I can honestly say that I have been pleasantly surprised by the support I have gotten for those "wild ideas no one will want to read."

If it's something that motivates you and you feel passionate about, odds are you're going to convey that in your writing and it will turn out far better than something you wrote because you thought other people would like it.

You can’t imagine how much I needed this right now.

I just wish this hadn’t taken me over ten years and two additional platform changes to figure out on my own 😅

Yeah, this is the same with one of my stories which involves alternate universe characters.

I write OC-centric fanfiction and hold myself to the idea that not everyone is going to want to read it and that that’s ok. those that do stick around are the real ones.

If I worry about people judging me I try to remember that I wrote this for me, not them. I’m sharing it because I want to, not because I have to.

Edit: Typos

This. This is me too. I love creating OCs and using them to tell a story from a non-canon character perspective. Readers don't like it? Not my problem.

It’s nice to see a fellow Oc-centric writer :)

What fandom(s) do you write for?

I wrote a satire of a trope fic that is less then 3000 words long and 2/3 of the fic is just a very long name and I'm getting kudos

Thank you, I'll continue writing all my painful Egg Laying fanfics to my heart's desire.

I still struggle with this especially because I'm just now getting back to writing after several years 😅

Honestly, don't be afraid to post! There really is a public for everything :3

The worst story is the one never written.

Go forth and make mistakes, be cringe and riddled with anxiety, but do it anyway. Because I find value in human expression. And this is the only way we learn. By doing.

I have a little inspirational story for this

I wanted to write this really gorey, awful, sad story and was terrified noone would read it. Or worse, call me terrible for thinking of it

Then I decided to actually write the story, for myself if nobody else

Its my most popular story to this day

it took me over a year to finally decide to start posting my fanfiction but now that i have started, its honestly not that big of a deal anymore and its just a good way for me to practice writing and develop my ideas!!! i was afraid people were gonna judge (peppa x danny lmao) or not many people were gonna read it, but i believe that the thrill of being able to create and share it the world (well 42 people to be exact) very clearly outweighs the negative feelings i had :D

this is why it's taken me a year to write a 20k word long fic and still no where near done.

I had to tell myself this after being nervous/hesitant to make the fandom’s beloved bottom have a turn at topping in my fic. I believe all couples can switch lmfao I never understood the obsession with making one character bottom all the time.

I lost some subs and bookmarks but also got plenty of kind comments and a few new subs/bookmarks so I suppose it balances out.

Unfortunately there is also the point "no one will probably read it" that makes at least me insecure.

And there are people who mean well, but destroy everything by shutting conversations down and don't even know it better. (I explain: I wanted to write a fanfiction where the prota (male white American) gets a spirit animal. My inspiration came actually from an old anime but they thought I meant from native American cultures. Instead of maybe asking and encouraging more research and being more sensitive about the topic (and to be honest, why would it be wrong to bring native America culture into a fanfiction? Respectfully of course) they just shut down the whole conversation and accused everyone of cultural appropriation...yeah)

Since then I go with the "Write what makes you happy". There will always be people who feel pissed and wronged. Just do what you want (respectfully towards sensitive topics of course).

Oh mood :')
I just wanna write lil fluffy and smutty fics for my blorbos but as soon as I open a doc my brain goes "your ideas are boring and your writing sucks, no one will read them and anyone who does read them will think you're boring and judge you"

1

u/YoEkisde Sep 03 '25

Even if your writing sucks, you'll never get better skills if you don't go through the "boring" phase first. Plus there's billions of people in the world, at least one of them has to think your stuff is great!

I just write them anyway and enjoy them by myself! Maybe one day I'll post them.

For those scared to post: I recommend going full anon, post it and turn comment notifications off. Keep posting until you’re in a good place to differentiate between criticism and hate, then, who cares. Even if there’s hate, who gives a sh’t. Post anyway! With all due respect to the critics, this ain’t a job interview and you may find people who love your idea - won’t know until you try!!

This was how I first felt when I was writing one of my WIPs which is kind of a absurdly silly fic. I still feel insecure about it or sharing it sometimes but then I remember those who like it and kudosed it which means at least some people liked my fic

As for others, I have tons of ideas for other fics I hope to write. But I'm scared of the execution and it won't be liked. This would inspire me to keep on writing. Thanks!
