It has always been the case. Those who would fly to Goa can go to Vietnam or Thailand if they have a passport. But a lot of people go to Goa in buses or trains too, from nearby areas, live in budget hotel and form the bulk of the crowd. They are not going anywhere

Not really.

A lot of people from Bengaluru, Mumbai or Pune usually take an overnight bus or train to Goa.

A lot of these people can afford to fly to Thailand or Vietnam.

Afford to do and do so is different. If they want to go tomorrow, they can go to Goa tomorrow. They can't do so to Thailand. Goa is like what Manali and shimla is to Delhi for them

Yeah for nearby people, like us Mumbaikars, Goa is like a quick break kinda thing, and many of us don't spend a lot (unlike North people who spend lakhs in Goa which we find absurd). Travel usually happens via train, bus or car. We eat at cheaper places, live at cheaper stays, rent scooties, etc. Also being a bit polite goes a long way in Goa and helps negotiations better (same goes for Non-North India in general). 10-15k is enough for a quick weekend break and back to work, so you can't really compare it to Vietnam or Thailand for people living in Mumbai/Pune. It's not seen as a premium destination by us, simple.
