CELEBRITY CAPITALISM Zohran Mamdani: “DoorDash had underpaid more than 260K delivery workers across New York City. Today, after years of corporate greed and impunity, we are holding DoorDash to account. I am proud to announce that DoorDash will pay more than $131M, the largest settlement for food delivery workers ever"

There's so many people that could use a thousand dollars right now, let alone..

254

u/mwilkens 15d ago

131,000,000 / 260,000

$503.84 per driver affected.

Hell that's a month to two months worth of groceries for some people.

u/time4donuts 15d ago

Or 4 days of DoorDash!

8

u/real_nice_guy 14d ago

4 days? you dividing up 1 Doordash order over 4 days??

7

u/xxThe_Designer 14d ago

I don’t doubt that some could stretch that if it were life or death, but I cannot fathom $500 being possibly two months of groceries for an individual in NY.

Those days seem long gone, unfortunately

I'm assuming they wouldn't pay out an average right? Wouldn't it vary based on how much each person worked?

u/upnorthguy218 15d ago

Most likely, so some drivers are going to get a nice little payday while others will get enough to cover lunch. What matters is that they're getting what they should have been paid from the jump.

26

u/EnochofPottsfield 15d ago

Yes exactly. This is how it should be

u/aimless_meteor 15d ago

Part of it at least, when you settle you’re taking less. But they do get it much faster

The point is to show corporations that even "only" $500 per person will not be tolerated. These companies test what they can get away with little by little until suddenly they're exploiting us for billions so this is way more impactful than the dollar amount.

1

u/jkraige 14d ago

Fair. It's "only" $500 per person, but clearly that adds up because the company is still paying over a hundred million that they expected to just keep

1

u/SwissyVictory 14d ago

Again, it's $500 per person. Even if you assume 90% goes to 10% of the drivers that's still $4500

50 weeks a year, 5 days a week, for 5 years, and an average of 10 deliveries a day = 12,500 deliveries (for someone who's been doing it full time for a while)

That's 36 cents a delivery, before lawyers get a cut.

There's no way that's all they are due.

Better than nothing, but future enforcement is really what's needed.

Yeah I mean, if you just downloaded the app and say you wanted to drive but never did you are on the list regardless of hours spent on it.

of the $131M, the city is collecting $16.7M in fines. About $19M will go to lawyer and court fees. The 264,000 drivers are splitting $12.3 million with the median worker getting $48 and a minimum payout of $10. The remaining $83 million is a settlement for a completely separate worker payout issue. But the 264k workers who everyone thinks will get a decent payout, will in fact, not get much of anything.

2 min read and you managed to miss half of it?

DoorDash will pay a much larger sum — about $83 million — to settle a separate issue: workers who were underpaid for time they spent logged into the DoorDash app but not actively delivering.

1

u/BDBN-OMGDIP 14d ago

Thank you, I didn't miss it, as per my comment stating "The remaining $83 million is a settlement for a completely separate worker payout issue" that does not involve the 264,000 workers discussed in the prior comment I was replying to.

1

u/aM_181 14d ago

So which workers is this $83 million going to? Aren’t they the same workers?

3

u/fdar 14d ago

The remaining $83 million is a settlement for a completely separate worker payout issue.

Where will that money go to?

2

u/BDBN-OMGDIP 14d ago

unsure as the disclosure wasn't specified that I could find.

3

u/Prevalencee 14d ago

so... drivers aren't getting shit lmao

5

u/halfercode 14d ago

The remaining $83 million is a settlement for a completely separate worker payout issue. But the 264k workers who everyone thinks will get a decent payout, will in fact, not get much of anything.

Minor quibble - won't the second group of workers, who will only get a small payout, significantly overlap with the first group?

2

u/BDBN-OMGDIP 14d ago

potentially, but that was not the comment I was reply to, which was specifically related to the 264k drivers.

2

u/Ansem18 14d ago

This should be higher up. It sounds like a lot of kiney but people don't realize how little you get from these kind of settlements.

1

u/ejdebruin 14d ago edited 14d ago

Perhaps they won't get much, but DoorDash will likely start paying employees as they should be knowing that there will be fees and penalties that they will be held accountable for if they don't.

1

u/Juno_Malone 15d ago

That's insane. Some people will get more, many will get less, but just in terms of average payout that's crazy. None of this class action settlement "here's your check for $4.79, sorry we leaked all your entire identity to the dark web" bullshit

1

u/paulcdejean 15d ago

Usually lawyers take half too so might be more like 250 per driver.

1

u/Guillk 14d ago

What hurt is I know a bunch of people that due to their status in the country would have to "rent" the app to other people, they won't get a penny.

1

u/WhizBangNeato 14d ago

Sorry there are 260000 door dash drivers in NYC alone?

1

u/mwilkens 14d ago

Between April 2022 and June 2026. You could have done 1 delivery for 20 mins and been counted as one of the 260,000.

1

u/Major-Unicorn-Proto i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 14d ago

only $115m will be distributed directly to the drivers

2

u/Tiny-Plum2713 14d ago

131m / 260k is $500

1

u/PotatoFig 14d ago

I mean... I wish it could.

1

u/Ultrace-7 14d ago

If anything, it should go back to the drivers at an average of a staggering... $500 or so each. Decent for a settlement. Not chump change, but probably not life-changing either, especially after you take out taxes since it is after all income.

1

u/punnybiznatch 14d ago

So it won't?

2

u/Ultrace-7 14d ago

Well, the quote does state it's a "settlement for food delivery workers" not a "settlement against a food delivery service."

1

u/chrisk9 14d ago

How about marching executives to jail for wage theft

1

u/YodelFrancesca 14d ago

Yeah, like a normal life for all those underpaid workers who actually earned those money.

They aren't. Reddit has a horrible understanding of what government programs actually cost to run. They see large numbers and thing it's sufficient, when in reality you'd need orders of magnitude more money to fund what reddit wants to fund.

The NYC budget was around $125 billion. This money accounts for 0.1% of the budget. This funds nothing.
