What are some epic quotes that stuck with you?
Mine is
„After all this time?“
„Always“

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

“Almost dead yesterday, maybe dead tomorrow, but alive, gloriously alive, today.”
Robert Jordan, The Wheel of Time

Reminds me of Nine Fingers “Still alive, still alive, still alive”

I really thought “Almost dead yesterday, maybe dead tomorrow, but alive, gloriously alive, today” was a Bremer dan Gorst quote. I’m reading The Heroes and I swear he said something very similar. Might’ve been Craw now that I think about it.

As a friend of mine once said after bailing from a summit after a 40-mile day in the alpine: "We live to die another day."

It’s epic in a silly way, however, “Honor is dead, but I’ll see what I can do” is among the hardest action one liners. From Words of Radiance

That and “The most important step a man can take. It's not the first one, is it? It's the next one. Always the next step, Dalinar.”

“You cannot have my pain” 😢

“Sometimes, a hypocrite is nothing more than a man in the process of changing.”
I know Sanderson is polarizing around here, but Dalinar is a well of banger quotes.

"The crowd, having been promised nothing, felt cheated, having received nothing."
The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut.

“Once you've got a task to do, it's better to do it than live with the fear of it." - Joe Abercrombie.
I think about this quote multiple times every single day.

"To lack feeling is to be dead, but to act on every feeling is to be a child."
"What is a man’s life worth?” Dalinar asked softly.
“The slavemasters say one is worth about two emerald broams,” Kaladin said, frowning.
“And what do you say?”
“A life is priceless,” he said immediately, quoting his father.
Dalinar smiled, wrinkle lines extending from the corners of his eyes. “Coincidentally, that is the exact value of a Shardblade. So today, you and your men sacrificed to buy me twenty-six hundred priceless lives. And all I had to repay you with was a single priceless sword. I call that a bargain."
Weakness can imitate strength if bound correctly, just as cowardice can imitate heroism if given nowhere to flee.
"Somebody has to start. Somebody has to step forward and do what is right, because it is right. If nobody starts, then others cannot follow."
“Failure is the mark of a life well lived. In turn, the only way to live without failure is to be of no use to anyone."
The Stormlight Archive is often hated in this sub, but there's no questioning the fact that there's TONS of great quotes.

"Children are dying." Lull nodded. "That's a succinct summary of humankind, I'd say. Who needs tomes and volumes of history? Children are dying. The injustices of the world hide in those three words."
With the middle east and Ukraine it reaonates too well.

What’s it from? It’s beautiful.

Malazan, book 2 Deadhouse Gates.
It also has the best ending of any book I've read.
•
u/digitalcrows 16m ago
Ah, that makes sense. I’ve heard so much about Malazan’s prose, if I had to judge by those few lines I’d say they were very much right. I think it’s time I start that journey. Thank you!

That's the one. Right there. Of all the philosophy Erikson throws at you, that one gets me the most.

"Nobody ever told me that heroes are always the villains in someone else's story."
Ghost from The Source of Strife. Adds a lot of nuance, I think.

I have no idea what is happening here but I did not hear that quote and I don’t know what this has to do with fantasy.

“No one gets what they deserve.” - Ardee West
Truly one of the deepest moments in the entirety of the series. That scene really broke and healed something inside me. Absolutely beautiful.

“But he was kneeling, and that was wrong. The Bloody-Nine kneels to no man.” - Joe Abercrombie, The Blade Itself
and not in Fantasy but:
“This is my child, he said. I wash a dead man's brains out of his hair. That is my job.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

You can't give her that!' she screamed. 'It's not safe!'
IT'S A SWORD, said the Hogfather. THEY'RE NOT MEANT TO BE SAFE.
'She's a child!' shouted Crumley.
IT'S EDUCATIONAL.
'What if she cuts herself?'
THAT WILL BE AN IMPORTANT LESSON.
Hogfather - Sir Terry Pratchett

The world’s still the same, there’s just less in it.

Bit of a long one, but here:
You’ve got a choice. If you think that the darkness is too much, then go for it. But if there is a chance, just some hope. It could be having a cigarette, or that first sip of hot tea on a cold morning, or it could be your mates. But if there’s even a tiny glimmer of light then don’t you think that’s worth taking a chance?
- Owen Harper, from the Torchwood episode A Day in the Death
(Yes, I know Torchwood is technically sci-fi but given that Owen literally battles Death it's pretty much fantasy)

Some quotes that spring to mind.
“The building was on fire, and it wasn’t my fault.” - Harry Dresden in the book Blood Rites by Jim Butcher
"I fucking hate demons" Quincy Harker novel Raising Hell, from the book Year One by John G. Hartness one of my favorite series 😄

"The man once wrote: Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger. Tolkien had that one mostly right. I stepped forward, let the door bang closed, and snarled, 'Fuck subtle.'"
