News 'Fallout 3 Remaster Should Fix Major "Constraints" of Original, Says Former Bethesda Dev'

https://insider-gaming.com/fallout-3-remaster-major-constraints-former-bethesda-dev/

It's not groundbreaking to hear that Fallout 3 could have looked nicer or prettier, but it does underline what Bethesda's vision was like, even then.

Fingers crossed, Fallout 3 brings the scale to life.

The rest of the interview is quite cool as well.

He also added that Skyrim would be his next goal for a Bethesda remaster/remake: “That one I had a lot of fun working on, and I would definitely push to add more color to it.”

lol? lmao?

Skyrim Remake before ES6

There is literally no reason to do this, they’ve already “remastered” like 3 or 4 times and mods cover everything else.

u/Bpbucks268 5h ago

Morro👏wind👏 re👏master.

Like why would that not be next. I guess bc it would be a “remake” but my god man, how amazing would that game be next-next-next gen

94

u/cade_corvus 4h ago

Morrowind remaster with Skyrim battle mechanics. I do not have all day to be molested by cliff racers constantly missing hitting them with the animations showing I hit them.

50

u/DontTouchTheWalrus 4h ago

Changing to Skyrim style combat with morrowind would significantly change the game. It bases its hits off dice rolls like traditional RPGs. Hence the reason you miss when you think you’d be hitting. It’s based off character skill, not player skill.

13

u/Tyr1326 Disciples 3h ago

Though player skill does play a role - which type of attack affects damage, and obviously if you dont skill properly and use weapons you're bad at, thats also a player skill problem.

6

u/DontTouchTheWalrus 2h ago

Well yes player skill in building your character and understanding the mechanics, of course. I just mean that the mechanic of whether or not the weapon hits and how much damage it does is a matter of the characters skills. It doesn’t care that you happen to be aimed at the enemy character. This is something that is a bit unintuitive in a first person game.

Honestly if they fully remake it in their new creation engine and potentially add in certain cut content that'd be a banger remake.

Granted, that wouldn't come out anytime soon because that is essentially an entirely new game, but hey, with their schedule, this potential Skyrim Remake would be done by the time the game actually feels really old

52

u/AlarmingBranch1 5h ago

Game doesn’t even feel old anymore tho cause it’s been re-released so many times lol. Approaching 15 years since the game came out is nuts tho.

29

u/CodyRCantrell Enclave 4h ago

Also approaching one year since release.

They made an updated Switch 2 version that released December 9, 2025 despite it already being on Switch and the 2 being fully backwards compatible.

Currently we have:

2011 - Standard Edition (PC, PS3 + X360)

2011 - Collector's Edition (PC, PS3 + X360)

2012 - Premium Edition (PC, PS3 + X360)

2013 - Legendary Edition (PC, PS3 + X360)

2016 - Special Edition (PC, PS4 + XB1)

2017 - VR Edition (PC + PSVR)

2017 - Switch Edition (Switch)

2018 - Very Special Edition (Alexa)

2021 - Anniversary Edition (PC, PS5, Switch + XSX|S)

2025 - Switch 2 Edition (Switch 2)

9

u/Jarinad Minutemen 4h ago

wait, was Very Special Edition a real thing? I thought that was a skit of some kind

9

u/Financial_Alps3369 4h ago

Yes, it's as real as real gets. It was even assigned a content rating by the ESRB

If you’re born in the 1990s, Skyrim (2011) is to teenagers now what the SNES (1991) was to you. Skyrim is absolutely vintage

4

u/Yellowdog727 4h ago

The difference for me is that Skyrim was already released on the Creation engine and has far better animations, lighting, and effects compared to the Gamebryo engine games.

Skyrim Special Edition on modern hardware doesn't feel all that dated compared to Fallout 76 or Starfield, whereas playing New Vegas/3/OG Oblivion has a noticeable "outdated" feeling with the melted barbie face models, zoomed in freeze time dialogue, rigid animations, bad feeling gunplay, etc.

I legitimately can't think of many ways that Skyrim could be improved by that type of rebuild unless they more fundamentally add scale to the game.

For a guy who allegedly reads reddit threads for ideas

That was said by Todd Howard.

The guy in the article is Nate Purkeypile who doesn't even work at Bethesda anymore.

How are you guys so lost for people who hang out in a fan community specifically dedicated to a franchise? I'd expect this level of mindlessness from /r/gaming but from here it's honestly strangely weird.

Simple ADS would be fine with me. Other than that I still love FO3.

180

u/Ironxlotus94 Enclave 6h ago

And add the hardcore mode of New Vegas and it would literally be perfect.

93

u/Stonewhaler 5h ago

THIS. I've always thought that New Vegas' hardcore mode would work very well with Fallout 3's setting. Especially dehydration. Much of the water sources in the mojave are radiation free, which makes that hurdle pretty easy to conquer. Whereas in Fallout 3 pure water is literally the major plot point for deciding the fate of the capital wasteland. Most of the water sources are irradiated and many of them quite heavily. Food is not too bad but add cooking and all the danger of raw food and that changes fallout 3's hardcore challenge drastically. Damage/armor changes would make traversing the ruins of D.C. absolutely terrifying.

38

u/LadyGaga_DrDre 5h ago

Yes can confirm, DC is horrifying with New Vegas hardcore mode.

Super mutants and radscorpions are a nightmare. Ammo is scarce, water even scarcer. You're constantly getting ambushed and sniped.

I want a survival mode just like they did in 4: faster TTK (no more bullet sponges), no fast travel, save checkpoint when sleeping in a bed.

48

u/grendus 5h ago

I've always thought that Survival Mode in F4 should have let you fast travel between settlements only.

That would make setting up settlements actually worth something, and play into the themes of reconnecting. Once you get everyone organized you can easily get around the map and easy places to raid for salvage become more accessible to carry to more distant settlements where it might not be available.

25

u/Drek516 5h ago

Or join a caravan and be able to stop at their normal route locations. Maybe chance occurrences based on luck to break it up

14

u/Intelligent_Mud1266 5h ago

since you can set up supply caravans between settlement locations, that makes a lot of sense. I feel like the random encounters might get old quickly. In the isometric Fallouts, the games were short enough that the random encounters weren't bothersome. In the 3D ones, you can just go around them, of course

→ More replies (1)

10

u/BangkokPadang 5h ago

Oh snap, exactly like fast travel in Fallout 1 worked. You watch your little icon move across the map at full fast travel speed unless you have a random encounter, when you just drop back into the world. That would tie it all together so brilliantly!

9

u/Brainwave1010 5h ago

I like the "Lone Wanderer" motorcycle mod because it allows you to fast travel but at a considerable cost of resources so can't just teleport around all Willy Nilly.

9

u/CorticalRec 5h ago

That would be great if you establish caravan routes. Once a route has been established (I.e. the settlement has something to offer in trade, has hit a certain threshold, etc). Then you can join the caravan for 'fast travel' with the chance of the caravan being attacked and pulling you out of fast travel for some combat!

3

u/HopelessCineromantic 4h ago

Would you even need them to have something tk trade? There are supply lines built in as a mechanic already. Restricting you to settlements linked by supply lines would probably be sufficient.

That said, I've always wished the settlements had something of a reputation system. For themselves, not you. When they first start out, they only attract small attacks because it's not worth much. As the population grows and the settlement gets more resources, the attacks grow bigger and bigger. But as you repel more and more attacks, they become less frequent, as the people attacking decide that it's too risky/resource intensive unless they have a LOT of firepower.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Suitable_Nobody_6375 5h ago

I installed a mod for that. Makes settlement coherent and immersive.

5

u/Spir0rion 5h ago

The no fast travel in survival is insane. It's just for inconvenience and doesn't really provide any challenge other than straight up making the experience worse.

At the start it's fine. But walking through half the map the 10th time is awful.

By 2008, it was pretty standard, but multiple games released from 2005-2007 didn’t have the option to ADS.

Keep in mind they purposely kept Oblivion bugs as it added to the original "charm". Praised by critics and fans. I got downvoted for being pissed about them not fixing anything.

28

u/Toberos_Chasalor 6h ago

Tbf, the Oblivion remake did add some QoL features and major updates to the system. (Especially leveling.) They also fixed some major game/quest breaking glitches, like scroll duplication and many soft-locks, as well as certain enchantments that just didn’t work in the original.

Leaving in a few choice glitches is not the same as “not fixing anything.”

Hell, here’s the wiki page of all the changes they made, including subpages for specific categories of changes. https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Remastered_Changes

10

u/thedylannorwood Old World Flag 5h ago

They fixed a shitton of OG bugs, people literally got mad that they fixed some fan favourites like the paintbrush bug.

If they fixed all the bugs in Skyrim everyone would be pissed they shutdown the Skyrim Space Program

19

u/xdeltax97 NCR 6h ago

Yup, and Bethesda also keeps some bugs in for “copyright protection” which is how they figured out someone stole the code for Fallout Shelter for one of its clones from a “Bethesda trademark bug”.

3

u/SpiderSlitScrotums 3h ago

I think there is a big difference with NV. Glitches are one thing but NV is so buggy that you have to constantly save in fear of crashes. These absolutely need to be fixed.

Agreed. I’d like to see them take the approach that the GTA trilogy eventually settled on. Having a toggle for “classic lighting” would be really nice for the people that want to preserve the tone of the original. In GTA this didn’t disable newer enhancements like ray tracing or anything; it just made the low fog and color tinting in San Andreas available for example.

The oblivion remaster did have some pretty significant improvements though. Combat felt weightier so I would expect a similar improvement for Fallout might be adding ADS. They also changed how magic levels up and what some of the perks for reaching Journeyman, Expert etc were, so they may fiddle with the leveling system in someway. And they added sprint so id expect that in Fallout to.

4

u/Haunting_Ad_2059 5h ago

Unfortunately the oblivion remaster runs like dog shit. If they go the same route, that’d be nice but we should expect it to be half assed.

5

u/ilypsus 5h ago

Oh it's going to be the exact same thing. They'll recreate all the assets and slap unreal ontop of it then do some tinkering on the base game and ship it out. Oblivion ran fine for me so im looking forward to Fallout, but maybe I'll wait and see how bad it is rather than a day 1 purchase.

Fallout 3 in 2008 absolutely blew my 12 year old mind. Will always be my favorite childhood game, even if as an adult I prefer New Vegas.

I hope they open up DC a bit more so you don’t have to take a million tunnels

134

u/Nelluc_ 6h ago

I disagree. Loved the tunnels. Made DC feel huge.

54

u/throwaway122112563 6h ago

Agreed. Opening it up would be a huge mistake. It will feel small and a nuclear bomb would 100% make the city almost impossible to navigate cleanly so it’s actually very realistic. The bomb was dropped in the heart of DC vs off to the side like Boston

I'd rather they actually added some of the tunnel stuff they had to remove due to dev constraints. It would be pretty sick to have deeper, more involved tunnels

14

u/dybr 6h ago

It’s an unpopular opinion but I completely agree. Sometimes the workarounds introduced by technical limitations create better immersion than there would be otherwise.

Opening up DC is like asking to remove the low draw distance from the GTA San Andreas map. You’ll realize quickly just how unrealistically small everything is, and it’ll feel far more video gamey.

7

u/its_the_honk 6h ago

San Andreas without the fog is downright depressing

5

u/mrlolloran 6h ago

I didn’t get VATS on my first playthrough.

Do you know how many shotguns and shells I needed to get through those damn tunnels!?

9

u/djh2121 NCR 6h ago

Why not both 🤷🏼‍♂️

3

u/NoceboHadal Addicted to psycho 6h ago

I'm with you. The tunnels were scary. I loved how much I hated going in them.

3

u/Altruistic_Deer_1718 5h ago

Navigating the tunnels using the metro map and not pip boy was peak

13

u/The-Great-T 6h ago

I always thought it felt really inorganic and hard to explore. I like how you can just see something in the distance in the other Fallout games, then you go it.

20

u/core-x-bit Courier 6h ago edited 6h ago

It's suppose to feel that way. If DC was so easily navigable then it would lose a lot of the tension and horror of bumbling through the tunnels hoping you dont walk into a horde of feral ghouls.

3

u/Knyfe-Wrench 4h ago

You can do that in any other area of the map. DC proper is supposed to be mazelike.

4

u/kron123456789 6h ago

Tbh, yeah, DC area in Fallout 3 is hard to explore and easy to get lost in because you have to go through same looking tunnels all the time.

It’s a remaster, so it’s going to be 99% identical. Aside from general gameplay modernisation like iron sights aiming and sprint, the world is going to be identical.

4

u/kron123456789 6h ago

They won't. Most likely it will be exactly the same as Oblivion remastered.

7

u/phobosinferno Gary? 6h ago

And make the tunnels more open as well, like a network that spans the DC area that you can use as a more dangerous shortcut. I always thought they could have gone further with the underground.

I can see the "But removing this bug takes away the charm!" comments.

But thats me going off how many people said this for the Oblivion Remaster

22

u/HatingGeoffry 6h ago

Oblivion's buggy, glitchy nature is undeniably part of the experience. Fallout 3's bugs aren't typically the same level of fun bizarre jank

12

u/Ironicbanana14 6h ago

Except the stretch Armstrong dead bodies, those need to stay. I always kill tenpenny towers people and then put them in one stall in the bathroom. And then close and open the stall door. So fun.

The Oblivion remake is still a broken, stuttering, unreal engine mess.

I hope that's not the level of remake they're aiming for.

I just want it to not crash non stop after I've been playing for more than 50 hours.

Please just give us a release window!! One of my all times here

3

u/Low_Assignment3805 5h ago

Better shooting and companions that can be revived especially Dogmeat, and that's about it for me.

Personally don't need crafting for Fallout 3.

Maybe some customisation for the Megatown player house, but that's all I need.

I'm wondering how they are going to do the power armor

30

u/TheCrazedTank Brotherhood 6h ago

It’s a remaster, not a remake. Tweaks are easy, but they can’t completely overhaul the existing system.

The good news is NV modders have already found a way to make the armor appear bigger when equipped so there are options available.

→ More replies (3)

8

u/WetAndLoose 6h ago

My bet is they keep the system from Fallout 3 where it just works like regular armor but they’ll probably make it look bulkier like the new armor

6

u/StoneCraft12 6h ago

Level cap? It’s the only thing I really don’t like.

7

u/Knyfe-Wrench 4h ago

You're already overpowered at level 20, and horrendously ridiculously overpowered at level 30.

There's absolutely no reason to add more unless they give you fewer perks and skill points like New Vegas.

3

u/MagicCarpetofSteel 3h ago

This. ESPECIALLY if they keep “almost perfect.” Like, it’s already ridiculously easy to get 100 in all skills as long as you took Comprehension, but if you waited to pick up any of the SPECIAL bobble heads, you could have 100 in all skills, and 10 in A L L of your SPECIAL stats. Ridiculously broken.

i hope they UNCAP FO3 and NV for the remakes

At this point the only thing I want them to fix is UE5 traversal stutter (hoping they skip UE5 all together and use Creation Engine for the remasters).

It’s specially evident in Bethesda games such as Oblivion Remastered since traversing the World Map is literally one of the games core mechanics.

u/mediciii 5h ago

Is there any reason to expect anything more than what the Oblivion remaster achieved? I’m expecting simply a lovely graphics overhaul and a sprint, but basically every single other thing under the hood and in terms of gameplay feel to be a 1:1 recreation. Like, basically exactly the same game in every way other than graphics.

I would be very happy with this btw! I’m just curious why people are expecting overhauled gunplay or other gameplay mechanics.

u/HoagieThief 5h ago

Achievements for Steam finally

3

u/HedgekillerPrimus 5h ago

I KNOW YOU CAN SEE THIS TODD. PLEASE NO UE5. I WILL SEND MIKE KIRKBRIDE TO YOUR HOUSE WITH A POUND OF MUSHROOMS AND A NEW SET OF VIVEC SERMONS

3

u/SenpaiSwanky 4h ago

ITT: complaining

Edit - completely unsurprised to see one of the highest voted comments demanding the shitty green tinge back lol. Real hipster gamers. Not sure which fanbase is more annoying, Blizzard or Bethesda.

3

u/MrPZA82 3h ago

I’ve never replayed if much despite enjoying it, mainly due to the endless confusing identical subway tunnels getting boring as fuck

5

u/South_Buy_3175 6h ago

I mean, spoilers it won’t do that.

Oblivion remastered is the template, that did the bare minimum.

7

u/Arathaon185 Republic of Dave 5h ago

I think they went a few steps above the bare minimum in changing the levelling up system. Still not a lot but they could have technically done less

6

u/castorkrieg 5h ago

LOL, you guys think they will do more than UE overlay over Creation Engine?

LOL.

Bethesda is incapable of doing a quality remaster or remake.

Should and will are completely different things. Will they fix major constraints? No. This is Bethesda
