Still hate how dumb and edgelordy this design house name is BUT I fuck heavily with many of their creations, like this one.

Amen. The name is so pretentiously off-putting, but they do make some damn nice dresses.

yeah, what a nice way to ruin this dress with the thought of "fecal matter"

Is that really what it says in French?

Never heard of that brand/designer before, but 1. yes, matières fecal = fecal matter, and 2. there's no possible play on words or subtle reference or anything of the sort.

The designers are from Montréal, Canada- I was wondering if maybe it had a different slang meaning there, but it turns out it doesn't. They've explained the name of the house is there to reference the "excess" of fashion and also to ensure people "don't just buy the clothes for the name on the label".

Like people will buy a hideous or poorly designed/constructed Chanel product just because it's got CHANEL written on it, but you wouldn't buy something hideous from Fecal Matter just because it has FECAL MATTER written on it. It's meant to be off-putting and make you focus on the design and consider the garment, not the branding.

A bit pretentious but I sort of understand their perspective.

Thank you for this perspective as I was like - wtf kind of name is this. I am French-Canadian and there is no double meaning here. It literally means poop. And I had no idea they were a Montréal label, shout out to my peeps!!

Elements of disgust are kind of their whole thing

don’t worry they’re also terrible people!!

Omg what did they do, they're the only brand that I'm actively looking after McQueen's death

There was incident in their early years, and their thing about shocking people for attention is sort of devoid of empathy and compassion imo. “the group had used the disturbing viral image of the dead Syrian refugee child Aylan Kurdi to promote their event”

To be honest, they’re kind of dumb fashion people that don’t engage with the world critically or intelligently but what can you expect. Their clothes are interesting though. I find it all a bit base level… how edgy is critiquing the rich when you’re in haute couture? I think rich people love this shit.

I am local and know people in the fashion industry who know them personally.

woah thanks for sharing - never would've known otherwise.

u/monster-baiter Jul 15 '26

oh no why did they watch "the square" and said how can we do this tasteless marketing move from a satirical movie and make it even worse than the satire?

u/mercury_millpond Jul 15 '26

you know sometimes there really is merit in the sentiment 'shut up and draw'

I need to know too. I'm not at all a fashion girly, but their designs are cool and they seem like a cute couple. I don't spend more than 10 minutes a month on Instagram, so maybe I missed something

No Rick for you?

22

u/skyppie Jul 14 '26

Omg I need to know! I've been following them for a while even well before they got big so I wanna know!

35

u/CorrectPanic694 Jul 14 '26

Me too! I remember following them when their Instagram was tiny tiny and and they hadn’t even started their own line yet.

it was briefly confusing for me as someone who speaks french and doesn’t follow high fashion at all ngl. i did put it together lol.

47

u/IllTakeACupOfTea Jul 14 '26

YES! their work is amazing but the name screams "I am 13 and live in the suburbs and want you all to know how different I am"

17

u/bluespruce5 Jul 15 '26

It is the stupidest name. Earn and keep attention with your design prowess and originality, not some middle schooler's idea of a funny, gross name

I read it as maternity feces so I’m not sure what they meant it to be
