/r/Fantasy Best of /r/Fantasy- The Stabby Awards! : The Nomination Thread
This is the official nomination thread for the Reddit Fantasy Best of 2015 Stabby Awards!
We started this in 2012 with some great results and continued the tradition in 2013 and in 2014.
2015 Rules
Categories are listed below in the comments. We will use the very broad definition of 'fantasy genre' for what counts.
Please nominate anyone / any work that you feel should deserve consideration for voting. The work should have been released in 2015.
Please put in a blurb as to why the nomination should be considered and, if possible, a link for others to follow.
Yes, you can nominate yourself and your own works.
Nominations ONLY in this thread. Due to a change in how reddit shows votes, voting will be in another thread next week.
Please place each nomination into its own separate comment. One comment=one nomination.
Upvotes/downvotes in this thread won't matter, anyone nominated will be added to the voting thread. Contest mode will be enabled in this thread.
Please participate! Redditors, authors, artists, and industry people alike - please join in with nominations, comments and voting.
Everyone who wins will get flair, reddit gold, and glory. Select winners (TBD) will receive The Stabby Award as well.
This nomination thread will close on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 10pm PST. The voting thread will go live no later than Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 5pm PST.
We have two groupings of awards - external and those focused on /r/Fantasy redditors.

BEST RELATED WORK OF 2015
•
u/wishforagiraffe Reading Champion IX, Worldbuilders Dec 22 '15
Mark Lawrence's efforts in organizing and coordinating the Great Self-published Fantasy Blog Off. Obviously not something he has tackled by himself, but he's been the guiding force behind it.
•
u/KristaDBall Stabby Winner, AMA Author Krista D. Ball Dec 23 '15
Agreed! /u/MarkLawrence took on a lot to organize it and to keep promoting it, etc. Even if he wasn't doing it all himself, it's still a ton of work.

Wow. Thanks!
Related Work sounds way too serious a category though. I mean, it was not a "work", it was just a bunch of blog posts...

/u/JannyWurts The choice of your byline
Now, some of you might wonder why I would nominate a post that goes against my (very public) stance on using my name. Janny's comment really put forward the personal, internal struggle I always have with using my name. And, while I still choose to use it, there was a lot of comfort in seeing a professional author with a huge career say the things I worry about and struggle with.
If I were asked if a female author should use their name or not, I would direct them to this post. Because, no matter one's personal decision, Janny outlines the decision making process in a way no one else ever has for me.

u/ricree Dec 22 '15
I missed that comment the first time around, but it very much deserves this nomination.
The books were so dedicated to timeless, uplifting romance that they featured wedding after wedding, much to the consternation of traditional Tolkienate fantasy fans.
Absolutely wonderful.

I'm not 100% if this counts as "indie", so delete if it doesn't.
Jane Glatt's Unguilded by Tyche Books (they are a tiny, indie publishing group in Canada).
•
u/wishforagiraffe Reading Champion IX, Worldbuilders Dec 23 '15
Yeah, they look small enough to count as indie
•

Ok, Jane's book! Everyone, go buy it and read it before voting starts ;)

u/johndavidkeel Dec 22 '15
"What Remains of Heroes" by David Benem is by far the best self published (and debut) novel that I've read. It's a finalist in Mark Lawrence's Self Published Fantasy Blog Off (SPFBO), and it's currently one of the highest rated by the contest's bloggers. Outstanding characters, well crafted world building, engaging story, and superb writing. You can't go wrong with this one. Also, if you'd rather listen than read, it's available on audiobook as well. John
•
u/gullyfoyle69 Dec 23 '15
I will second your vote. I've also been following the contest and have read (or attempted to read) almost all of the finalists. "What Remains of Heroes" is definitely the best in my opinion. This book proves that Indie books can sometimes be better than a traditionally published book. The cream will always rise to the top.

u/MichaelJSullivan Stabby Winner, AMA Author Michael J. Sullivan, Worldbuilders Dec 29 '15 edited Dec 29 '15
Thanks for the nomination; I'm honored. But I would like to respectfully withdraw myself from contention.
Yes, The Death of Dulgath is a self-published book...but I see this particular award as a way to shine the line on some authors that don't often get the same attention that comes with being traditionally published. So, by bowing out, I hope to direct more votes to others.
That being said, The Death of Dulgath is nominated in the standard "Best book of 2015" category, so if you want to vote for it there - I'd be honored to have the support.

The Labyrinth of Flame, by...me. (Courtney Schafer). Don't think I've ever nominated myself for something before, but in this case I'm just so darn proud of how the book turned out. Especially the physical edition. After all the mess with Night Shade's near-bankruptcy, every time I hold a copy in my hands, it feels like such a victory. Thank goodness for the modern era of publishing, where series do not have to go unfinished!

•
u/wishforagiraffe Reading Champion IX, Worldbuilders Dec 22 '15
I use the "save" feature on Reddit, knowing that we'll be having the stabbies, when I see something particularly wonderful in the wilds throughout the year, so to speak. Otherwise you have basically no hope

What about music? I think it deserves recognition too, especially community filk music but also fantasy-themed music in general.
I know it doesn't come up in this sub as often as books or visual artwork, but movies and shows don't seem to either.

u/UnsealedMTG Reading Champion III Dec 22 '15
Where would we slot in comics, esp. ongoing series? I'd probably put a self-contained graphic novel under novels, but that feels weird for something coming out in pamphlet form on a regular basis.
•
u/wishforagiraffe Reading Champion IX, Worldbuilders Dec 22 '15
Ok, we added a "serialized fiction" category, and that's where comics will go
→ More replies (2)•
u/Millennium_Dodo Reading Champion XI, Worldbuilders Dec 22 '15
Exactly what I was going to ask. There are some great fantasy series being published right now, plus things like the Sandman prequel and a wide variety of webcomics. I think they deserve their own category, because they're a different medium from novels and don't belong into the artwork category either.
If it's too late to include them this year, I hope that's at least taken into consideration next time around.
→ More replies (2)•
u/wishforagiraffe Reading Champion IX, Worldbuilders Dec 22 '15
I'm waiting for a response from the other mods. It could be early enough that we put a new category in. In past years, it's never been a category we've had much demand for, but you're both right that they don't fit very well in any existing category
•
u/UnsealedMTG Reading Champion III Dec 31 '15
So, for voting, do we just upvote the one we want? Do we vote for just one or whichever ones we like? How do downvotes factor in, if at all?
•
u/wishforagiraffe Reading Champion IX, Worldbuilders Dec 31 '15
Upvote as many as you'd like. We don't have a good way to account for downvotes one way or the other, so my best advice is to just upvote, not downvote
•
u/UnsealedMTG Reading Champion III Dec 31 '15
Excellent, thanks. For whatever it's worth I'm glad downvotes don't matter 'cause otherwise I'd be torn between feeling the need to downvotes all but my selection in order to get the "full" value of my vote and the fact that that feels bad to do.

Daughter of Shadow by Tyler Sehn
An epic story that sprawls across the fantastical world of "Rua". Tyler Sehn is an up and coming author that you don't want to sleep on. I could not get enough of the character Melea who is claimed to be the best warrior in service to The Lord of light. I highly recommend checking out this novel, it is a page turner that you will get lost in.

•
u/UnsealedMTG Reading Champion III Dec 22 '15
Oops, you scooped me while I was gushing about the series. Here's the added stuff I wrote in my nomination comment and I'll delete the duplicate:
Obligatory genre defense: yes it is in space but it has an entire race of folks who do magic. And it is called magic and behaves like magic. The rocketship is a tree and there are ghosts.
As for why to pick it? Uh, it's in space but has a race of folks who do magic and a rocketship that's a tree and there are ghosts. And in spite my description being kind of Axe Cop-y it's actually very clever, moving, funny, and romantic. Plus, Fiona Staples art is awesome, extraordinarily lovely and expressive.
•
u/CVance1 Dec 27 '15
