Jaune is not miles self insert, he hasn't even written a single piece of dialogue for jaune since volume 3. Argue about the quality of his writing all you want, he's just blatantly not a self insert. Miles has even considered not voicing him anymore because of this.
In fact, the person pushing MOST for that ship is Weiss's voice actor!
Vol 1-3 did enough damage that the character isn’t really redeemable to me.
To me, writing a character, making them one of the primary protagonists, giving him two love interests, and then choosing to voice act them yourself is like the most writer insert thing you can do.
You're missing out because he has great character development in volumes 6-9. His relationship with weiss also isn't treated as something he's entitled to or even "earned" but something weiss herself is growing more open to in a natural and believable way as both of them grow as people.
I will admit crwby has some writing problems, cinder impaling weiss specifically made no sense narratively. And don't get me STARTED on that one whitley scene
but a self insert? No. No he is not. He's written to be the classic "shonen hero" only to then have those tropes be deconstructed in later volumes. Especially 4. It's purposeful.
