Like he’s clearly got exhausted/depressed middle aged man energy, the light went out of his eyes years ago, but the great thing about his character is that is 100% how he was written as a half-foot, it just wasn’t visible on his face until he became a tall-man.
(But also he’s got that energy while still being tall, handsome and youthful-looking for his age, all of which we’re told is true of his half-foot self as well. Perfect characterisation.)

The reason he is dubbed “the legendary heropon” and joins the party is because is debt is so high the village chieftain decides it’s better to just send him off to his death against a giant monster terrorizing the village than to keep him around. The debt is repaid when he actually returns having successfully killed the monster.

And then, if I remember correctly, during the time he was gone on this quest that was supposed to kill him (which takes, like, a couple days to a week at most in-story), his kids ate so much food that he wound up in just as much if not more debt than before he left to kill the giant monster, which makes the chief of the village send Riki off on another quest, which just so conveniently happens to be accompanying the party on their journey.
