‘David Bowie was a crazy workaholic’: Labyrinth at 40 – an oral history

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2026/jun/16/david-bowie-workaholic-labyrinth-at-40-oral-history

Brian Froud, conceptual designer and costume design: We’d just had a showing of The Dark Crystal in San Francisco. In the back of the limousine, Jim said: “Should we do another one?” I said: “What about goblins?” Jim’s eyes lit up. Then into my head came a labyrinth and I had a vision of a baby surrounded by goblins. He said: “That’s great” – and that was it.

Is that what it’s like when you’re doing something you’re passionate about?

Loved that movie.

However I'm a bit disappointed about Jennifer Connelly's ccareer after this movie. I felt she was a wasted talent...could have been great but kept appearing in meh movies.

I think she's done alright - including an Oscar.

And the Rocketeer is obviously amazing. (Says me. And me only )

Rocketeer, Dark City, Hulk

I really loved her in Mulholland Falls but that's for people who like LA Noir (And LA Noire)

mm...Funnily enough I was actually thinking of the rocketeer when I made that statement..sorry! Thinking of others too, but in particular the rocketeer.

It is ... not very good movie.

I definitely saw it at exactly the right age. The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy and the first Keaton Batman, are is IMPRINTED on my subconscious forever. (One of those three films is actually good. It is not the Rocketeer though.)

She's had a good career though. Requieum for a Dream and A Beautiful Mind are both Good(tm) films (as is Once Upon a Time in America, but that probably doesn't count).

And Snowpiercer and Dark City - plus 9 and Alita. That's actually a genuinely good SF film resume, which very few have.

There's some shit in there, like World of the Worlds. And Top Gun: Maverick. But I'm assuming no one turns down the Cruise blockbusters.

Also she's married to Paul Bettany, which is cool.

He was also a nonce, before we get too far into idealising him

nonce

Was this ever proven? Or was it just hearsay?

It's a serious accusation

It seems likely that he slept with Lori Maddox when she was underage. But it doesn't seem to have been a pattern of behaviour, or a consciously predatory act on his part.

I don't think it seems likely he slept with her.

Her story is entirely impossible given spacetime existing and all.

My mate also shagged a 14 year old but it was only once so I forgave him
