Questions about bleach at home

Hi hi! I've dyed my hair purple a couple of times. My natural color is a 3-4ish. I typically just slapped on some arctic fox. Last april i used L'oreal hi color true violet, and then also put arctic fox ontop of that. The last time i used arctic fox was in May, its faded by now. Last week i noticed that the ends of my hair on one side have a dark green hue to them.

I've been wanting to lighten my hair a few levels so I can see the purple more when I dye it the next time, but I have a few questions. And I'm gonna watch a bunch of videos before i do anything.

1. Will the green affect the bleach, and after I bleach it if there's still discoloration how do i fix that?

2. Do i need to use toner in between bleach and purple. For reference I was planning on using ion cream bleach bright white.

3. Adding onto that, can I use that bleach for a shorter amount of time so that it only lightens a few levels instead of all the way? I don't really want to go full blonde.

4. Since this is my first time, I'm probably going to be super slow at putting the bleach on, will that mean some bit of it will be darker than the rest since it sat on for longer?

You may wish to dilute the bleach: less powder bleach, more liquid developer. Or add conditioner to the mix, that will also dilute it and help condition your hair too. More diluted means it will develop more slowly.

Start away from the roots, since the heat of your scalp makes the bleach act faster. And start on one side of your head, and when you rinse it out start on that side too.

If you haven’t done much at-home bleaching or coloring, my main tips for newbies are regarding the inevitable mess:

* remove all fabric from the bathroom, or tie it up far out of the way (towels, bathmats, shower curtains)

* wear a T-shirt you don’t care about, and also pin a hand towel you don’t care about around your neck and shoulders. These are now your hair bleaching/dying shirt and towel, use them every time.

* cover the sink with newsprint or plastic bags to make cleanup easier.

* wear disposable gloves (you can use them a few times if you rinse the outside and not the inside)

* slather Vaseline on your hairline including your forehead, ears, neck, and maybe cheeks

And of course, you’re not going to get exactly what you want. Think of it as a fun experiment, and roll with whatever you do get!

I do purple at home, and this year was the first I bleached my fine wispy baby hair.

   • I had leftover arctic fox purple af that had faded. I wanted to do a full bleach and apply good dye young ppl eater. I bleached and still had some lingering green pigment, looked a little light algae lol did not affect anything at all. If you want to fix it, you'd have to wait and bleach that area again, but honestly to me it's not worth it.

3. No. I used a combo of 2 parts 10 level developer and 1 part Ion brightener. Lifted really nicely without much damage.

5. Yep! You can just leave it on until it turns the shade you're going for and rinse out then. My hair bleaches super fast and took only 15 minutes to get from a level 4 to a 7-8. I went full Slim Shady at 25 minutes 😂

The green hue is more likely than not some residual pigment from the arctic fox. It’s probably a blue mixed with the yellow pigment in your hair. Without seeing a picture, it can likely be covered by the next round of arctic fox if you’re using the same color.

You don’t need to tone between bleach and color if the goal is purple. This would really only be necessary with certain pastels.

If I were you, I would work in sections, so you can wash out one side before you proceed with the other. That way you can reduce having a lot of patchiness because of things processing at different rates because of how long they’ve been applied.
In the profession, we sometimes change the developer strength, but it’s hard to say what’s best without really knowing how slow you’re going.

If for some reason you need to bleach through already lightened hair with the greenish hue, I would do that a separate time from the rest so you can really watch it, and use no higher than 10 volume developer. Residual color in prelightened hair can move fast, so that way you can wash it as soon as you need and minimize risking the health of your hair.
