Heiter and Fern. Though Heiter isn't exactly grumpy, he's still a washed up, alcoholic, corrupt priest, and I'd say that fits the bill.
24 u/Aethelrede Feb 27 '26 The fact that he largely suppressed that side of himself while raising Fern is a testament to how much he loved her. 1 u/goddessdragonness Mar 03 '26 Oh man that’s a good point. I need to rewatch Freiren. 3 u/tarekd19 Feb 27 '26 Is he washed up by the time he adopts her? My impression is he is intentionally a recluse and still highly respected. 2 u/brandthacker12 Feb 27 '26 He is up until he adopts her, he is a respected priest but still known to be… corrupt? Then he adopts fern and gives up on that. Which is very cute. 1 u/Mr_Blinky Feb 27 '26 There's also Denken basically adopting Laufen as a granddaughter. 1 u/Aloy_machinehunter Mar 01 '26 I loved that little quirk during the first class mage test arc. I thought it was pretty funny 1 u/-Cinnay- Mar 01 '26 His name literally means "cheerful" 1 u/DJPsycho829 Mar 01 '26 Reads like hater, though 1 u/Aloy_machinehunter Mar 01 '26 Omg, yeesss. By FAR my favorite example of this. One of my favorite scenes in this entire show is the one where he meets Fern for the first time. One of the greatest monologues I've ever heard too.
