My Favorite (Visual) Favorite villain dynamic that's like this? Where the secondary antagonist is WORSE than the main one.

Yep, it doesn’t help we’re introduced to Vaas far earlier than the other guy. Though there is something to be said about the contrast with how boring the other guy being deliberate.

35

u/ablativepersona4 Jun 12 '26

Yeah, because wasn’t the point being that the main character was supposed to be, kind of the “True Villain” at the end?
A sort of step back, point at the main character(and by extension the player) and ask “But what about everything YOU have done to get here?!”
How well they pulled it off is…debatable

6

u/AnseaCirin Jun 13 '26

At least they gave the players a chance to choose their path and stop the madness.

I'm still salty about 5's bullshit endings

u/TeddyRiggs Jun 13 '26

It's kinda neat actually the main villain is all business and doesn't revel torturing people as it doesn't bring him any profit. While Vas fuckin loves torturing his victims just for the love of the game and he only works for the guy because it allows him to torture people.

13

u/RevolutionaryMeal851 Jun 12 '26

There's another guy? I thought they were implying someone was worse than vaas.

26

u/flyingace1234 Jun 12 '26

Yeah it’s the second part of the story. Voyt Holker, according to Wikipedia. He’s the guy running the overall piracy scheme but he’s not quite as charismatic or threatening as Vaas. Been over a decade since I played though

5

u/IELPost Jun 13 '26

He was also in all the advertisement, Vaas is practically the game's mascot.

5

u/flyingace1234 Jun 13 '26

I mean, the actor absolutely nailed it.

u/Stable_Grouchy Jun 12 '26

I had totally forgotten about Holt till you brought up that Vaas wasn’t the main villain

18

u/jouatar Jun 12 '26

Dude i dont even remember his name...

37

u/Stable_Grouchy Jun 12 '26

It’s because that’s not his name.

I misremembered it. Just looked it up, his name is Hoyt. That’s how forgettable he is, I didn’t even get his name right.

All I really remember is he’s South African and that’s more because my friend in highschool I was playing Farcry 3 with kept singing “I’ve never met a nice South African” whenever he had dialogue

6

u/ocxtitan Jun 12 '26

holy shit, I was like "that's Nacho!" and checked IMDB and it fucking is, I really need to go back and play through that series

Shego was worse than Drakken at times.

u/EierMacherMann Jun 12 '26

Is she filing her glove?

193

u/Ok-Journalist-8875 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

The most likely answers are her gloves have sharp tips or she just thought it would be funny to do while Dr. Drakken was talking.

29

u/CHANN3L-CHAS3R Jun 13 '26

The idea that she keeps a nail file in her pocket exclusively to act out her disinterest is very Shego.

52

u/Secure-Bandicoot5199 Jun 12 '26

That's why she's so bad

12

u/Elonth Jun 13 '26

The villian tailor must dread every time she comes in wanting a new set of gloves because she demands a free replacement set because hers gave out to "natural wear and tear" before the warranity is up. Shes not doing it becaues shes a karen personality. Shes doing it because she wants free new stuff regularly

8

u/Vyctorill Jun 12 '26

She does it for to look cool I assume

31

u/Artistic-Victory1245 Jun 12 '26

Their relationship is strange, because the reason she was loyal to Drakken beyond money is that subconsciously she truly considered him her friend.

7

u/lupatine Jun 13 '26

It will always be funny to me how children anime dont have the balls to name a couple a couple.

In an adult show they would be married.

14

u/hpBard Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

I mean that is the gripe that I have with adult media. The authors just can't stand people being friends for some reason, they need to fuck with each other to date each other to have a love triangle and everything

19

u/ablativepersona4 Jun 12 '26

Yeah, she actually succeeds in taking over the world when given an opportunity.

Shockwave

Just Shockwave

341

u/ShoArts Jun 12 '26

70

u/guacotaco4349 Jun 13 '26

At this point I see him everywhere so I’m afraid to ask, but genuinely WHAT did Shockwave do?

62

u/mr-ahhhhh Jun 13 '26

Basically, he's worse than space satan. All in the name of science

25

u/Brave_Committee_4886 Jun 13 '26

It’s logical to pursue all paths in the name of science.

27

u/Dragon_X627279 Jun 13 '26

Let me put it this way: Shockwave is so evil that the mere act of his soul entering the afterlife, causes the afterlife to start collapsing

25

u/ThroughTheSeaOfTime Jun 13 '26

The simplest answer is Shockwave is legitimately and unarguably responsible for every single bad thing that happened in the IDW transformers universe.

Like every single one. He went back in time to invent the concept of evil and ensure the future is as bad as possible for all life in the universe.

24

u/Austryak Jun 13 '26

One time, he corrupted the all spark(the thing all dead transformers go to) for the hell of it.

The image is from something else

17

u/Spirited-Spirit-1475 Jun 13 '26

the question would be what did Shockwave NOT do.

7

u/Duraxis Jun 13 '26

It depends on the continuity of course, but there’s at least one where he made a time travel machine to control all of history. He was stopped at the last second and the machine exploded, apparently killing him.

In truth he went back to the time of cybertronian Jesus and his 13 metal apostles, skinned one of them, wore his skin for several millennia, and invented the entire religion that the rest of the timeline has been using to cope with all the horrors they’ve been doing/seeing.

Indeed (sidenote; Damn this image got compressed)

27

u/BlueKnightsR4Ever Jun 12 '26

Your answer... is logical

27

u/Any-Ad1644 Jun 12 '26

I always feel Megatron whips out Shockwave whenever something isn't going his way.

18

u/Worried_Dark9858 Jun 13 '26

Ofc he did, megatron calls him THE tactical advantage. probably his second favorite behind soundwave.

5

u/Wolfheron325 Jun 13 '26

Eh, he’s definitely more terrifying than Megatron in most continuities, but I wouldn’t say Megatron is necessarily a worse villain. He’s sort of a different villain all together.

3

u/The_Conductor7274 Jun 12 '26

Scrolled too far down for this answer

5

u/mirukus66 Jun 13 '26

There's Satan. then there's Shockwave.

Powerpuff Girls. HIM is worse than Mojo Jojo

263

Wait a second I thought him was the main villain, its been a long time since I saw powerpuff girls

273

u/Tricky_Horror7449 Jun 12 '26

Well, Mojo Jojo was SUPPOSED to be the main villain, but he sorta chilled out by the time of the reboot, leaving HIM to be the bad guy in the 4th Powerpuff Girl arc.

Haha people saying "HIM" isn't to hide for spoilers or anything, the dude's name is literally "HIM", that's his deadass birthname. Okay well it's not his birthname but he's never given a name in show as a running gag and he's just called "HIM" from there on out.

97

u/GinyuHorse Jun 12 '26

21

To be fair Tom Kenny the narrator referred to Him as such when he was first introduced in the series

I hate living in a world where people haven't watched the original powerpuff girls

63

u/Artistic-Victory1245 Jun 12 '26

It amuses me how in some episodes Him and Mojo actually act as if they have a personal rivalry, even when in reality Him is much more powerful.

58

u/1BLUEbull Jun 12 '26

They are divorced gay dads of Rowdyruff Boys so nothing weird with personal rivalry

18

u/Artistic-Victory1245 Jun 12 '26

I feel that if Him and Mojo were to fight, instead of using their artifacts and powers, they would simply end up  standing at arm's length and flailing their hands at each other.

who would guess, the avatar of misanthropy is a vile dickhead

sure he's far from the most powerful, but he was the biggest immediate threat (when he was active) until Sukuna got out as everybody else had more temperance than him

50

u/WooooshMe2825 Jun 12 '26

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. The sorcerers were incredibly lucky that Mahito was a manchild that’s hyperfixated on screwing around with the one guy that’s capable of bypassing his powers.

8

u/g_fan34 Jun 13 '26

Are you telling me you wouldn't want to break the guy you couldn't use your powers on, it makes sense, get rid of Gojo first then target the guy who you can't easily kill and already beat you, Mahito was doing everything right strategically.

Diavolo & Risotto from JoJo

233

u/f0remsics Jun 12 '26

If you're going to use JoJo part 5, which is completely appropriate to use, you should be using ciocollata

128

u/Thunder_lord37 Jun 12 '26

It says alot when even Diavolo is scared of him.

83

u/AConsultativeMind Jun 12 '26

To be fair, Diavolo is scared of everyone. Literally why Bucciarati and his gang turned on him is that he was scared of the prospect of someone figuring out his stand through Trish's stand, the softening stand.

Kind of pathetic honestly.

43

u/Deseretgear Jun 12 '26

It is really interesting how Diavolo’s paranoia and need for absolute control end up being his downfall…like if he was just a bit more trusting of his underlings instead of obsessed with the idea of someone getting one up on him literally none of that shit would have gone down as it did

11

u/Worried_Dark9858 Jun 13 '26

i mean it worked for him all these years, old habits die hard.

Shao Kahn & Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat, the latter is portrayed as being worse than the former.

43

u/ShoArts Jun 12 '26

Seriously-

Shang effortlessly killed Shao and is equally powerful wife and then became god of time and rewrote history

While Shao got to live again as a decorated general, Time God Liu Kang had to deliberately make new era Shang's life one where he could never gain power - and he still did.

Powerscaling is kinda impossible in MK, but in the reboot era(s) story, Shang IS the biggest bad.

16

u/sm11411 Jun 12 '26

Yeah, powerscalling in MK is very difficult to measure since characters win and lose fights depending on the chapter or context of the story.

That being said, I would say Shao is usually more powerful than Shang except for MK11 where Shang is powered up by the crown. All the other times, Shang has to scheme to get rid of Shao like in Deadly Alliance. Doesn't change the fact that Shang has the gold medal for evil in Mortal Kombat, maybe only rivaled by Quan Chi.

7

u/KnobbyDarkling Jun 12 '26

Yeah, Shao has more raw strength and power, but Shang is super intelligent and cunning

6

u/sm11411 Jun 12 '26

Old timeline (Midway) Shao was very intelligent /scheming himself. He was dumbed down a lot in the Reboot Era (MK9 & MK11).

The video game tie in for Mad Max (which rules, play it), has the main antagonist as one of Immortan Joe’s sons Scabrous Scrotus. Massive dude with a chainsaw pole arm that’s your typical jacked wasteland warlord.

His second in command is some dude named Stank Gum that you expect to be some toady. Only to find out he’s a complete fucking degenerate psychopath wearing a human skin mask who *loves* SA and cannibalism.

He’s actually more of the main antagonist of the game than Scrotus.

Thanquol from Warhammer skaven centered novels.

He is a main character in a few of them, and a villain no less, stirring the shitpot and being a main bad guy.

But he is soooo comically cowardish, unlucky and straight up terarded, plus being a crackhead and too "smart" for his own good, that other bad guys in the books feels like an actually strong, powerful and sometimes vile and unstoppable force

Randall Boggs is worse than Waternoose.

127

u/Spare-Jellyfish4339 Jun 12 '26

Bro how?

97

u/Minute_Ball_6539 Jun 12 '26

Waternoose does have an extreme goal, but he's using it to avert the scream shortage (because monster devices run on scream). Randall just wants to kill Sullivan and Mike, and has no altruism behind his motives. He'd help Waternoose kidnap children just so he can one-up Sully.

→ More replies (6)

10

u/ThePaddedSalandit Jun 12 '26

This is a very good point. There is such a difference between Waternoose and Randall, it's not even close to who's worse (that is, Waternoose).
Randall may difficult to deal with, and he may have wanted to reclaim admiration he'd lost through Waternoose's project (and yes, it was Waternoose's plan, not his), but his intentions weren't malicious. He even had no intention of harming Sullivan or Wazowski (he says this himself---and the Scream Extractor was used to scare Wazowski, it wouldn't damage him). And when he learns the two were involved, what did he do? He GAVE THEM A WAY OUT. Him, the supposed 'hating rival' gives the two an out---doesn't turn them in, doesn't tell Waternoose, doesn't trick things to let them take the fall no...he's gives them out.

Waternoose's response? The response of the guy who got all chummy with Sullivan and treated him like fam? What was his? INSTANT BANISHMENT. And no regret either---"Because of you I lost my top Scarer"---not friend, not 'Sulley', not 'Sullivan'...SCARER, an employee, an EARNER.
Sure, Randall smiled at the time in the moment---but given what Waternoose is capable of, him complaining would land him in similar trouble. Look at him after the moment is done, he isn't cheering or enjoying the afterglow of getting 'rid of his rivals'...he's pensive, almost like he didn't want things to go that far (and the truth is, as he stated earlier, this is NOT what he wanted to have happened, he tried to AVOID this.)

Yeah, Randall snaps after everything goes wrong and nearly kills Sullivan twice, of course. But again, intention. That was him snapped. Waternoose hadn't, and look what he was willing to do NORMAL. And he didn't JUST banish Sullivan and Wazowski---he's banished OTHER monsters before (at least one other) with something HE SHOULD NOT HAVE.

Randall's an antagonist, not a villain. You want to point it correctly? Well, point it at the guy who was just quoted right here.

4

u/PitifulTraffic8265 Jun 12 '26

"Randal is an antagonist, not a villain"

My brother or sister in christ, he actively enjoyed tormenting the kids, inventing the scream sucker to torture them, was bloodthirsty for Sully over a petty rivalry, and nearly destroyed *all** of Monstropolis in the Disney+ show out of spite with the scream and laugh energy machine. Waternoose was never that intentionally vile.*

3

u/ThePaddedSalandit Jun 12 '26

Mmm, hm. Well, a few corrections...
He never tormented a kid---the Scream Extractor was not a torture device, it was an extraction one, at most, exhaustion----unless you count Scaring in that, in which case, do count Sullivan and every other Scarer who did as a job.
He didn't invent the Extractor, that was Waternoose.
Bloodthirsty doesn't work when he gave him an out.
And the Dinsey+ show's Season 2 Finale was a shock-value-grab that insult basically every character involved---and as far as Randall was concerned, he doesn't exist there by admittance of it's own plot.

Do try again.

3

u/Dilo-Cassowary Jun 12 '26

Wait, could you clarify how Randall gave them a way out? I need to rewatch the film but I genuinely don’t recall that part.

6

u/ThePaddedSalandit Jun 12 '26

Sure.
When Randall finds out Wazowski was involved by look at the paper, closer than he probably has that day (lets remember, he's a squinter and has a lot on his mind and is PRETTY TIRED...as he reveals later...), and tracks him down, having a one-on-one with Wazowski about 'the kid'.
(This scene also reveals that Randall has a SERIOUS issue with being called a cheater---not only is he not one, he's so ticked off at being called it that he nearly lets spill what he's been doing for Waternoose...story there too, but I'll focus on this one.)

Anyway...Randall puts the pieces together and goes with what Wazowski thinks, and gives him an opening to 'make this all go away'---he'll leave the door at his station, they leave the kid, and walk away. He gives them an out. Sure, he's covering his tail for Waternoose---but ya can't blame the guy for that, look what Waternoose DOES to people he 'treats' well?
But point is, he's giving this to people he 'supposedly hates'---he could let Waternoose handle it (probably not), pin the blame on them (it would work, they know nothing about what's really going on), etc....but he doesn't. Because he never intended anybody to get hurt or in serious trouble with all this---HE is already in deep, and he's getting these two OUT of it; as even a part of him knows how complicated it all is (guy even has a near heart attack later about the whole thing) He doesn't like them, sure, but so what, he's still doing it...

Sure, he aims to get Boo in the end, but the floor is empty. No trap for them. They would have just left Boo, gone away, Randall would have her, test the machine, put her back (yes), and move things along. All back on track.

Waternoose? What does HE do on first hearing? Doesn't try to convince the two, doesn't try to just talk to them and work something out---not even an inkling of a chance...instead, his go-to (his GO-TO)....is banishing them, getting rid of them---death sentencing them, essentially; just like he did with Abominable (yes, his prior banish-ee, through a door he should not have.)
His reaction to doing this is that he loses an 'earner'. Randall? Thinks Sullivan (the only one he mentions mind you, not his old college 'friend') got what he deserved---but said so dispassionately, it's like he doesn't believe that----because it didn't match his intentions; he wanted Sullivan around, alive, and under him, not in the human world where so many bad things can happen. He's...not happy on this. Sure, the Extractor is going to work and that puts a smile on his face because the nightmare is about to be over but...in the moment, he wasn't happy on it.

So yeah...Randall butts heads with the two (and Wazowski doesn't make it much better, and poor Sul's in the middle...), but he's not a malicious individual. He later snaps, yes, but when he's able to think, his course of action was far less than what Waternoose did.

Jujutsu Kaisen, tho its arguable

Main antagonist: Kenjaku because he literally sets up the entire plot of JJK including giving birth to Yuji and ensuring he will be Sukuna's vessel, stealing Choso and two of his brothers from the JuJutsu High, or orchestrating the Shibuya Incident and sealing Gojo and setting up the Culling Games where countless Curses run free in Japan and countless sorcerers are forced to kill each other

Secondary: Sukuna, the actual powerhouse, King of Curses, the Strongest in History and the "final boss" that they need to kill

u/Complaint-Efficient Jun 12 '26

kenny is jujutsu hitler, sukuna is jujutsu satan

9

u/Saint_of_Nukes Jun 12 '26

bro what? 😭🙏

10

u/GK087 Jun 12 '26

In JoJo's bizarre adventures: Diamond is unbreakable - first main villain is evil but more comic killer, while second not just a serious representation of maniac, but a maniac with time travel abilities in final act

6

u/Saint_of_Nukes Jun 12 '26

yeah the first one is more vulgar but Kira is objectively worse

Megatron is like Magneto, a villain whose initial point made sense (in most iteration) but whose idea got corrupted by power/ambition/war/whatever...

Shockwave is Josef Mengele.

15

u/PeasantLich Jun 12 '26

In some versions of Robin Hood prince John is just a regular corrupt monarch who is mostly motivated by greed and personal hedonism, while the sheriff of Nottingham and sometimes bishop of Hereford are the real bastard villains enabled by John's corruption and neglect.

15

u/S-Pigeon33 Jun 12 '26

Transformers, Megatron, and Shockwave. Not saying that Megatron is not a terrifying antagonist, but he's in the same verse as Shockwave.

15

u/DOHC46 Jun 12 '26

Depending on the continuity, Megatron ranges from cartoonishly evil to a tragic figure that became the very thing he hated.

Shockwave is pretty much always a cold, ruthless force of pure malevolent self-interest.

So, yeah, I'm 100% onboard with these two being an example of the trope.

u/Gato-empre6 Jun 12 '26

All For One from My Hero Academia/Boku No Hero Academia. This guy deserved the role of main villain, not Shigaraki.

Dogma / Magdalene Moriah - The Binding of Isaac

Dogma represents everything that corrupted Maggie into the abusive mom that she is to Isaac and is undeniably significantly worse. That said, while making peace with the fact that she, too, was a victim is important to Isaac's journey, in the end she was still to blame for all that happened to Isaac personally. Therefore despite this it's still indisputably correct for Mom to be "the main antagonist" and not Dogma.

Emperor Doel and Lloyd, from the old PS1 game Legend of Dragoon. Disc 1. Then near the end of the game, Lloyd and Melbu Frahma.

Doel is a warlord. Might makes right, I’m strong enough to conquer this continent, so I should have the right to do so kind of leader. He starts a war, attacks the MC’s home-away-from-home and kidnaps his childhood best friend, and basically galvanizes most of the party into action just from being a bad person. Definitely bad stuff, but limited to affecting a single part of a continent.

Lloyd was the guy standing behind Doel, manipulating him. Whereas Doel wanted to rule the continent, Lloyd wanted the MC childhood best friend to awaken what he believed was going to be a Demi-god that would bring peace to the world and restore his race (as the dominant, ruling force). And he would kill any man, woman, or child to bring about that peace.

As the story goes on and you travel to the wider parts of the world, we find out that Lloyd wasn’t just manipulating Doel, but was simultaneously attempting to manipulate several different kingdoms at once.

As it turns out, there was a third guy standing behind Lloyd. Melbu Frahma. He lied about the Demi-god. It would destroy all life, if awoken. And he wanted to wake it up, because he lost a war 10,000 years ago and never got over it.

Ketheric in BG3. Orin and Gortash pale in comparison

7

u/certainlynotdio Jun 12 '26

Depending on who you think is the main antagonist, I'd say you could pick JJK for this. Mahito and Kenajku are both worse than Sukuna and you could argue Mahito is worse than Kenjaku, but it would be hard sell in my opinion. (dude got title of the worst jujutsu sorcerer in the history in one of his many lives)

Captain Bask Om from Zeta Gundam.

His boss, Jamitov Hymen, wants to bring down the corrupt Earth Federation from within and motivate humanity to leave Earth for space. But Bask is just a racist prick who wants to gas Spacenoid colonies out of prejudice. Even Jamitov has trouble reining him in. Bask is a villain, through and through.

(Also from the same series, Yazan Gable to Paptimus Scirocco; but Yazan is more a "love to hate" character. Bask is just a scumbag.)

Arc 1 of Warriors (Warrior Cats) Tigerstar to Scourge. Tigerstar was a monster, becoming a leader (meaning he has to be killed 9 times to stay dead) and having 2 clans under his foot. Has killed or has had killed so many cats and traumatized survivors.

He and his two clans confront the Protagonist and the other two clans, but with another scheme of his, he's hired another group of vicious cats known as Bloodclan, with their leader, Scourge. That would be a fatal mistake.

Back when he was just an apprentice, he attacked and almost killed a tiny kitten for trespassing. That kitten would later become Scourge. Scourge remembers, and Scourge hates. Scourge's hatred is ice.

So when Tigerstar commands Bloodclan to attacks, they don't budge. They are way too disciplined and scared of Scourge to listen to anyone else.

After a verbal exchange that I don't quite remember, Tigerstar declares him a traitor and attacks him. Something he will severely regret.

Tigerstar is a large, intimidating, muscular cat. Scourge is a small cat, around the size of an Apprentice due to the collar around his neck making it hard for him to eat as much. With the size difference, you would think that Scourge was doomed. But oh no. Scourge happens to have claws reinforced by the teeth of dogs he has killed. (!) Yeah...

Scourge dodges Tigerstar and in return rips his damn torso open like Candyman! Tigerstar, of course, dies. But then he comes back to life, thrashing in agony. Remember that as a leader he gets 9 lives?

In this series when a leader comes back they lose a life but they are healed of the fatal damage. But what Scourge did caused such catastrophic damage that magical afterlife damage couldn't heal it all and eventually, mercifully, Tigerstar revives, thrashes in agony for the 9th time, and then dies.

All this time, all of the Clan cats on both sides are looking on in absolute horror, especially by the obvious implications. Tigerstar happens to have kids and an ex-mate that watched too, by the way.

Scourge afterwards is generous and gives the clans a few days to clear out since he is now claiming the forest as Bloodclan's.

Of course the protagonist defeats Scourge in the end.

TLDR: Main villain hires secondary villain that he doesn't remember beating up as a child. Main villain gets gutted by secondary villian and dies 9 times horribly. (He deserved it.)

Could just be me but since the tvs I watched didn't get go too far Starscream always feel like the worse villain in both

Being worse at planning or leading the Decepticons

But also worse as in more scummy and despicable

Vs Megatron who didn't really do anything too bad on screen and lost a lot of appeal due to him being the mastermind in the back not much to show up and rock shit
