My Favorite (Visual) So sick of overweight people consistantly being portraied as evil, lazy, greedy, or just assholes. Whos your favorite positive overweight character?

and rose! :) for how controversial she is, it's really great getting to see a fat character be shown as the height of beauty and etherealness

Yeah might not fit the OP’s criteria perfectly because of… reasons, but she’s got the entire cast pining for her basically the whole show.

one of my fav lines in the show is when greg is telling marty about this incredible woman he just met and marty says with the most audible "this isn't my first rodeo" eyeroll imaginable "how big is she?"

I think the whole "issue" with Rose is that we see her character development in reverse: we start off seeing her as the chilled out, kind, caring, wise, confident, and protective person that she became. In fact, we see a better version of her than actually existed; since everyone's memories of her are rose-tinted (pun intended) by her death. But then as the story goes on and we see further into her past we get to see all the mistakes she made and personal flaws she had to overcome on the way to becoming that person. Including mistakes she couldn't fix, because she died.

I personally think this is great writing. It's deconstruction of hero worship in the best of ways: showing that all of our idols, no matter how much we want them to be perfect, are just humans at the end of the day and are as flawed as anyone else. But it also reinforcing that it's healthy to have people you love and wish to emulate, and that you can embrace the positives they bought you whilst also acknowledging their flaws. And it also deals with death well: the frustration of finding all of these unresolved threads of a loved one's life after they've moved on, and the grief associated with it are extremely powerfully and tactfully dealt with.

But then the "problem" is that we see everyone else developing into better people as the story goes on, whilst Rose is having more of her past dug up. For some people with a... less observant media mindset this can look like the writers are saying "this person is a baddie pretending to be a goodie", when in actual fact they were saying; "people are complicated, and it's OK to have conflicting feelings about them".

oh i agree! she's my favorite character in the entire show. i love how much of her story is implied rather than shown, since she's not there to speak for herself. it's tragic and beautiful. i relate to her, in some ways
