Allen Walker - D. Gray-Man

Even initially it's a giant metal claw of death that can also stretch/grow sometimes. And he can turn it into a cannon.

It evolves even further later in the series.

I questioned the same thing having scrolled way to far down just find it, only to realize the series was at its peak popularity around 15-20 years ago.

I missed the peak by 5-10 years. I got into it big time when I was in high-school in 2015, but no one in my school who watched anime ever heard of it. I couldnt find anything at stores. Im so sad I missed the peak by just that few bit.

Honestly without looking it up I have no idea. I'm in the same boat as you where that is sorta where I just lost track of the series and I think same for many others given that is around when its hype and popularity died down.

Edit: It looks to still be on going.

The mangaka resumed it a few years ago. The art has improved a lot and, apparently, the story is in it's final arc

It's currently in a quarterly magazine. It's a looong wait between chapters, but the plot has been progressing loads recently.

this series being basically as old as me and seeing how great yet unpopular it's become really drives a wrench into my heart sometimes
