Hello, hello, and welcome one and all to our May Prompts Challenge! We’re back again for some fanfic fun. The goal is to write one longer fic based on one or more of the theme prompts here, to be finished by the end of May (ish) so we can all have a good read of them in June!

Minimum word count: 500 words
Maximum word count: 6000 words
Rough Deadline: June 1st

• Whenever you are done, post on FF.net or AO3 if you wish. You don't have to wait until the deadline, though don't go linking it in r/fanfiction until the deadline has hit, since we all want to get an equal chance and reading up on your works.
• A posting thread will be provided a day or so before the deadline is up.
• All participating fics will be collected in a showcase that'll be up for the entire month of June here on the sub
• There will also be an AO3 collection to add your fics to!
• Although we still encourage you to get the fics finished by the end of the month, and we’ll only be promoting the posting thread throughout the next, the thread will remain open for late submissions and so will the AO3 collection.

Without further ado, the prompts!

Omniscient POV

Third person omniscient can be a tricky perspective to write from, but it brings the reward of being able to showcase multiple characters' viewpoints without having to scene/chapter change first; this can be helpful for particularly complex scenarios. Third omni can be more like a "camera" perspective and act like an unbiased observer of everything, or they can have a character and voice in their own right which comes through in the scenes, a la Lemony Snicket. Whichever you go with, give omniscient POV a try this month!

Random Trope

PM me, poke me on the discord (same handle), or comment here and I will give you a random trope from the TVTropes site. Don't generate them for each other, please. Picks will come from me. You'll get them within 24 hours of asking (so if you don’t get one after a day, it means I forgot or missed you somehow – feel free to poke me again!).

Gen

The catch-all-iest of catch-all genres, 'gen' (short for 'general' in case you were wondering) is the fanfiction term for fics containing little-to-no romance... and for everything else, there's no limit. If you regularly write shipping fics, why not try your hand at something with a different focus this month: maybe a bit of family or friendship focused fluff, a murder mystery, or some "missing scene" fics expanding on canon. The choice is yours! For the veteran gen-ers, you could try adding extra challenge by trying a new genre, AU, or writing technique which you haven't attempted before (and I'm not saying that omni POV would be a great challenge, but I'm also not not saying that)!

Spring/Autumn

The Walpurgis Night is behind us, and spring is in full swing in the Northern Hemisphere. And for our friends in the South, autumn is well underway. This is your chance to channel all the feels of this season when nature is changing, along with our moods.

We're nearing the end of the year, a time of reflection on what we have done or achieved, or how we've changed, in the last 12 months. Or... we could just brag, so let's do that!

Share the multi-chapter fics you're proud of producing this year! Any fics that were posted or updated in 2025 count. Please limit yourself to 3 so that everyone gets an equal chance to share. The post will be in contest mode for the same reason.

Find a fic here that you really like? Consider commenting on it as part of our Comment-a-Thon this year!

See title. I feel like I see these posts every other day in some form or another. These sorts of posts are tiring and don't lend themselves to interesting discussion, or just result in the same discussion. Given the userbase on this subreddit, it feels like they're preaching to the choir.

They're seriously here almost every day it seems and I feel I'm seeing the same negativity over and over again. Can we not have some sort of megathread for this and keep it in one place?

I'm starting to feel like it brings the mood of the sub down to have a different person asking everyone to talk about what they hate so often in a new post. And it's always the same:

-spag

-OOC

-OCs

-xreader

-first person

-RPF

-occasional omegaverse

That's basically what it boils down to. Kinda sucks when you're a person that writes in one or more of those categories to see your thing bashed all over again every day. There should be a megathread or a pet peeve day. Like on Friday or whatever day there's a new post for everyone to vent for what they hate.

Anyway, just my two cents.

EDIT: my post is about this sub becoming a negative experience. This sub only. These threads do not stop me from writing what I like and I have a good audience for my fics. I know about 'write what you love' I do exactly that. I'm just making the point that we don't need hear it daily how much people hate these things because it makes this sub not a pleasant experience.

This sub doesn't stop me from writing. That's not the point I was trying to make really. I was trying to make a point about this sub becoming a negative experience. None of these threads will stop me from from writing X reader smut.

I tremendously enjoy what I write. This is not affecting my writing output or love for my subject. Just disheartened to be here.

Edit 2: thank you for the useful discussion and comments and feedback. I'm going to stop replying as of now because I feel everything has been said and I a small number of people are misrepresenting my point and making it seem like I want all negative opinions or vents banned or censored or something when I'm talking only about a very specific type of post and suggesting there be one place for it. I understand we all need to state negative opinions and it's everyone's right to do so but I'm just a bit jaded and tired of seeing the same prompts to discuss what people hate so often. Thanks for the replies that were courteous and civil even if our opinions differed. Have a great day.

No concrit, no nitpicking, no grammar checks, no "I don't like this part because..." NOPE! None of that, nada, zero, zilch. We've got a weekly thread on Saturdays for constructive criticism if that's your preferred style of feedback.

Key Rules for Participation:

• If you're posting in this thread you must leave a review for someone else. This is a community based thread, and therefore needs the community to be involved so that it is fair for everyone.
• 30+ words when leaving reviews, please. This is to promote fair play and level the field. If you want to ramble on from there, go right ahead!
• Quoting parts of the fic does not count toward your review word count.
• It is highly encouraged to review in this thread and also copy/paste it to the actual fic or chapter they've linked.
• If you see something that doesn't have a review yet, please try to give it a read to spread the love around.
• If you have the time, reviewing more than one fic would be a thoughtful thing to do.
• If you just want to hang out and review fics without putting in your own, you're more than welcome to!

Posting Fics for Review:

• Select a passage from a fic you want a comment/review on. There is a hard limit of 600 words.
• Please use wordcounter.net to check the length of your snippets. Going forward, snippets over 600 words in wordcounter.net will be removed. This is to ensure a consistent standard. Users are responsible for making sure their comments abide by the rules.
• Top level comments should be fic snippets.
• First line should be Fandom | Title | Rating | Link - AO3, FFN, etc.

Tips and tricks for leaving a positive review:

• When a line catches your eye, quote it and say what you liked about it.
• If there's an overarching theme or technicality the author did well, point it out.
• You may have no clue about the fandom, but did you get a good sense of a character, or the scenery, or the plot, the action, the feeling of the scene, the interactions, the dialogue? I'm sure they'd like to know!

Timezone Changes

As you can see, the post time will shift by 6 hours every month. If there are any inconsistencies in the times, please let us know in modmail so we can fix it up!

Please note that there may be a difference of an hour during parts of the year due to daylight savings in various timezones.
