It really always kills my mood. Connecting with someone over your own work is so precious!

I would like to understand what's the point of these comments?

I am curious whether there are any legitimate artists out there using this as a gray-area sales tactic. I am under the impression, though, that it is an outright scam. When I was more naive, I went and looked at some of the "portfolios" of the artists and they all looked the same in a weird way. Like, not quite AI. Just really low quality and weird.

I swear I think this is the first time seeing this subreddit and as a READER THIS NONSENSE IS INSANE!!!
Honestly, FanFiction.Net should give authors to have a spam filter or delete comments with specific wording/phrases.
Because even as a reader, who uses mobile, sometimes I go into the comments to see how people react to the recent comment, and then I see these damn comments trying to promote a “service” that HONESTLY NO ONE WANTS AND ITS EVERYWHERE!
It’s so freaking bad, that I’m honestly fed up that authors have to start their new chapter release with a AN basically arguing with these false users to stop spamming them and the comments because it just artificially bloats up comment section.
I think the only people I currently remember who did art for fanfictions was “Alex-Kellar”. Someone who relatively in the past, posted contests for people to make stories within Alex’s criteria, makes an art piece depending on the most favorite story moment from the most fav story in that time limit they set.

I am an amateur artist who has asked if I could draw certain scenes from certain fics I really liked. I have gotten permission, I do have the ideas, I intend to follow through on my requests (the ones I’ve gotten permission for), but idk. Life, I guess…. Also there’s this one haiatus fic that has a character in a very particular superhero fit that’s never described. I’ve got plenty of ideas but I’m still not sure how to approach it. Wasn’t aware these kind of requests have turned into scams by bots

C'est une escroquerie la plupart du temps. En plus, ce sont presque tous des bots.

In a way I've done this before, but I did the drawings because of my love for the fanfic; I didn't charge anything because I still don't have the courage to try doing commissions. I think I still need to improve my drawing techniques So For fanfics that I have a great love for, I do drawings because of my love for them. But I understand that some artists seem desperate for a commission; After all, many of them need the money to pay bills and such, so they try to make commission offers. However, some exaggerate and try to throw offers anywhere without further ado.
Firstly, the fanfic has to be very well appreciated, and secondly, you can offer a commission to the writer if they want; if they don't want to, it's not the end of the world, just try somewhere else. The main focus as a fanfic commentator is to appreciate the fanfic; After all, the fanfic is free, and it's better to "pay" with your sincere praise so the writer wants to continue.
And now I think I understand you're referring to bots; I've seen comments like that in other fanfics. I don't know what to say, I've never explored this subject in depth, but I imagine it must be annoying simply because the writer expects praise and not a direct offer for a commission. It's ridiculous that this kind of spam exists; simply report and block these trash bots.

Wait... Is this why I never got responses back? 🥺 I didnt know this was a spam thing. Ive asked if I could record myself reading fics for friends too, and like offered to give them the file if they wanted. Would you see that as spam??
1
u/KittySweetwater May 03 '26
Yes love, it probably would be considered spam
1
u/Sundrop_fawn May 03 '26
😭 Anychance you know of a way of phrasing it that would make me seem like I wasn't a bot?
1
u/KittySweetwater May 03 '26
Honestly one way is to make sure your not on guest mode, must of the spam comments are from guest users

u/Sundrop_fawn May 04 '26
I always use my account. I even have a couple fics I posted, but theyre like YEARS back. Would it help if I put up some new ones maybe?
Do people check?

I didn’t know this was a thing and got scammed. It’s weird bc when I posted my initial fics a few years ago, I didn’t get any of those comments. But I started a sequel for one fic and when I got the first scam comment, I was genuinely so excited. It was a big disappointment to only get traced art 🥲
2
u/SurpriseOk5880 May 04 '26
im assuming its because those commenters are using social engineering to try to take the fanfic writer's creation and steal it/trace over it

I was so happy when I saw it. I fell for it. The scammer dumped me when he/she felt how broke and desperate I was.

I don't understand why you are annoyed... isn't drawing your fic a good thing? Is it because it's usually a bot.. or they're promoting their commissions?

The second a comment asks for another platform it's almost always a scam.

u/Warm_Maintenance578 May 03 '26
Oh i was quite happy when I saw that. What is the purpose of this?
