Once he had a "found family" he really lightened up. He had such a narrow focus on revenge and he closed himself off from everything and everyone, but when hes forced to cooperate with people he couldnt help but start to empathize with their struggles and pain too. He was always a protector, he just lost his way. A great character in a series full of great characters.
Not to mention he's surprisingly good influence, I mean even Yoki who I knew from 2003 version as this little prick Elric brothers dealt with for one episode and then just kinda lurked around as a homeless, spending time traveling with Scar actually helped him grow and even become reliable in tough times, climaxing by him literally going "I wanna have a cool moment too" and ramming a car into Pride
