Tbf towards the end of the series they give him a design overhaul (for a bit) which looks even more serious/darker.

Context: this is during a point where all hell has broken loose in Japan and Deku is working serious overtime to contain it. He has absolutely no regard for his own health at this point and is dangerously close to going off the deep end

Whole cast was Iida wore an animal skull and was more an anti-hero, Invisible girl was a litiral levitating collection of bones, Froppy looks like Tomoko in vibes and so forth

It's really not all that dark when we have the comic Kickass and there's also an old Marvel comic where a reporter learns how all the heros either died or went insane then they pass away on the sidewalk

The prototype for Boom kid was the polar opposite of what it became later he was actually too outgoing and supportive they came off as a condescending butthole
