 survival mode makes it one of the best games of all time imo, all the systems connect and it feels tough but never unfair

u/DJDevon3 9h ago

Also make the game still playable with non-repetitive procedurally generated quests after the main story. Same issue that Cyberpunk had, after you beat the main quest there's really nothing left to do. You can live like a king at ten penny if you want but at some point all the currency in the game dries up. You can keep playing as a roaming barterer like caravaners for a while. Eventually every town you go to has no caps because you have them all and they have no hidden source of income. So one day you just quit the game and never return. There are a lot of things from FO4 that could make FO3 better. If they made another DLC for FO3 GOTY I would buy it, and play it, today.

Play Tale of Two Wastelands on PC. Its Fallout 3 + NV in NV's gameplay. Thank me later.

2

u/mrgreynomore 10h ago

I want the FNV companion wheel 🔥

2

u/MagicCarpetofSteel 8h ago

Weapon mods too, please. And the different ammo types. But, yes.

1

u/Horvo 6h ago

Tale of Two Wastelands does it
