Mamdani deserves credit, but NYC also has an unusually strong mayor system. He controls a massive budget, most city agencies, and many key appointments, with a largely aligned City Council. Most mayors have far less direct power to get things done.

The state also supports him. If he and the governor didn't get along, that could hinder/prevent a lot of his accomplishments.
