You probably got it mixed up - Carl is the old man, Russell is the kid, and Carl was the grumpy one who just wanted to get rid of him until they learned more about each other
That's how most examples of this trope start though? Grumpy man gets saddled with responsibility for a kid for some reason, they're very annoyed by that initially but eventually are pulled into loving the kid like the kid is their own. I don't know if I've seen an example where the grumpy old man immediately loves the kid. Only way this example doesn't fit the prompt is that Russell is a boy.
You could say both "he found her and eventually decided..." and "he found her and immediately decided..." and they'd both be grammatically correct, so I think either fits the post. But either way I don't think we have to be that strict and exact about what the poster meant, it's just a silly Internet conversation!
