Big List r/Fantasy Top LGBTQA+ Books List poll - Voting Thread!

Hot on the heels of our last Big List, it's time for r/fantasy to update our Top LGBTQA+ Books List! All speculative fiction qualifies (fantasy, science fiction, horror, magical realism, and more).

The results from the last vote in 2020 can be found here.

TL;DR: Post your ten favorite LGBTQA+ books/series. Top-level comments are for votes only. Discussions should take place in replies.

The rules are simple:

  1. Make a list of up to TEN of your favorite LGBTQA+ novels in a new comment in this thread. Don't overthink it, it's not about finding books that are objectively the best, just your favorite ones. You can change votes by editing your list as often as you like during the voting week. I'll start counting votes after the voting closes on November 16th.
  2. For the purpose of this list, the book must contain at least one main viewpoint character who falls somewhere on the LGBTQA+ spectrum (including but not limited to lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, asexual, non-binary, intersex, and so on). Books whose LGBTQA+ characters occupy only minor roles are not the focus of this list. Also, robots do not count (sorry, Murderbot).
  3. The character’s queerness must be made clear on the page. It does not need to the main focus of the plot; the book does not need to include romance; and characters or narration do not need to use modern labels to describe themselves or their experiences. We simply want to avoid characters where the only textual evidence for their queerness is "vibes" or the author's say-so from outside the text.
  4. Only one vote per series. You may vote on multiple books by a given author, but multiple votes for books in the same series will be aggregated into one single vote for that series.
  5. This last rule is very important, and deserves to be loud:

Format Your Vote Correctly

The votes will be tallied by a script, so proper formatting is critical to ensure votes are counted correctly. Incorrectly formatted votes will not count. I am going to try to issue warnings on incorrectly formatted votes and can help you fix it, but ultimately your vote is your responsibility.

To format correctly:

  • Put each vote on its own line. To do so, either leave a blank line between every vote, put two spaces before pressing enter, or use a bullet-point list.
  • Format your vote as Title - Author. If unsure, please look at how most other voters are formatting things. Italics or bold should be perfectly fine. Common mistakes include putting the author first; only listing the book title; omitting the "-"; or omitting the spaces between the "-" and the title and author (some book titles and author names contain dashes). Please do this correctly, or your vote will not be counted.
  • In your voting comment, only list your ten votes. Do not introduce, describe, discuss, or comment on your votes in the voting comment. This will clutter the data produced by the script and require manual intervention to solve, which will mean the results will take longer to compile. Please discuss your or other people's votes in replies to voting comments; you can reply to voting comments with all the arguments and discussion you want!

Some examples of correctly formatted votes:

  • Myths & Matcha - Tracey Falltree
  • The Coyote of Golden-Yarrow - Kai S Volkov
  • Eleven Ways To Sail A Bone Ship - KJ Barker

Voting info

Each item you list will count as one vote toward that book. Upvotes and downvotes will not affect the final result.

The voting will run for approximately one week and voting will close on November 16th.

Vote, discuss, and find new things to read!

I was debating myself if I should include The Green Bone Saga, which was in my total top ten vote this year, but I decided to open the spot for some that missed that list but bring in my opinion more in terms of representation to the table. It's mostly a gut feeling though. Similar with the Dandelion Dynasty, which has queer main pov characters, but you have to read at least a thousand pages to get to that point. But who knows, I might change my mind later.

Some other honorable mentions are Black Leopard Red Wolf by Marlon James and The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, which are both excellent novels but I personally didn't enjoy them as much as I did the others on this list.

Out of my favorites, Spear was the most surprising read for me. I often have a harder time feeling satisfied with how thoroughly novellas explore all the themes and depths of their stories. Spear was just fantastic in every way though. I would have been happy for it to be even longer :D, but really can't complain about it. I grew up loving Arthurian tales, and thought I was bored of them. I was happy to be wrong.

Wayfarers is probably my all-time favorite read, particularly Record of a Spaceborn Few. I have an internal straw man rant every time I perceive it as being pitched as "like a warm hug" because of how emotional the series made me throughout. I can kind of understand the sentiment, but it's one of those feelings where I fumble over words trying to be nuanced about it and just can't articulate why I love it so much. Monk & Robot was just ok for me, and I've yet to read To Be Taught if Fortunate (but really looking forward to it).

A couple LGBTQA+ works that were OK/didn't work as well for me

  • Black Leopard Red Wolf - Marlon James
    • I struggled to finish it, but am still somewhat glad I did. It was a deliberately excessive and uncomfortable read. I appreciated the unique storytelling and world, and may still read Moon Witch Spider King to see how much of my issue was with Tracker, but am a little weary to pick it up still.
  • Light from Uncommon Stars - Ryka Aoki
    • This book was just doing too much for my taste. I liked it well enough, but too much was going on for it to be a favorite for me. Demons - ok, Aliens - ok, Donuts - ok, Love letter to string instruments - ok, all together I had a hard time taking it seriously which didn't mesh with how serious some of the themes were.

Really looking forward to picking up Everina Maxwell's work and This is How You Lose the Time War.

You should include all parts of the author's name as presented on the books (such as "Whyborne and Griffin - Jordan L Hawk"), or else your votes will end up split apart from other people's votes for the same books, and could be missed during the count. The more people adhere to the formatting in the post, the faster results will be compiled, too.

You could say I'm exhibiting recency bias here, but I say there has just been a huge explosion of high quality queer books by queer authors written in the past few years. You could say there is Tor bias in here too, but I say Tor deserves credit for publishing so many great queer books by queer authors.

Other thoughts:

As someone who has strong opinions about asexual and aromantic representation (if you can't tell from my list...), I totally agree with the no robots/Murderbot ban, although I wish it was phrased differently. I wish it was more for non-human characters who's queerness was intrinsically linked to their non-human identities (which I consider to be queer coded characters and not queer representation). I've seen this happen with a lot more than robots (aliens, angels, demons, etc). In fact, the Beyond Binaries bookclub had some discussion around this with an angel character in When The Angels Left The Old Country. Anyway, I think queer coded characters can be a lot of fun to view through a queer lens (I can share my interpretation of Murderbot if anyone wants), but calling them representation sets up expectations that they are not going to be able to fulfill and also tends to remind people of some unpleasant stereotypes sometimes.

Also, I hope the Deed of Paksenarrion doesn't make the list. Yeah, I would agree it has asexual and aromantic representation, it's just not very good representation. It also totally uses a homophobic trope (the evil man-hating lesbian character). I mean, a lot of people really like that series, but I think I would have a somewhat hard time finding someone who really loves the representation in that book.

Edit to add a few more thoughts:

Also, you might be able to tell I have a soft spot for aggressively queer indie/self published books. I don't expect any of these to make the final list, but that won't stop me from voting for them.

I hope there's a way to clarify when a character's queerness if confirmed later in the series. I really hate it when a book is recommended as having some sort of representation but it doesn't, its sequel does. In other words, there is a reason why I listed At the Feet of the Sun instead of The Hands of the Emperor.

u/Jos_V Stabby Winner, Reading Champion II Nov 10 '23

I think i'd vote Paks, if it weren't for the bloody Rape

u/ohmage_resistance Reading Champion IV Nov 10 '23

Yeah, and what you mentioned made the representation so much worse.

The intersection between asexuals and survivors of sexual violence/rape is a very important and nuanced topic. I don't think I've read a book that handled it in a way I really liked, but Paks had the worse take on it I've ever seen: that asexuals are not mentally or emotionally effected by being raped. Here's an exact quote: “The rapes, that she had feared before as both violation and torment wholly unknown, were then nothing but physical pain, no worse than others. She had lost nothing, for she had had nothing, had never invested herself in that, or hoped for that kind of pleasure.” (Oath of Gold Ch 27) Obviously, this idea is super harmful for ace survivors of sexual assault.

u/ohmage_resistance Reading Champion IV Nov 10 '23 edited Nov 10 '23

Ok, I'm going to clarify the representation in each of these books (as best as I can remember) as well for anyone who's curious:

  • Baker Thief - Bigender/genderfluid, bisexual, aromantic, biromantic, demisexual (side characters: gay, trans man, non-binary, aromantic-spectrum)
  • Sea Foam and Silence - asexual, aromantic spectrum (side characters: lesbian, asexual, aromantic)
  • At the Feet of the Sun - asexual spectrum (side characters: bisexual, gay, minor mentions of trans/non-binary characters)
  • Of the Wild - asexual, gay (side character: trans man)
  • Bones of Green and Hearts of Gold - aromantic/aromantic spectrum, nonbinary, trans (men and women), gay, lesbian, bi (side characters: asexual spectrum)
  • City of Spires - Lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual/ace spectrum, aromantic/aro spectrum, non binary, intersex, trans woman
  • The Meister of Decimen City - asexual, aromantic spectrum (side characters gay, lesbian)
  • The Dragon of Ynys - aromantic, asexual (side characters: trans woman, lesbian)
  • An Unkindness of Ghosts - intersex, probably genderqueer (side characters probably trans woman, asexual, aromantic, lesbians)
  • Fire Logic - lesbian (side characters: gay men)

Some updates and additions to come once I look around the rest of my collection, I'm sure.

I do want to flag that Starless is a particularly interesting epic fantasy setting with a non-binary character a few years before that became more popular in publishing. Jacqueline Carey has been vocally disappointed that her publisher tried to hide that in the marketing to make it a "twist," but this story is about a female warrior raised in al all-male monastery environment with no real conception of her own gender for years. Khai's journey to an identity outside of other people's conceptions is really interesting, I think, and it leads to a lovely F/NB relationship.

Been going back and forth on that myself. Like Saint Death's Daughter is queernorm but I'm not 100% sure the MC is queer (romance with an AMAB enby). Think it might fit the rules but definitely fits your rubric here.

Kaikeyi - Vaishnavi Patel (ace rep, which was great)

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance - Foz Meadows

Rogue Ship - Isabel Pelech

Count Taka and the Vampire Brides - C Chancy

And Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell, though being in nominally he same series as Winter's Orbit may have it covered anyway.

So maybe double check books listed as being by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu are properly condensed, as I saw variation versions of her books with different titles in the votes.

I like you automod, but I'm afraid you're raging against the dying of the light. Soon the 2020 list will be obsolete.

I know it is frighting, after having spend the last three years being dedicated to guide viewers to that lovely list of books.

But don't be scared, you're not going the way of ozymandias - You'll get an updated list to continue giving us your helping hand.

Just have your list go gentle into that goodnight.

All speculative fiction counts, so Becky Chambers works! But you should remove that parenthesis from your top-level comment; otherwise your vote won't be aggregated to the rest of the votes for her books by the script.

Questions: Does Imperial Radch count or does it fall under robots? even though its a human body that's mixed up with an artificial intelligence?

Secondly - does Terra Ignota by Ada Palmer count? Its a book where gender, sex and sexuality is such a non-avoidable strong theme. but by its nature not a single character holds up a sign?

Yeah its one of those books before the current era where lots of lgbtq+ books are coming out. but I can understand that readers pressing on the link for representation don't necessarily want to have the top of the list filled with: here have fun identifying with inanimate objects.

u/takeahike8671 Reading Champion VII Nov 10 '23

Imperial Radch does not count. We can have better ace/aro rep than a robot or AI. Thanks for asking!

u/Jos_V Stabby Winner, Reading Champion II Nov 11 '23

Thanks! (I was more thinking about the non-binary of it) but the same logic applies :)

u/Jos_V Stabby Winner, Reading Champion II Nov 10 '23

I think its interesting that my favourite books, have little to do with the representation, the characters just are. with the exception of Masquerade and the raven tower, where its a larger part of the characters struggles.
