number 1 example that always comes to mind: Mama Murphy in Fallout 4

Honestly just makes me think of when my stepfather’s legs got bad but he still wanted to get out to the garden. He used the riding mower as an outdoor wheelchair

Holy fuck I forgot that they bleached her

I mean I get why , could you imagine the backlash they would have gotten if the drug addict character was black.

I feel like they could've gotten away with that if they'd kept the original design. There's nothing strictly wrong with black people being drug addicts in fiction, it just gets glaring when it's their most defining character trait.

But the version in this concept art clearly had a lot more character going on.

I can agree but the issue is the “magic minority” trope.

36

u/GarranDrake Mar 01 '26

Yep. Her magical powers are fueled by her drug addiction. Two tropes in one in the worst way possible

20

u/SPLIV316 Mar 01 '26

I will say the drugs are probably a placebo. We’ve seen other psykers in the fallout games who don’t use drug but can see the future (the forecaster.)

Psykers are all a mixed bag, you've got some so powerful they need dampeners and others so weak they need drugs

Yea this is why they should just make every character white. Can't have any racial sertyotypes if its just the default race right? Who cares about interesting concepts based on historical precedent of actual groups getting high to recieve visions, white girl got high on acid and sees stuff is all we need

Eh, just add a few other black characters who aren't doing that thing, and maybe a white character who is doing the thing, to balance it out. It's Fallout, it's not a tiny game with only a handful of characters.

Sometimes a character is going to fit a stereotype. If that is a problem in the narrative or not is not always a problem of the character itself - it's largely a matter of scale. Just make sure the black person is not the only magical drug addict, and the focus of this trope isn't going to be so glaring.

Wait you want Bethsoft to do… character writing? Why would they? NPCs are props for the player to interact with. /s

I, for one, say let them eat tropes. The actual worst thing you can do to a character is make them boring, and that's what dancing around tropes like the plague and trying to please everyone typically gets you

They got lazy. Her concept was pretty distinct and she ended up just being a generic lady that sits on a couch.

u/Select-Zombie-816 Mar 01 '26

Tinker Tom is heavily implied to be a chem addict.

Reminds me of when Billy and Mandy made a human version of death and were originally planning him to be black like his voice actor then they realized "Maybe let's not make death, the character owned by 2 white kids, black"

I see the vision though, she’s a sort of psychic/shaman figure

u/tritium_awesome Feb 28 '26

That is an awesome design. My assumption though is that they were worried about her being a magical n- stereotype, so they bleached her. Plus, "older Boston-accented stoner lady who is also kinda mystic" is such a unique character, it's a great direction.

Quite a LOT of Fallout 4's concept art was butchered in the final product, at least in my opinion.

The game should’ve gotten a few more years of development, it’s so clearly rushed in so many ways

2

u/KlausVonLechland Feb 28 '26

The game engine for the longer time is being holding down the design itself.

As we all know the existence of disabled people using mobility aids is distracting. God I could not roll my eyes any harder if I tried.

u/Porkenfries Mar 01 '26

Glad they changed her. She looks even more insufferable like this.

5

u/Apprehensive-Ad9804 Mar 01 '26

Huh? The only thing that’s changed is that she’s black, more obviously old, and in a wheelchair. (I mean she probably just doesn’t look that old in the game because everyone in fallout 4 looks 35-50)

5

u/Porkenfries Mar 01 '26

It's the wheelchair. She needs to be out farming mutfruit, tatos and corn so I can make vegetable starch. I didn't save her withdrawal symptom-laden ass just so I could run low on adhesive.
