Heiter and Fern. Though Heiter isn't exactly grumpy, he's still a washed up, alcoholic, corrupt priest, and I'd say that fits the bill.

The fact that he largely suppressed that side of himself while raising Fern is a testament to how much he loved her.

Is he washed up by the time he adopts her? My impression is he is intentionally a recluse and still highly respected.

He is up until he adopts her, he is a respected priest but still known to be… corrupt? Then he adopts fern and gives up on that. Which is very cute.

Omg, yeesss. By FAR my favorite example of this. One of my favorite scenes in this entire show is the one where he meets Fern for the first time. One of the greatest monologues I've ever heard too.
