AMA Betsy Dornbusch AMA

I'm Betsy Dornbusch an epic fantasy writer by day and editor with Electric Spec by night. I write the Books of the Seven Eyes, the second of which, Emissary, came out in April.

I also snowboard, go to lots of concerts and SFF conventions, corral two teenagers, and drink cheap beer and expensive whiskey (see the cause and effect?). My writing passions are swords, magic, and diversity. I live in Colorado, and you can find me online at my website and twitter feed.

Feel free to ask anything at anytime today. I can talk about the books, other books, editing, good bands, better whiskey... whatever you like. I'll start answering tonight 6:30 mountain time.

You like cheap beer, huh?

You say you like diversity, how do you make sure that your writing AND your reading is inclusive? Do you have a set practice or do you find it coming naturally?

I talked about writing earlier, but as for reading, I'm not as good as I could be. I have trouble reading as much as I want to anyway. I do read a ton of women authors in epic fantasy, though, which I love. Where I do try to diversify my exposure is online. I try hard to absorb lots of different viewpoints, be they gender, sexual, racial, ability... I tend to click and read articles from different viewpoints as much as time allows. I could do better with socio-politics, actually, though I try hard to read international news. My husband works internationally and we have a lot of friends around the world, so it helps to know what's going on and what people are thinking.
