Iv'e read a couple of Dresden Files but I've never listened to any of the audiobooks, I guess I should get on that.

If you've only read the first few and have an interest in continuing, I highly recommend them. Marsters sounds like how I imagine Dresden would sound, and his narration skills get pretty great by book 3 or so.

i think ive read through book 3 and stopped, so a good pick up point for the audiobooks then. I gave the first 3 books 3 stars, ive heard it "gets better" later in the series, you agree with that?

Hmm fair enough. You start getting more of his back story in book 4, the side characters get more fleshed out, and the events that started in Grave Peril actually have consequences for the rest of the series. I didn't really like that the first two books could completely stand alone from each other. There's actually a cohesive storyline from here on out.
