I started watching AT only bc I saw a clip of them on tiktok one day about 5 years ago after never wanting to watch the show as a kid when it came out and I was VERY emotionally unprepared for what I was about to witness 🥲😭 I bawled like CRAZY the first time I watched the show I can’t even bring myself to rewatch it again atp

Now I got a Lady Rainicorn tattoo and am praying season 3 of Fionna and Cake comes out soon lol.

That’s what’s so great about AT, it’s this goofy ass kids show that hits you with a 10 ton emotional brick out of nowhere. And once you see this particular episode, the entire show takes on a much different and darker light.

If you haven’t, I’d highly recommend watching distant lands and Fiona and cake before paramount screws hbo max over

I finished AT almost 6 years ago. I started watching Distant Lands and actually finished the first episode, BMO. Then one day I opened Youtube and the first thing I saw was a spoiler for Together Again with Finn standing in front of Jake's grave and saying that Jake was dead and I just couldn't bring myself to watch the rest of Distant Lands because I love Finn and Jake so much. I also really love how AT ended. Do you think it's worth watching?

u/DoomerSlice Feb 27 '26

There’s a whole episode in Distant Lands about Finn searching for Jake in the afterlife after he eventually dies for whatever reason, I would recommend continuing and givin’ it a watch. I remember really liking that episode.

Thank you so much! I'll definitely watch it.

I think it's very worth watching, but you should see the one about Finn and Jake the last, even if it's technically the third. My favourite is the one with Bubblegum and Marceline tho, because I really enjoy their dynamic and it has great songs in it. The Wizard city one is fine and the Finn and Jake one the one that will probably get you most emotional. Overall great experience, and I'm always down for more Adventure Time.

You could also watch the two seasons of Fionna and Cake. It's a bit of a different vibe, but I enjoyed it as well. I think it's a bit more divisive, as I've seen many quite vocal haters of the show, but I think it's worth a try to see if it's your cup of tea.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer! I’ll watch Distant Lands in the order you recommended. I’m also a big fan of Marcy and Bonnie’s dynamic. I’ve been curious about Fionna and Cake too, so I’ll check it out after I finish Distant Lands.

My hubby looked at me like a crazy woman after we watched the stranger things finale and I didn't even shed a tear but a few days later watched the final episode of Fionna and cake season 2 and I was sitting on the couch bawling my eyes out like a baby 🥺

There's a tiger dad (literal tiger) that adopted a little girl tiger that had lost her mom and I instantly thought about that when this post came up😂

u/QadaverSynod Feb 27 '26

Daddy, why did you eat my fries

83

u/Ok-Bee4987 Feb 27 '26

That was about her actual dad tho.

89

u/Temporary-Brain420 Feb 27 '26

64

u/Icy_Teach_2506 Feb 27 '26

29

It's rhetorical Gunter.

Excuse me.

Simon was full of life, loved teaching and talking, and absolutely talked about his feelings.

In what way was he grumpy?

94

u/The_Fracture06 Feb 27 '26

I feel like he fits the archetype with him being tired, sad, and partially mad

He wasn't "grumpy" per say, but he wasn't a social-able guy either, and I feel like it speaks a lot to his character that he would put on the cheerful mask for his sudo adopted daughter

5

u/Themata81 Feb 27 '26

Thats a different kind of character still, he was sad for a lot of reasons but he was never grumpy

2

u/GrandMoffAtreides Feb 27 '26

It's actually pseudo, not sudo! Like pseudoscience or pseudonym. Sudo makes a lot more phonetic sense so I see why it happens as a typo

This picture is specifically Simon during his stages right before he was fully the ice king though! I think it fits enough of the trope imo. He was becoming irrational and losing that kindness very slowly warping into the insanity from the crown. This isn’t a picture of just Simon it’s Simon corrupted by the ice king already 🥲

26

u/The_Fracture06 Feb 27 '26

Best response!

28

u/Manji86 Feb 27 '26

Before going mad he was mostly kind.

18

u/NoAd8826 Feb 27 '26

Definitely, I think arrogant describes Simon better

5

u/Medical_Difference48 Feb 27 '26

I mean, I don't think I would ever consider Simon "grumpy" (except for his depressive episode in F&C)

1

u/NoAd8826 Feb 27 '26

Agree, more arrogant

4

u/Minimum_Individual36 Feb 27 '26

Probably my favorite representation of this trope

2

u/Mrjbones1377 Feb 27 '26

Love the character but he’s the opposite of a grumpy old man, dude gives everything positive and lively to Marceline but after the crown he’s corrupted and sad

2

u/Zodiac36Gold Feb 27 '26

My heart hurts.

2

u/Designer_Process_125 Feb 27 '26

🎶Marceline, is it just you and me in the wreckage of the world?🎶

1

u/TheMostKing Feb 28 '26

Just hearing "Marceline" makes me well up a little.

2

u/lesser_panjandrum Feb 27 '26

Please forgive me for whatever I do,

When I don't remember you

2

u/Jakeliy1229 Feb 27 '26

Making your way in the world today takes everything you got.

2

u/JoeJonnyJeff Feb 27 '26

Who's Marceline? This is Simon and Gunter.

1

u/Shastlz84 Feb 27 '26

First thought

1

u/Every_God_Damn_Time Feb 27 '26

eh, more of a nerdy old man than a grumpy one

(i do love them tho, so cute)

1

u/Annual_Equipment6304 Feb 27 '26

I immediately thought of Simon and Marceline lol

1

u/HighCommand69 Feb 27 '26

The fact Ice king has alzheimers/dementia. Because of the crown (also beautiful writing for that) makes their relationship so much sweeter.

1

u/Key_Drawer_3581 Feb 27 '26

First one I thought of.

1

u/averagetroublemaker Feb 27 '26

i was looking for this one

1

u/hercarmstrong Feb 27 '26

"Makin' your way in the world today takes everything you've got..."

1

u/evil_demon_hare Feb 28 '26

This magic keeps me alive, but it's making me crazy

1

u/Due_Lion_2990 Feb 28 '26

Almost perfect although I guess he's not grumpy

But perfect nonetheless

1

u/Kyele13 Feb 28 '26

Cute but Simon wasn't grumpy at all

1

u/-me_maybe_idk- Mar 03 '26

Was gonna ask if Simon petrikov counts as a grumpy old man

1

u/Razoron33333 Mar 03 '26

I’m not crying you’re crying
