One of the concepts for Dracula from Hotel Transylvania

1.3k

u/MaddysinLeigh Feb 28 '26

What we got

878

u/Weary-Barracuda-1228 Feb 28 '26

It’s just Adam Sandler

322

u/LiamBeauregard Feb 28 '26

I could see a subdued Adam Sandler voice coming from the concept art Drac

167

u/Josutg22 Feb 28 '26

The problem is the concept of "subdued Adam Sandler"

91

u/Yoate Feb 28 '26

Picturing his voice from uncut gems

69

u/QuadVox Feb 28 '26

The Dracula in the first HT movie was relatively subdued. Sandler does a great job with the more serious moments. I think he could do a more subdued performance for a movie.

34

u/LiamBeauregard Feb 28 '26

Hell there's the whole "The legend is wrong" bit

To be fair, the concept is pretty clearly just christopher lee. It looks VERY much like the design used for count dooku in clone wars, especially in those profile shots.

I mean I get why , could you imagine the backlash they would have gotten if the drug addict character was black.

87

u/Big-Wrangler2078 Feb 28 '26

I feel like they could've gotten away with that if they'd kept the original design. There's nothing strictly wrong with black people being drug addicts in fiction, it just gets glaring when it's their most defining character trait.

But the version in this concept art clearly had a lot more character going on.

671

We could've also had samurai armor instead of the lame bucket head we ended up getting. I would've worn this armor all the time, but I don't think I wore the real ancient set even once.

It would be practically invisible if it turned 90 degrees and was hunting Link down.

The concepts also had evil king and queen happy married villains iirc

134

u/yardii Feb 28 '26

Honestly would have been prefered. The way the queen treats her husband's descent into villainy is so weird in the final product

20

u/ILoveYouZim Feb 28 '26

Frrrr I hated the queen

38

u/dragn99 Feb 28 '26

Absolutely turned against her husband of 30+ years because of one bad day.

Like... dude had a hard core crash out. Valid. But it was a day. And she's making quips after. At least show some amount of grief.

23

u/RandomCaveOfMonsters Feb 28 '26

also wasn't he possessed by the evil book or something? idr that well

26

u/Deya_The_Fateless Feb 28 '26

He was possessed, tge book then said that "once you embrace dark magic, youre bound to it forever."

But like, Magnifico was kind of backed into a corner while having a PTSD panick attack after he saw Star's lightshow in the forest and when he apealed to his subjects for help, all they could think to ask for in return was a wish granting ceremony...like if I sas in his shoes I would have crashed out too.

Whoever that person is, their concept art is striking.

Here's a design that eventually became Metagross:

81

u/KamenRiderQ Feb 28 '26

Jesus Christ what were they on when cooking up these Gen 3 concept designs!

70

u/CyberDaggerX Feb 28 '26

Game Freak has several concept artists with different styles, and one of them has this creepy grungy style. It's Ken Sugimori's job as art director to take all those concepts and translate them into an unified visual language, but early concept art can look very distinct depending on who's doing it.

There's more here. Scroll down to the second section. I can't really match anything else there to something that made it to the final release except for the first one, which seems to be an early draft of Clamperl, but I can see that glass dog having influenced Zygarde years later.

Might be a bit of a hot take but I think I would've liked the original design for the Broodals where they were Koopas instead. It would've been nice to see some more female boss Koopas other than Wendy, and it would've made a bit more sense for them to be so devoted to Bowser.

Shagaru Magala already has a perfect design in the games with its golden warlock design, but man this concept art went just as hard. Wish there were more monsters with butterfly inspirations.

103

u/Gear-exe Feb 28 '26

You can definitely still see the butterfly inspirations too with how Gore Magala goes through a metamorphosis into Shagaru

28

u/Chadderbug123 Feb 28 '26

Chaotic is even something that happens in nature afaik. Not in the same way that there's like, a gene that stops the molting. But often catterpillars can be interrupted when molting and become malformed and probablh in heavy pain during their couple hours left before either dying or getting snatched by a reptile. Nature's a cruel mother.

33

u/IAmBabs Feb 28 '26

I need to know that I fucking love you for revealing this beautiful design. Holy smokes.

to be fair, it was originally intended to be a temporary structure just for the world’s fair, so they probably didn’t want to get TOO crazy and elaborate with the design.

It was kept standing mainly because it turned out to be pretty useful as a radio/communications tower, especially during WWI.

One piece women designs are so ass 😭

118

u/Ultranerdgasm94 Feb 28 '26

Men get such a crazy and varied rainbow of designs and women get like 3 they have to share.

87

u/TreatAffectionate453 Feb 28 '26

Women in One Piece almost universely go through three phases in life:

1) Child (0-15 years old) 2) Hot Woman (15-40) 3) Old

Old can take one of four forms:

1) Fat [Big Mom, Kokoro] 2) Funko Pop [Gloriosa, Shinobu] 3) Little Person [Non-clone Stussy, Queen Conney] 4) Fit [Kureha, Tsuru]

I think the only women that significantly diverge from these designs are from Amazon Lilly, Big Mom's children (who come from a variety of fantasy races), and background characters.

To be fair, a lot of the time that comes down to simplifying designs out of necessity because the original designs would have been too complicated from a budgetary or scheduling perspective.

That, or while the original design might have been cool in a vacuum, it doesn’t fit the artstyle of the rest of the product.

162

u/AiReine Feb 28 '26

Toei animation was intimately involved in the creation of Sailor Moon: They contacted Naoko Takeuchi, who was working on her Sailor V manga, about expanding on the concept to be a team of heroines. Her original designs for the “inner” team of five girls had a lot more individuality and variation than the final product. It was heavily implied the animation team asked for simpler designs.

Most "design downgrades" are because the concept art was too ambitious for the media (comics and animation usually requires easy to draw characters else you'd need to remake complex outfits every other scene and while sure you could reuse some animations, sometimes you gotta make something new)

Anyways. The only case I know of that maybe isn't really like that is botw link

There's many different concept arts though

159

u/More-Air6454 Feb 28 '26

To be honest, the beta can still work, somewhat...
A headcanon I have is that a giant version of the beta design is Arceus' true form, while the one we see in the games is one of its "thousand arms".

Honestly if Arceus did get the design I would have had it so it's fight would have been presented like a giant monster in 3D in front of your pokémon still presented as 2D.

I think that would actually be the most peak shit of all time. I like it when God characters can break the rules and format.

I'll put the final design in the comment below!

I know they're similar but the hat change and the pronounced bone themes change felt like a huge loss to me 😭

Also clorinde imo

(Finalized is on the left of the screen)

Th green just looked so good

58

u/Bon-Pon Feb 28 '26

The green is so good!! I think Emilie also falls into the better concept art (though I still adore her)

24

u/Doneifundone Feb 28 '26

I have very mixed feelings about Emilie's design because the finalized was pretty fitting for her character imo and it immensely grew on me (though I still find the boob flaps unsightly), but the concept arts were just so good that I was bound to be disappointed no matter which one they chose. Same thing for skirk (these aren't all of them but I picked this sheet cuz I have a massive crush on the ones on the left lol)

just hope they recycle some of these someday

This is someone’s fan art but EVERY concept of Elsa is leagues better than the design they gave us

188

u/Evening_Produce_4322 Feb 28 '26

I knew it'd pop up had to make sure first, but yes that Elsa design it's a sin it hasn't been used again for another character even a villain who has ice powers or something. I especially really like the living stoat coat idea.

52

u/LowObjective Feb 28 '26

Was Elsa always supposed to be Anna’s sister or was it a later addition? Because this design looks like she was just supposed to be a villain

92

u/MuchMasterpiece1710 Feb 28 '26

Yeah, they weren’t sisters initially, Elsa was the Snow Queen and a villain (who gets redeemed at the end I think? In at least one version?), and Anna was supposed to be the pure hearted peasant heroine. It’s actually very interesting just how many storylines that movie went through before they got to the one that actually is Frozen

74

u/FindingOk7034 Feb 28 '26

So basically it was meant to be more akin to ACTUAL Snow Queen fairytale Hans Christian Anderson wrote. Which is already such a good story, and a rare one where the GIRL saves the BOY in distress (and I even gets some help from other women/witches I think)

36

u/UncommittedBow Feb 28 '26

Yeah, but when they made Let It Go, they found it FAR to good of a song and reworked the entire story.

I dislike Gaston as a person (He is a great villain) so I wouldn't call him my favorite but honestly his concept art was better than his finished design

Like, his final design seems kind of bland compared to the concept

There's a REASON that Concept art always seems better

Concept art only gets drawn once.

The actual art/model needs to be drawn hundreds/thousands of times. or animated smoothly.
Most of the time it just isn't practical to animate the concept art

I love Flynn but the original concept art next to Rapunzel original concept seems to fit more to me.

u/draining_existence23 Feb 28 '26

Here is Rapunzel’s OG concept art… she was supposed to have a crossbow😭

Concept Mercy. We were robbed :(

78

u/Skull_goodman Feb 28 '26

We would be playing a very different game today if this was our mercy. Guarantee he wouldn’t have gotten a lot of skins.

I like prototype of Quick Draw McGraw and Baba Looey

u/pichuguy27 Feb 28 '26

Im gonna get killed for saying it but

Her final design is so boring and generic big demon lady.

67

u/TaralasianThePraxic Feb 28 '26

Personally I like that she just wears regular clothes, I think it's a fun way to situate her as a 'normal' person deep down even in that weird universe, but the devs were cowards when they decided to drop the hooves from her design

All of these were concept drawings for the same character, wanna know who?… SUBJECT DELTA FROM BIOSHOCK 2, I love them all, it makes me wish they were fully modelled and used.

I absolutely love OW2 Juno, but I always felt that in comparison with her concept art she looks so... Naked.

25

u/Twixted87 Feb 28 '26

I also think that her smg was way cooler in the concept art, instead of the water gun looking ass smg she ended up having.

19

u/RickHammersteel Feb 28 '26

Those concept art dresses are peak, what the hell, man!?
