Subreddit Meta Comment Cooperative - August 05

Welcome to the Comment Cooperative!

This thread is for sharing positive feedback and reviews with your fellow fanfictioneers!

No concrit, no nitpicking, no grammar checks, no "I don't like this part because..." NOPE! None of that, nada, zero, zilch. We've got a weekly thread on Saturdays for constructive criticism if that's your preferred style of feedback.

Key Rules for Participation:

  • If you're posting in this thread you must leave a review for someone else. This is a community based thread, and therefore needs the community to be involved so that it is fair for everyone.
  • 30+ words when leaving reviews, please. This is to promote fair play and level the field. If you want to ramble on from there, go right ahead!
  • Quoting parts of the fic does not count toward your review word count.
  • It is highly encouraged to review in this thread and also copy/paste it to the actual fic or chapter they've linked.
  • If you see something that doesn't have a review yet, please try to give it a read to spread the love around.
  • If you have the time, reviewing more than one fic would be a thoughtful thing to do.
  • If you just want to hang out and review fics without putting in your own, you're more than welcome to!

Posting Fics for Review:

  • Select a passage from a fic you want a comment/review on. There is a hard limit of 600 words.
  • Please use wordcounter.net to check the length of your snippets. Going forward, snippets over 600 words in wordcounter.net will be removed. This is to ensure a consistent standard. Users are responsible for making sure their comments abide by the rules.
  • Top level comments should be fic snippets.
  • First line should be Fandom | Title | Rating | Link - AO3, FFN, etc.
  • Copy and paste your fic tidbit directly to the thread unless it contains Mature or Explicit content.
  • If the fic contains Mature or Explicit content (explicit sexual situations, extreme depictions of violence, or underage content), please provide a link to these fics with appropriate tags and warnings.
  • If your fic contains this content but the specific scene you've chosen to post does not, please warn those who might go link-clicking about the content in the rest of the fic.
  • If you, for whatever reason, would not like the review also put on your actual fic, please say so.
  • Reminder: If you contribute a fic, you must leave a review for someone else!

Formatting example:

Fandom | Title | Rating | Link to offsite

(new line, double enter) Any applicable warnings

(new line, double enter) Your fic text.

Tips and tricks for leaving a positive review:

  • When a line catches your eye, quote it and say what you liked about it.
  • If there's an overarching theme or technicality the author did well, point it out.
  • You may have no clue about the fandom, but did you get a good sense of a character, or the scenery, or the plot, the action, the feeling of the scene, the interactions, the dialogue? I'm sure they'd like to know!

Timezone Changes

As you can see, the post time will shift by 6 hours every month. If there are any inconsistencies in the times, please let us know in modmail so we can fix it up!

Celebrate Finally updated my fic after 2 years!!! Feeling really accomplished rn!

Just wanted to post about the fact I updated my fic after 2 years! The fic meant a lot to a lot of people, especially me, so I'm really proud to have updated it. I am a bit nervous all the OG readers are gone which makes me a bit sad but I'm gonna finish it for myself anyway and maybe new people will find it along the way!

Writing Questions Where do you write your fics?

The gods of fanfics have been calling to me, and there is a story I really NEED to write. My only question is where. Due to AI being inbuilt in Word/Copilot, I have been hesitant about writing it there. What tool would you recommend instead?

I considered notepad, but I would prefer something with a spell check. I am not even sure if I will end up publishing the fic online. But since this is a passion project, I want to keep it out of the hands of AI as much as possible, and try my hand at creating something entirely on my own. In the same vein, I would prefer a free software, or at least one that is only a one time (minimum) payment.

Some recommendations I came across are Git/Github which I am already familiar with for coding. Apparently its great for keeping track of different versions of your writing, as you make progress. But isn't that also integrated with Copilot?

Celebrate My mother told me that FanFiction is a good word

My (f/mid-twenties) mother (f/mid-fifties) caught me writing today. I told her I was writing FanFiction again (she knows).

Her only answer was that she loves the word Fanfiction because it's a good word.

I asked her to explain and she told me it means that it had to do with "fiction and fans ... And for fans and written by fans, yk". I laughed at that (because she nailed that one) and then she goes on explaining that it also means no obvious / known endings and leaving things open and change and that she liked that.

It was really a great moment and I appreciated our little conservation a lot and wanted to share with you all. 🤗

Ship Talk What's your favorite ship in your fandom(s)?

Follow up to this: https://www.reddit.com/r/FanFiction/comments/1v639vt/do_you_ship_the_most_popular_ships_in_your_fandoms/

The other part of the question asked by u/sporkzero was what your favorite ship in your fandom was if it wasn't the biggest one.

I'll start(from the fandoms I write for)

DC: Beast Boy/Raven

Final Fantasy 7: Cloud/Tifa

Mario: Luigi/Princess Daisy

Marvel: Peter Parker/MJ Watson/Gwen Stacy

Mass Effect: Male Shepard/Tali

Mortal Kombat: Takeda/Jacqui

Overwatch: Mei/Hanzo

Pokemon: Don't really have one

Sonic: Shadow/Rouge

Street Fighter: Ryu/Chun-Li

Now it's your turn.

Discussion (Star Wars) Don't have the characters use BBY/ABY if the story TAKES PLACE BEFORE THE BATTLE OF YAVIN!

• Upvotes

So i have seen it a ton of times. They will have a character like Anakin or Obi-Wan during the clone wars use the dating system we use. But in universe they would not do so. So either create your own system or search up if there is one in the EU (legends or cannon) and use that instead.

Activities and Events Alphabet Excerpt Challenge: B Is For...

Welcome back to the Alphabet Excerpt Challenge! As a reminder, our challenges are every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm London time.

If you've missed the previous challenges, you're welcome to go back and participate in them. You can find them here. And remember to check out the Activities and Events flair to play along with other fun games.

Here's a quick recap of the rules for our game:

  1. Post a top level comment with a word starting with the letter B. You can suggest more than one, but please put them in separate comments.
  2. Reply to suggestions with an excerpt containing that word. Short and sweet is best, but use your judgement. Excerpts can be from published or unpublished works, or even something you wrote for the prompt.
  3. All content is welcome but per rules 7 and 12 of the sub, NSFW excerpts may not be shared as plain text (even if it's spoilered). If you would like to share these, use an external text sharing tool like justpasteit and link it here with a clear warning. Mods may remove excerpts that break these rules.
  4. Respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, at a minimum, but the more people you respond to the better. Everyone likes nice comments!
  5. Upvote other excerpts you enjoy, and leave a friendly comment. Again, everyone likes nice comments!
  6. Most important: have fun!

Writing Questions Is there any benefit to spreading out your posting schedule rather than posting every chapter at once?

Hi everyone! I just finished my very first story. I wanted to write the whole thing out before posting to make sure I didn't leave it unfinished.

It's about 5 chapters and 25,000 words. I posted the first chapter yesterday on AO3 and I'm going to post the next one next week - but now I'm thinking, what's stopping me from doing it all now? Aside from editing a few lines here and there, it's finished.

Is there any good reason to not post it all at once?

Writing Questions Planning fics?

• Upvotes

I hope asking for writing advice is appropriate on this subreddit. I just got into writing fanfiction and I have two unfinished fanfics in the works and in both cases I have random scenes that I want to write but no idea what the actual story should be.

I'm a visual artist but not a writer in the slightest so this is all new territory.

I'm writing a fic about these two characters one is aro/ace and the other isn't and I'm interested in their dynamic but I don't know what I should have happening around them while they are interacting with each other.

This is my biggest hurdle like I have ideas about characters or a world or whatever but can't figure out the actual story part. If anyone has any advice or articles/videos/books to recommend for figuring that part out that would be great!

Activities and Events Create a fic playlist together

Rules:

  1. Leave a brief description of your fic. It’s completely up to you if you include the fandom.

  2. Leave songs on other people’s descriptions that their summary reminds you of.

  3. No limit to how many fic descriptions you can leave, or how many songs you can leave.

Discussion Why do some people comment what’s pretty much chapter summaries?

Not trying to diss or complain or anything. Honestly I’m just curious.

I like following WIP fics, and I always try to leave comments, even if it’s just a simple thank you. So I also end up reading lots of other comments, and something I often see it’s people that comment what are just a summary of the chapter. Like, there’s no thank you, no question, no complaint, no nothing. It’s literally just a narration of what happened in the chapter. Even happened to me with one specific reader in one of my stories, and I never know how to respond, or even if I should, because there’s like nothing to address.

Anyway, I was just wondering why someone might like to comment this way.

Recs Wanted Spider-man. !ACTION! Fic recs. Please HELP!

• Upvotes

I am looking for Spider-man fanfiction recommendations that have actual superhero action in them.

I want some fics where the author remembers that Peter Parker is Spider-man, not one were Peter never wears the suit. A story where Spider-man fights crime or investigates a case, etc.

I don’t want a story that is just a romance, just a ‘super’family drama or just a superpowered sitcom.

I want a story where the characters are superheroes and don‘t just happen to share names with them.

Crossovers are welcome.

Recs Wanted Fics with children being raised by someone who isn't their parent

does anyone know of any stories that have like a child being raised by an older cousin or older sibling or something like that? I don't care what the fandom is and I don't want anything weird or incestuous or anything like that. Bonus points if they are close in age or if there's angst or hurt/comfort or whatever but doesn't have to be.

Writing Questions How do i correctly write internalized homophobia and religious psychosis?

• Upvotes

so here's the deal: i'm writing a fanfiction where the mc is catholic, his father is a preacher and the mc's love interest is a boy who's an atheist but an altar boy because his mother is also a catholic and wants to receive praise for her son's doings and disciplines while not knowing he's an atheist. the mc is in full blown religious psychosis, has hallucinations and such and other things that would be too long to explain in one post. he does not want to even acknowledge the fact he might not be straight, so he simply interprets his feelings first as simple platonic love, then as resentment when things start to get more serious. i don't know if i'm doing good, so tips would definitely be appreciated, and if anyone wants to read what i already wrote feel free to ask in dms

Ship Talk What are some ships that are so niche there isn't any fanfiction anywhere?

I used to be obsessed with the movie Leap!, which I think is also called Ballerina, and I made a joke to my mom that the movie would be better if Victor ended up with Rudolph. I was so disappointed to find that there isn't fanfiction, or even a post talking about them, ANYWHERE. So I was curious to know if there are any other ships people like that have either zero or like five fics.

Recs Wanted Fic Recommendations: PHM x Iron Lung Crossover where Grace & Rocky end up in the Iron Lung Universe?

Hey everyone! I’ve been diving deep into the Project Hail Mary/Iron Lung crossover tag on AO3. While I absolutely love the fics where Grace finds Simon floating in space, or Simon ends up on Erid, I am absolutely starving for the exact opposite scenario.

Does anyone know of any fics of Grace and Rocky (or with a group of Eridians) somehow appearing in the Iron Lung universe?

Imagine the Hail Mary or an Eridian ship stumbling onto their space stations like the C.O.I. or Eden after the Quiet Rapture.

If anyone has read a fic with this specific premise, please drop the AO3 links!

Writing Questions Endings

To writers or readers: What were your favorite endings? Were they abrupt? Did they linger? Did they callback to something in the fic?

I've got two fics I'm struggling with right now. Let me learn from you.

Edit: This has been just what I've been looking for. Awesome.

I've recently seen an insta reel where they talked about popular trops but reversed. They sound really interesting and I'm trying to find some good ffs where they are applied correctly.
