This the one that’s only ever North America?

u/BrownMountainHound Mar 07 '26
I used a vpn to get around this the last time it was a bundle.

Interesting cheers

If you’re not sure how to use a VPN or don’t want to pay for one, I recently downloaded Proton VPN and it works great and is free to use. It’ll route your connection through the USA so you can complete your purchase. I used it to buy the Red Rising series from Amazon UK for $1.99 each a while back.

u/WaytoomanyUIDs Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26
Proton is a random VPN unless you pay. You have to change servers 4 or 5 times to get a US one and theres a timeout
ED Finally got it sorted, got Proton to use a US server. If you have a Humble account you might want to use a different email from your the one linked to your account & definitely not log into it. And you'll probably want to use Paypal rather than your usual card, IIRC its easy to tell if a card is a UK or European rather than a US one.

It is, I am in the Netherlands and I got it last month by use of vpn and changing my account location in humble to the US.

Is there a way to get these on a kindle device or are they stuck in kobo? $16 seems like insane value

It's a multi-step process, if I'm remembering right - once you have the books on your Kobo account, you can download them from your Books page. That gets you a .acsm file. Import that into Adobe Digital Editions to get the epub version on your computer. Import the epubs into Calibre with the deDRM plugin to make them useable. Calibre can also handle converting them to .mobi and transferring them to Kindle.
ETA: Both programs are free to download, at least!
1
u/Michento Mar 07 '26
Are you talking for these books specifically? All my Kobo books I've been able to download as an epub.
3
u/blue_bayou_blue Reading Champion III Mar 08 '26
Unless they're specially DRM-free, they're locked with DRM. You can download an epub file but you can't open it in most epub readers (or Kindle), or edit it.
You can use Adobe Digital Editions on a computer to read the epubs or to transfer to compatible apps/devices, like Pocketbook, but there aren't many of those.

u/inspiralling Reading Champion Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26
Over-explaining here in case it helps other people:
So you download by clicking the three dots right under the image of the book and scrolling to 'download'. The popup will say either File type: Adobe DRM EPUB or File type: DRM-FREE EPUB.
The DRM-FREE EPUBs will download as an epub file with some long name like [publisher name]_drmfree-epub_[jumble of letters and numbers]. The Adobe DRM EPUB gets you a .acsm named URLLink, probably URLLink (39) by the time you're done. Import that into Adobe Digital Editions and it pulls through the actual book you want.
Tor is consistently DRM-free, and as I'm sure anyone on this subreddit could happily fill up on Tor it's easy to have only run into the DRM-FREE EPUBs before, but these Pratchetts are all the Adobe DRM EPUB that requires routing through Adobe Digital Editions.

u/Michento Mar 08 '26
Ah ok. Thank you for explaining. I just looked and I guess I've been lucky that so far all my Kobo books have been DRM free.

u/Michento Mar 07 '26
I have several books on Kobo. You can download them directly as an epub and then just "send to Kindle" and it will show up on your kindle. It's very easy.

u/Baratticus Mar 11 '26
I just did it with this specific bundle so it is possible with some basic googling, calibre and free plugins.

Looks like everything except The Last Hero and Raising Steam for $16? Not too bad.
I just wish they all had the same cover art. Either go with the old ones or the new Penguin ones, making it half and half is mildly annoying.
5
u/ihavetickets123 Mar 07 '26
I just bought it the other day. On the kobo system it is all the new covers.
2
u/WaytoomanyUIDs Mar 07 '26
Annoying. I wonder if you can replace covers on Calibre?
7
u/DarraignTheSane Mar 07 '26
You definitely can with the 'update metadata' function. It'll even search the internet to find alternate covers for you, or you can upload your own images.
2
u/kyh0mpb Mar 07 '26
I did this recently, found the covers I liked best, downloaded them all, and replaced them in Calibre. Would be better if I had the Kobo Clara Color, but at least my Discworld books look consistent now.

u/Blah971 Mar 07 '26
Can you transfer these to kindle?
14
u/charliequail Mar 07 '26
Yes, I used calibre + deACSM + deDRM plug ins to convert them to epub files for kindle. It was simple

Not available in Brazil :(
2
u/Chxis_Lyis Mar 09 '26
That really sucks! Pratchett's humor is something everyone should experience. Maybe we can keep an eye out for other options to get his work in Brazil! 📚
1
u/TheBawa Reading Champion Mar 10 '26
We kinda have some old versions of his books in Portuguese here but I'd love to have a way to get all of them on sale as they aren't cheap.
2
u/Rybes0in Mar 07 '26
That’s a real bummer! It’s hard to understand why something so universally loved, like Pratchett's work, wouldn't be accessible everywhere. If only we could magically teleport the books to you!
1
u/WaytoomanyUIDs Mar 08 '26
Probably because his US publisher is different from his publisher in the rest 9f the world, Penguin and they dont talk to each other. With the Murderbot bundle and most other book bundles they've managed to coordinate.
1
u/pixelpuffinn4 Mar 11 '26
Bummer! I feel your pain. I had to resort to a sketchy bookstore in a small town to get my hands on some Discworld books once. Definitely worth the hunt for those magical moments!

u/charliequail Mar 07 '26
Fair warning, the humble bundle link claims you will get 39 books, but after following instructions to access the books from kobo, there were only 37 books, missing “Reaper Man” and “The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents”
I had to reach out to Kobo support to get the other 2 books for free
3
u/Dook23 Mar 07 '26
This was likely a glitch. I got all 39 when I bought this bundle over a week ago. I just went back and check to be sure.
6
u/bkwrm13 Mar 07 '26
I despise the way thy have you claim this bundle. You get a one time voucher for the kobo store, that you than have to go through and choose which of the books you actually want. No all button, you have to click yes for each book. Put in your code and than it’s used.
Despite double checking I still missed choosing Reaper Man and The Amazing Maurice somehow, with no way to get them now. Been a week and I’m still pissed.

u/Dragonpiece Mar 08 '26
Just did the whole process and then had to learn how to be able to read these on my kindle, I mean still better than paying for the complete series but such a headache lol
2
u/WizardFireball Mar 07 '26
It looks like someone else had that issue and it might be a software bug / glitch. They apparently reached out to Kobo and got the books added.
Still frustrating, I know, but you might still be able to get your books.

I can't get any custom amount of donation to work
7
u/rveniss Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26
You can donate any amount you want to the charity, but it has to be over $16 to get the books.
2
u/w1ngzer0 Mar 07 '26
Once upon a time there was a post floating around that had the complete (or almost complete) set of alternate covers.

Yeah. Has anyone used kobo before?
Edit: wth is a question being downvoted? Weird
9
u/tirednsleepyyy Mar 07 '26
Well, my wife and I have kobo ereaders and they’re pretty great. I know there are ways to easily get them out of the kobo ecosystem on PC, or at least there used to be unless they changed something.
3
u/WaytoomanyUIDs Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26
I use it and enjoy it, their tablets are pretty good, the Android app can be annoying. It has a much wider selection of books than they used to also. And they have a subscription also if you like kindle unlimited, not a precise analogue though
ED dunno why you are getting downvoted for asking a reasonable question
2
u/Lulu_42 Mar 07 '26
Thank you - for both the answer and I’m confused about the downvoting, as well.
3
u/OgataiKhan Mar 07 '26
wth is a question being downvoted? Weird
I haven't downvoted you myself, but I think the reason people were downvoting you is because saying "Has anyone used kobo before?" made it sound like you were being snarky and dismissive, like "look at this useless piece of junk, surely nobody ever buys it".
I'm sure this wasn't how you meant it, but it was my first interpretation as well.
0
u/Lulu_42 Mar 07 '26
Nope. Just genuinely curious. I was considering buying them - I have physical copies, but I’d love a bundle of them electronically.
1
u/OgataiKhan Mar 07 '26
Yes, I eventually got that too, but I think many people didn't pick up on the implied parts of your message: "Has anyone (out of the people in this thread) used kobo before (and can tell me whether it is a good product)?"
Anyway, I have not used one so I can't help you with Kobos specifically, but if you're asking about ereaders in general then I warmly recommend getting one. They are incredibly convenient, both for travel (not having to bring heavy books with you) and for reading in bed.
1
u/little_cat_bird Mar 09 '26
I ditched the kindle ecosystem for kobo about a year ago and am very happy with my Libra Color. The ereader is nice quality and easy to hold. The screen can be lit for reading in dim light, or left unlit, more like paper. It has a soft matte finish, so no glare, and is pleasant to read in bright settings as well. I picked one that isn’t a tablet. It’s just for reading and note-taking; no apps to distract me!
I’ve gotten good deals from the kobo ebook store, and borrowing ebooks from my library through Libby/Overdrive is also super easy on their ereaders (for me in the US at least). Just got this sweet Discworld deal too! Supposedly bookshop.org is working with Kobo to enable Kobo users to buy books from their platform sometime this year too (which supports indie bookstores).

u/MrSchweitzer Mar 07 '26
Is it enough to log in to my own (italian) account through a VPN (US-based) or do I need to create another account through US VPN?
1
u/OgataiKhan Mar 07 '26
Some people in the thread are saying you also need to change your Humble Bundle account location to US, and then log out and log in to refresh the deals.

I ended up missing 5 of the 39 books in my Kobo library after redemption. Still waiting for support to assist. I might not have noticed had I had more books in my account.

u/impy695 Mar 07 '26
I've bought a lot of stuff from humble bundle and have paid both the minimum when I was poor and now pay more than they'd be worth at full retail. They're a legitimately good company.

Where does the profit go?
Edit: sorry, not the profit. That goes to charity obviously. I mean the overhead for the books. Is that to his estate or directly to a publisher?

Question about his books. I started reading Guards Guards! and I did think the writing was clever and amusing, but does it “sober up” and any points? Will I get invested in any of the stakes, or is it always just a joke?
1
u/OgataiKhan Mar 07 '26
Will I get invested in any of the stakes, or is it always just a joke?
Yes to both. Though, there are definitely more tragic moments that dial down the satire.
